Book Seakeeping Characteristics of the XR 5 A High Length Beam Ratio Manned Surface Effect Testcraft III Results of Random Wave Experiments Investigation of Linear Superposition for Ship Motions and Trim and Draft in Random Waves

Download or read book Seakeeping Characteristics of the XR 5 A High Length Beam Ratio Manned Surface Effect Testcraft III Results of Random Wave Experiments Investigation of Linear Superposition for Ship Motions and Trim and Draft in Random Waves written by Joseph J. Ricci and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motion responses derived from model experimental results in regular and irregular head waves for the XR-5 high length-beam ratio surface effect ship are presented. Frequency response functions for pitch, heave, relative bow motion, heave acceleration and bow acceleration were computed from the random wave experiments and are presented herein. Comparisons are made with responses derived from regular wave experiments. The results indicate that the rigid body motions are reasonably linear for the Froude numbers and sea conditions investigated. Nonlinear effects that increase with the severity of the sea state are evident in the accelerations. In addition, the motion of the stern seal with respect to the relative motion at the stern is presented. These responses are generally linear although some nonlinear effects appear with increasing Froude number. Probability distributions for the double amplitude of wave height, heave and pitch are presented. Comparisons are made with Rayleigh probability distributions based on the variances of the sample data and on the minimum Chi Square estimators computed from the distributions. (Author).

Book Ship Design

Download or read book Ship Design written by Apostolos Papanikolaou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with ship design and in particular with methodologies of the preliminary design of ships. The book is complemented by a basic bibliography and five appendices with useful updated charts for the selection of the main dimensions and other basic characteristics of different types of ships (Appendix A), the determination of hull form from the data of systematic hull form series (Appendix B), the detailed description of the relational method for the preliminary estimation of ship weights (Appendix C), a brief review of the historical evolution of shipbuilding science and technology from the prehistoric era to date (Appendix D) and finally a historical review of regulatory developments of ship's damage stability to date (Appendix E). The book can be used as textbook for ship design courses or as additional reading for university or college students of naval architecture courses and related disciplines; it may also serve as a reference book for naval architects, practicing engineers of related disciplines and ship officers, who like to enter the ship design field systematically or to use practical methodologies for the estimation of ship's main dimensions and of other ship main properties and elements of ship design.

Book Seakeeping Characteristics of the Xr 5 a High Length beam Ratio Manned Surface Effect Testcraft

Download or read book Seakeeping Characteristics of the Xr 5 a High Length beam Ratio Manned Surface Effect Testcraft written by Allen H. Magnuson and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motion response data for regular waves in head seas is presented for a model of a high length/beam ratio surface effect ship (SES). Data is presented in normalized form for pitch, heave, relative bow velocity, relative bow motion, stern seal motion, bow acceleration and heave acceleration. The pitch motion data exhibits a resonant or underdamped behavior governed by a constant natural frequency throughout the speed range investigated. The wave pumping effect was observed in the supercritical frequency range, and was particularly evident in the normalized acceleration data. The relative bow motion exhibits a pronounced peak at a frequency slightly above the pitching natural frequency.

Book Hydrodynamics of High Speed Marine Vehicles

Download or read book Hydrodynamics of High Speed Marine Vehicles written by Odd M. Faltinsen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-09 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamics of High-Speed Marine Vehicles, first published in 2006, discusses the three main categories of high-speed marine vehicles - vessels supported by submerged hulls, air cushions or foils. The wave environment, resistance, propulsion, seakeeping, sea loads and manoeuvring are extensively covered based on rational and simplified methods. Links to automatic control and structural mechanics are emphasized. A detailed description of waterjet propulsion is given and the effect of water depth on wash, resistance, sinkage and trim is discussed. Chapter topics include resistance and wash; slamming; air cushion-supported vessels, including a detailed discussion of wave-excited resonant oscillations in air cushion; and hydrofoil vessels. The book contains numerous illustrations, examples and exercises.

Book Seakeeping Characteristics of the XR 5 a High Length Beam Ratio Manned Surface Effect Testcraft II Results of Linearity Investigation Effects of Changes from Reference Operating Condition and Trim and Draft in Regular Waves

Download or read book Seakeeping Characteristics of the XR 5 a High Length Beam Ratio Manned Surface Effect Testcraft II Results of Linearity Investigation Effects of Changes from Reference Operating Condition and Trim and Draft in Regular Waves written by Allen H. Magnuson and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motion responses in regular head waves for the XR-5 high length-beam ratio surface effect ship are presented. Frequency response functions based on an equivalent amplitude derived from the total energy are presented for pitch, heave, relative bow motion, heave acceleration and bow acceleration. These are compared with responses computed from the first harmonic component of each signal. The results show that the pitch, heave, relative bow motion and bow acceleration exhibit linear behavior for the Froude numbers investigated. Some nonlinear behavior is evident in the heave acceleration at frequencies near the natural frequency in pitch. The effect of varying lift fans and duct valve settings on the response is determined. The pitch magnification is shown to increase when the duct valves are opened beyond the reference settings. Trim angles and drafts for the reference operating condition are presented as a function of encounter frequency for three speeds. The results indicate a moderate variation in trim and draft with frequency.

Book Some Performance Characteristics of the Bell 100 Ton Surface Effect Ship

Download or read book Some Performance Characteristics of the Bell 100 Ton Surface Effect Ship written by Lonnie Francis Cagle and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program for simulating the performance of the 100-B surface effect ship is used to study the longitudinal motions of the ship under various wave conditions. An investigation into the effect that waves have on bow seal, stern seal, and plenum pressures is conducted. The relationship between the different pressures and their associated requirements of input air from the fans is studied. It is concluded that the computer program is limited to a certain range of speeds. The concept of the ship capturing air to reduce drag and increase its speed is questionable due to the rapid replenishment of air required to keep the ship riding on its bubble of air. (Modified author abstract).
