Book excerpt: About half of the seafood imported into the U.S. comes from farmed fish (aquaculture). Fish grown in confined aquacultured areas can have bacterial infections, which may require farmers to use drugs like antibiotics. The residues of some drugs can cause cancer and antibiotic resistance. The Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is charged with ensuring the safety of seafood against residues from unapproved drugs, and the Department of Commerce's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) provides inspection services on request. In 2009, these agencies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance seafood oversight and leverage inspection resources. GAO was asked to assess the extent to which (1) FDA's program is able to ensure the safety of seafood imports against residues from unapproved drugs and (2) FDA and NMFS have implemented the 2009 MOU. GAO reviewed data and documents from each agency and interviewed agency officials and other key stakeholders.

Download or read book Seafood Safety and Adulterated Products written by Marcia O. Edwards and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Additionally, the deliberate substitution or addition of harmful ingredients in food and drugs, specifically melamine in pet food and oversulfated chondroitin sulphate in the blood thinner heparin, have caused public health crises in recent years. This book examines the FDA's efforts to improve oversight and protection of imported seafood; and focuses on enhancing efforts to detect and prevent economic adulteration of food and medical products that could affect the public health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FDA is responsible for ensuring the safety of 80% of the U.S. food supply, incl. both domestic and imported food. Changing demographics and consumption patterns along with an increase in imports have presented challenges to FDA. Recent outbreaks, such as ¿E. coli¿ from spinach and ¿Salmonella¿ from tomatoes, have undermined consumer confidence in the safety of the food supply. In Nov. 07, FDA released its ¿Food Protection Plan¿ and noted that more specific info. about the strategies and resources needed to implement the plan would follow. This testimony focuses on: (1) FDA¿s progress in implementing the Plan; (2) FDA¿s proposal to focus inspections based on risk; and (3) FDA¿s implementation of previously issued recommendations. Book excerpt: In 2007, Americans consumed 5 billion pounds of seafood. Most seafood buyers -- importers, distributors, supermarkets, restaurants, and individual consumers -- assume that the seafood they buy is what the seller claims it is. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes seafood products are mislabeled for financial gain -- an activity called seafood fraud. Three federal agencies play key roles in detecting and preventing seafood fraud: Customs and Border Protection, the Nat. Marine Fisheries Service, and the FDA. This report determines: (1) the actions key fed. agencies take to help detect and prevent seafood fraud; and (2) the extent to which these key fed. agencies collaborate with each other to help detect and prevent seafood fraud.
