Book Patterns of Distribution Abundance and Change Over Time in the Marine Bird Community of Prince William Sound Alaska 1989 2012

Download or read book Patterns of Distribution Abundance and Change Over Time in the Marine Bird Community of Prince William Sound Alaska 1989 2012 written by Daniel Arel Cushing and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, the marine ecosystems of Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska have experienced the concurrent effects of a major anthropogenic disturbance, the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill (EVOS), and a dynamic atmospheric-oceanic environment. Studies of top marine consumers can provide insights into processes of ecosystem change. Using data collected during boat-based marine bird surveys in PWS over the period 1989-2012, I used complimentary taxon- and community-centric approaches to investigate patterns of distribution and abundance of marine birds across space and time. In doing so, I sought to provide insight into processes that may have affected both the birds themselves and the ecosystems of which they are a part. I found that the marine bird community as a whole was spatially structured along a primary onshore-offshore environmental gradient, and secondarily structured along an estuarine-marine environmental gradient. I found two patterns of community variability across time. The first temporal community-level pattern was likely related to sustained rates of change in the abundance of some genera, likely caused by demographic processes. This pattern was correlated with climate variability at time-scales of several years to a decade. The second temporal community-level pattern was characterized by fluctuations that correlated with climate variability at an annual time-scale, likely caused by movements of birds between PWS and the adjacent Gulf of Alaska. I also evaluated changes in the abundance of 18 genera of marine birds, and found that seven had declined in abundance and three had increased over the study period; all genera that declined were piscivorous or planktivorous. Furthermore, the rates of population change of genera were related to their position in the onshore-offshore gradient, with the highest rates of decline occurring in offshore-associated genera. I also investigated spatial habitat associations and temporal changes in abundance of a focal taxon, the seabird genus Brachyramphus. Two species within this piscivorous, pursuit-diving genus occur in PWS, the marbled murrelet (B. marmoratus) and the Kittlitz's murrelet (B. brevirostris). Both are species of conservation concern, and both experienced acute mortality in PWS caused by the EVOS. Using a statistical model that accounted for variables affecting observed abundance across space and time, I found that abundance decreased by more than two-thirds over the study period. I found no evidence that rates of change differed along environmental or geographic gradients. There was also no evidence that changes in seasonal patterns of abundance occurred. These results are indicative of a widespread decline in the abundance of Brachyramphus murrelets within PWS. Taken as a whole, the results of my thesis are consistent with the hypothesis that climate change has differentially affected nearshore and offshore components of PWS food webs. This in turn has likely contributed to the failure of some taxa, including Brachyramphus murrelets, to recover from population injury caused by the EVOS.

Book Volume 1 Seabird Biodiversity and Human Activities

Download or read book Volume 1 Seabird Biodiversity and Human Activities written by Jaime A. Ramos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seabirds are global travellers connecting oceans and seas all over the world, and facing multiple threats at local and global scales. Seabirds are long-lived top predators, reflecting changes at lower trophic levels, and are good models to assess ecological changes produced by human societies. Thus, world-wide collaborations are needed to understand seabird ecology and to develop effective conservation measures benefitting both humans and seabird populations. This book provides a modern overview on seabird biodiversity studies: it begins by covering the most up-to-date techniques to study seabirds, and then focus on pragmatic issues related with interactions between seabirds and humans, the use of seabirds as ecological indicators and conservation of seabirds. It gives an updated insight on all these topics and highlights gaps that need further development for a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between seabirds and human actions. This book covers the response of the seabird research community to a biodiversity crisis aiming to contribute towards environmental sustainability. It should provide inspiration to a wide range of professionals and students, including the much needed world-wide collaboration between research groups and practitioners. In this way seabird research and conservation provide an inspiration for the solution of global issues such as climate change.

Book Wildlife and Wind Farms Conflicts and Solutions

Download or read book Wildlife and Wind Farms Conflicts and Solutions written by Martin Perrow and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind farms are an essential component of global renewable energy policy and the action to limit the effects of climate change. There is, however, considerable concern over the impacts of wind farms on wildlife, leading to a wide range of research and monitoring studies, a growing body of literature and several international conferences on the topic. This unique multi-volume work provides a comprehensive overview of the interactions between wind farms and wildlife. Volume 4 provides a state-of-the-science guide to monitoring and mitigation to minimise or even eliminate impacts on wildlife from offshore wind farms. The survey and monitoring section includes detailed chapters on fish and invertebrate communities, marine mammals and seabirds, and a chapter dedicated to the use of tracking technology applied to birds. The section continues with a chapter on collision risk and population modelling that underpins much current impact assessment, and a chapter detailing how collision risk for birds and bats may be monitored at sea. The mitigation section comprises chapters outlining mitigation options and strategies for birds and bats, and how to mitigate the effects of noise, especially during construction, on marine mammals and fish. A chapter on perspectives on marine spatial planning as applied to wind farms concludes the volume. The authors have been carefully selected from across the globe from the large number of academics, consultants and practitioners now engaged in wind farm studies, for their influential contribution to the science. Edited by Martin Perrow and with contributions by over 40 leading researchers including: Aonghais Cook, Thomas Dahlgren, Johann Köppel, Meike Scheidat, Henrik Skov, Chris Thaxter & Frank Thomsen. The authors represent a wide range of organisations and institutions including the Universities of Gothenberg, Ghent, Highlands & Islands and Wageningen, Chalmers University of Technology and Technical University of Berlin, British Trust for Ornithology, The Carbon Trust, Institute of Avian Research Vogelwarte Helgoland, Institute for Applied Ecosystem Research (IfAÖ), Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU); as well as several leading consultancies. Book Seabirds at Sea in High Risk Inshore Environments

Download or read book Seabirds at Sea in High Risk Inshore Environments written by Daphne A. Roycroft and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inshore environment contains a variety of potential risks to seabirds, most notably from surface pollution and the rapidly expanding mariculture industry. The year-round distribution and habitat-use of seabirds at sea in Ireland{u2019}s inshore environment is poorly studied however. The main aims of this study were to establish the spatio-temporal distribution and habitat-use of seabirds in two contrasting, high-risk environments (i.e. Bantry Bay and the Shannon Estuary) and to assess the risks posed to these communities from surface pollutants and mussel suspension culture. Using a combination of shore and boat-based survey techniques, a number of {u2018}hot-spots{u2019} of high seabird density were identified, including the mouth of Bantry Bay and a narrow region of the inner Shannon Estuary. The relative abundance of many species groups was an order of magnitude greater in Bantry Bay than in the Shannon Estuary, possibly reflecting the presence of rich feeding grounds associated with the Irish Shelf Front at the mouth of Bantry Bay. Seasonal variations in seabird abundance differed between sites, however highest concentrations of many species occurred in autumn. The tidal cycle did not significantly influence the relative abundance of any of the species studied. Vulnerable concentrations of seabirds in areas of high risk from oil-pollution were identified. Investigations of seabird habitat-use using generalized linear and generalized additive modelling revealed that seaward distance (the distance from the most inshore point of the study site) was a significant positive determinant of total seabird distribution in both sites. Many seabird species were also positively related to distance from the nearest coast in Bantry Bay and to seabed slope in the Shannon Estuary. This indicates that the importance of individual habitat variables varies between sites due to confounding factors such as current flow. A comparison of seabird abundance and behaviour between areas of mussel suspension culture and control sites in Bantry Bay revealed that this method of aquaculture had a positive or neutral impact upon the seabird community occurring here. Conservation applications of these finding are discussed.
