Book America s Fighting Admirals

Download or read book America s Fighting Admirals written by William Tuohy and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American naval actions of World War II comprise the most widespread, complex, and dramatic battles in the history of sea warfare. The fighting took place over vast distances in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as well as in the constricted spaces of the Mediterranean and Solomon seas. Each of the major actions had an admiral, the commander in charge, who led the battle. In combat, the abilities and determination of these commanders at sea were put to the most severe test. Americas Fighting Admirals describes the course of U.S. sea action in World War II. It examines the skills, strengths, weaknesses and personalities of the American admirals who fought the battles at sea. It examines the effect that stress, tension, and responsibility have on commanders making vital decisions in the red-hot crucible of battle. And it reveals the changing nature of the responsibilities of flag officers as the war progressed and became enormously complex.

Book Fighting the Great War at Sea

Download or read book Fighting the Great War at Sea written by Norman Friedman and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the overriding image of the First World War is of the bloody stalemate on the Western Front, the overall shape of the war arose out of its maritime character. It was essentially a struggle about access to worldwide resources, most clearly seen in Germany’s desperate attempts to counter the American industrial threat, which ultimately drew the United States into the war. This radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapons technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. Melding strategic, technical, and tactical aspects, Friedman approaches the First World War from a fresh perspective and demonstrates how its perceived lessons dominated the way navies prepared for the Second World War.

Book More Sea Fights of the Great War Including the Battle of Jutland Classic Reprint

Download or read book More Sea Fights of the Great War Including the Battle of Jutland Classic Reprint written by W. L. Wyllie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from More Sea Fights, of the Great War, Including the Battle of Jutland This book, like its forerunner, "Sea Fights of the Great War," is again the work of many hands. Naval friends have contributed vital details, giving life and colour to what might otherwise have proved a dull recital of facts. Of the three collaborators whose names appear upon the title-page, one of them, Mr. W. D. Kirkpatrick, served in varying capacities all through the war. His work was highly technical, and he has been able to give many accounts of the inner working of the great fighting ships, with glimpses of the daily life of our gallant sailors. The second, Mr. W. L. Wyllie, R.A., cruised in all types of craft of the Royal Navy, from the largest and newest of the super-Dreadnoughts and battle-cruisers to submarines, "Q" ships and motor launches. He has been chiefly concerned with the portrayal of the war at sea. His pictures have been in almost every case painted on the spot from the actual ships, the guns being specially trained and elevated to the correct position. The third, Mr. Charles Owen, has devoted all his attention to sorting out the fragmentary scraps of information, putting them into proper order, and giving a smoothness to the narrative. We offer our combined efforts to the thoughtful among our fellow-countrymen, in the hope that they may help the men and women of Great Britain to understand how much they owe to the Silent Service, which carried on through four long years of waiting and watching, interspersed with desperate fighting, and finally brought the great German Empire to hopeless ruin. Download or read book Sea Fights of the Great War written by W. L. Wyllie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea Fights of the Great War: Naval Incidents During the First Nine Months This book, the work of many hands, may perhaps help some of our countrymen to understand how much they owe to the silent service, which, unseen and almost forgotten, is slowly strangling the life out of our enemies. It is not pretended that this is a complete history of the war at sea. In the fever of a gigantic struggle our vision is too close, our judgment perhaps too prejudiced for true history, but we may be later a help to others. Book excerpt: Winner of the John Lyman Book Award for Naval and Maritime Science and Technology. “A compelling and convincing historical analysis of World War I.” —Navy News While the overriding image of the First World War is of the bloody stalemate on the western front, the overall shape of the war arose out of its maritime character. It was essentially a struggle about access to worldwide resources, most clearly seen in Germany’s desperate attempts to counter the American industrial threat, which ultimately drew the United States into the war. Book Fighting the Great War at Sea

Download or read book Fighting the Great War at Sea written by Norman Friedman and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overriding image of the First World War is the bloody stalemate of the Western Front, but although much of the action did occur on land, the overall shape of the war _ even the inevitability of British participation _ arose out of its maritime character. It was essentially a struggle about access to worldwide resources, most clearly seen in the desperate German attempts to deal with the American industrial threat, which ultimately levered the United States into the war, and thus a consequence of British sea control.rn This radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing it describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapon technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. Combat produced many surprises: some, like the impact of the mine and torpedo, are familiar, but this book also brings to light many previously unexplored subjects, like creative new tactical practices and improved command and control.rn The contrast between expectation and reality had enormous consequences not only for the course of the war but also for the way navies developed afterwards. This book melds strategic, technical, and tactical aspects to reveal the First World War from a fresh perspective, but also demonstrates how its perceived lessons dominated the way navies prepared for the Second.
