Book Spain of the Spanish Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spain of the Spanish Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Villiers-Wardell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain of the Spanish I have said, somewhere in the chapter on Literature, that a true realist must set aside his personal thoughts and feelings and content himself with stating facts. But then one cannot state facts unless one knows them, and one cannot know a Country and a People unless one is in sympathy with them. And the parent of sympathy is understanding, just as the parent Of understanding is trust. And so we find ourselves once again appreciating that most splendid quality of the Spaniard to which I have above alluded! It is very possible that here and there in these pages English readers may find ideas and sentiments with which they are not in accord, but always the title Of the book must be remembered. Spain of the English is not at all the same thing as Spain of the Spanish! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in Spain and Portugal At the beginning of the eighth century the Arabs, whose domination extended along the Mediterranean coast as far as the Pillars of Hercules, crossed the Straits of Gades, annihilated the Visigoth monarchy at Guadalete (a.d. 7l I), and invaded the Iberian peninsula. The sons of Gatho lic, Apostolic and Roman Spain came to accept to a great extent the Musulman tenets regarding marriage, and the characteristic compromise of the Koran touching the doctrines of divine prescience and free-will. Book A Record of Spanish Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Record of Spanish Painting Classic Reprint written by C. Gasquoine Hartley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Record of Spanish Painting IN writing the history of Spanish painting, I have striven to recount the growth of the country's art from the stand point of historical evolution. It seemed to me that such a work was needed. The pictures of Spain are, in a very special degree, the outgrowth of the national life, and the distinctive character of the country's record has given them a specific interest. It is not over-stating the truth to say that Spain is the land where the seed was sown for the artistic harvest we are reaping to-day. It is these thoughts that have guided me while writing this record. I have not tried to give a chronological account of every Spanish painter. This work has already been achieved by Sir William stirling-maxwell in the Annals of the Artists of Spain. I have never hesitated to omit those painters whose work to me seemed insignificant and without meaning in the development of the art-life of the country. Book A Manual of Spanish Art and Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Spanish Art and Literature Classic Reprint written by A. B. Berard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Spanish Art and Literature This little manual grew out of a want felt by the writer in her experience as a teacher, - viz., that of light and interesting sketches of the famous men of art and letters whose genius has filled the civilized world with their immortal renown. The desire to supply in some measure this want has induced the preparation of this little volume; and Spain has been selected as the field for a first experiment, because no literature is more distinguished than is the elder Spanish for richness of invention, for beauty of style, for purity of moral tone, and for a lofty spirit of national pride and patriotic devotion. With its projected companions, the Manuals of Italy and Germany, it is intended to awaken in the young reader a taste for literature and art, the gratification of which will be a source of future enjoyment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Spanish Artists Until Goya And so, whether it be in Toledo or in Seville or in Estremadura or in Valencia, Spanish art, already a hundred years later in its development than the art of Italy, is just a religious hampered. By all the dogmatism of the Spanish ecclesiastic, oblivious not of life but of laughter, of the gaiety, for instance, which you may find implicit almost in Fra Angelico's work, really just a drudge of the Church that, so she said, set no store by things which rust and moth doth corrupt. Book The Soul of Spain Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of Spain Many years ago, as a child of six, I was taken by my father from Callao to spend the day in Lima, the capital of Peru. It was the first great foreign city I had seen, and the unfamiliar features of its streets, such as elsewhere have since become so familiar to me - the huge gateways, the pleasant courtyards one looked into beyond - made an ineffaceable impression on my mind. It has since seemed to me a fact not without significance that this first glimpse of the non-Anglo-Saxon world should have been of a foreign city founded on those Spanish traditions which have since been so attractive to me, so potent to thrill or to charm. My acquaintance with Spain itself has been confined to the past twenty years or less. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cathedral of Burgos

Download or read book The Cathedral of Burgos written by V. Lampérez Y. Romea and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral of Burgos: Art in Spain; Under the Patronage of the Hispanic Society of America The chief monument of the capital of Castile is one of the most remarkable creations of that magnificent Gothic art, which, after so many vicissitudes and digressions, resulted in the thirteenth century in a style which is the synthesis and epitome of Christian mysticism and at the same time one of the most sublime conceptions of the human genius. The Cathedral of Burgos is even more than this, for the artists of every age have expended their enthusiasm and their inspiration upon it, and made it a museum of all the arts. Alfonso VI, possessed several palaces at Burgos. Upon remodelling the dioceses of Castile, he made over these in order to erect a cathedral, this being done between 1075 and 1096. In this old romanesque church St. Ferdinand was married to Beatrice of Swabia by Bishop Maurice. The prelate travelled from Burgos to fetch the German princess and escort her to Spain. The impressions gained during his travels no doubt urged him to construct a new cathedral, vast and splendid. On June 20th, 1221, the King and the Bishop laid the first stone of the temple, which was used for public worship in 1230 (this does not prove that the whole edifice was completed but only the apse), and probably the thirteenth century was half gone when the keystones of the nave were placed in position. The definite completion of the work was delayed till the sixteenth century. The identity of the architect is still a matter of doubt. The first architect mentioned in the archives is Master Henry who died in 1277, a man sufficiently famous since he also superintended the erection of the cathedral of Leon. But on comparing dates we find it difficult though not impossible to believe that he could have begun that of Burgos. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial Arts in Spain The Greek and Latin authors who have described the Spanish Peninsula, state that the quantity of gold and silver ore found there was very great, and that hence the district became an important centre of commercial activity of Phoenicians, Cartha ginians, Greeks, ' and Romans. Some authors have gone so far as to assert that the Phoenicians made the anchors of their ships of gold and silver, and that the Carthaginians were astonished to find in Andalusia, that the mangers and vases for holding wine and oil were made of the same materials. These references have been constantly mentioned in ancient Spanish authors. Ambrosio de Morales, in his Antiguedades de espafia, Alcala I 577, enters into every detail on this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish School: Loan Collection The Spanish masterpieces impress by an exposure of the subject so thorough, so frank, with so great a dis dain for amelioration, that the efiect seems often cruel, and at the same time there is so subtle a sense of values, so great a skill in portrayal, that the graces of the art seem to be unnecessary and out of place. Grim and sardonic, vigorous and splendid, with truth, arrogant in manner and in color, and with great dignity, the art of Spain is distinctive. These works were executed in a pleas ing and natural style; and it is to be hoped that some of them survive in the National Museum. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals of Spain N the last dozen years many English books on Spain have appeared. They have dealt with their subject from the point of view of the artist or the his torian, the archaeologist, the politician, or the mere sight-seer. The student of architecture, or the travel er, desiring a more intimate or serious knowledge of the great cathedrals, has had nothing to consult since Street published his remarkable book some forty years ago. There have been artistic impressions, as well as guide-book recitations, by the score. Some have been excellent, though few have surpassed the older ones of Dumas, pere, and Gautier, or Baedeker's later guide-book. A year ago appeared the second and last volume of Sefior Lamperez y Romea's His toria de la Arquitectura Cristiana Espanola en la Edad Media, a work so comprehensive and scholarly that it practically stands alone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Masters: An Outline of the History of Painting in Spain MY design in these chapters is but to give a rapid sketch of the great Spanish painters, and to express some of my love for the treasures of Spanish art; a love not begun, but deepened by the study of the galleries of Madrid. Spain is still a wonderland to the art student; a long era of religious oppression robbed it indeed of much wealth, yet it remains a land of romance and art. The enthusi astic studies of stirling-maxwell, Head, and Ford, have opened rich treasures to the eager student; but except their volumes (and they are all out of print), there is scarcely any thing on the subject in our English tongue. The student of Spanish art is forced to seek elsewhere his knowledge, and for a thorough study he must go back to Cean Bermudez's invaluable Dictionary of Spanish Painters, from which I have gleaned much information, and to the amusing pages of Palomino and Fonz. Yet these works must necessarily be within the reach of but few; and this fact will perhaps excuse my venturing to sketch the great masters of Spanish painting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paintings of the Louvre, Italian and Spanish The visitor who passes from the lower to the upper galleries of the Louvre might, with reason, be tempted to ask himself where the art of the intervening thousand years was to be found, and, on realizing that his search would be in vain, he might speculate as to the cause or causes which had conspired to make this so. How and why, he might ask himself, did that perfect art of Greece and its humble Roman imitation find no followers? How and why did they so vanish that art had to be born again and reappear in the form of almost childish attempts at expression a thousand years later?
