Book Scud Ballistic Missile and Launch Systems 1955 2005

Download or read book Scud Ballistic Missile and Launch Systems 1955 2005 written by Steven J. Zaloga and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scud missile was developed as the centerpiece of Soviet plans to fight nuclear war in the heart of Europe. However, it was never used in its intended role and has instead become a symbol of the changing nature of warfare in the aftermath of the Cold War. Saddam Hussein's Iraqi armed forces were almost helpless in the face of the Coalition forces in the 1991 Gulf War; the only weapon that Iraq could use to injure the Coalition forces was its arsenal of Scud missiles. This book explores the development and variants of the missile and its launch systems, its proliferation outside of the West, and its role in conflicts around the world.

Book OKSNAR Fully Assembled State Soviet nuclear weapons in Hungary 1961 1991

Download or read book OKSNAR Fully Assembled State Soviet nuclear weapons in Hungary 1961 1991 written by László Becz and published by Becz László. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of using nuclear weapons in an armed conflict during the Cold War stemmed from the Soviet Union's military doctrine. Although the strategic plans of the Soviets have not been made public, we can certainly say that it was an offensive doctrine. To serve this doctrine, nuclear weapons found their way into Hungary in 1961 when the Southern Croup of the Soviet Armed Forced stationed in Hungary acquired aircraft that was capable of carrying such weapons. It was at that time that the first permanent and well-secured storage site for nuclear bombs was built, then several followed through the next decades. The Southern front of the Soviet and Hungarian combined nuclear forces and warhead inventories were more than adequate for a successful and massive tactical nuclear strikes. The authors spent nearly 10 years to collect and analyze information, documents, and photographic evidence about nuclear weapons in Hungary. Their book is focused not only on nuclear weapons but their delivery systems, storages and military units which were connected to nuclear weapons in Hungary. Also, focusing on the political decisions, Warsaw Pacts plans and how many nuclear warheads could be stationed in Hungary between 1961-1991. The book contains 650 photos, 3D renders and drawings including many unpublished photographs.

Book Russian civil military relations and the origins of the second Chechen war

Download or read book Russian civil military relations and the origins of the second Chechen war written by Szászdi, Lajos F. and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008-08-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has relevance for those interested in understanding Russia's course in international relations under the leadership of Vladimir Putin. This book will inform the reader and is especially relevant in light of the events of 2008 in the Caucasus and the war in Georgia, in particular. The author explains the ideology of Neo-Eurasianism, which in turn inspires the policy-thinking of the Kremlin. Also studied is Putin's origins in the KGB, from the previous posts of Secretary of the Security Council and Director of the FSB, and his rise to power in the crucial year of 1999, when he became Russian Prime Minister. The author highlights the continuing trend of appointing high-ranking officers of the Russian intelligence community to senior positions in the government, studying this in the context of Russian civil-military-intelligence relations. The author reached the conclusion, back in 2003, that the members of Russian intelligence hold the reins of power above the civilian and military elements of the Russian government. The author returns to the Kosovo Crisis of 1999, discussing also the motives that led the Kremlin and Putin to invaded Chechnya for a second time in a decade. Parallels can be drawn to the 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia and the roots of the Neo-Eurasianist ideology that is behind the two invasions are examined. This book will help the reader understand Russia's current and future distribution of power in the Caucasus, the Balkans and the world at large, Moscow's search for a multipolar world, and its opposition to U.S. hegemony.

Download or read book DEFCON 2 written by Norman Polmar and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The closest we've ever come to the end of the world "DEFCON-2 is the best single volume on the Cuban Missile Crisis published and is an important contribution to the history of the Cold War. Beyond the military and political facts of the crisis, Polmar and Gresham sketch the personalities that created and coped with the crisis. They also show us how close we came to the edge without becoming sensationalistic."—Larry Bond, bestselling author of Dangerous Ground Spy-satellite and aerial-reconnaissance photos reveal that one of the United States's bitterest enemies may be acquiring weapons of mass destruction and the means to use them against the American homeland. Administration officials refuse to accept intelligence professionals' interpretation of these images and order an end to spy missions over the offending nation. More than a month later, after vicious infighting, the president orders the spy missions to resume. The new photos reveal an array of ballistic missiles, capable of carrying nuclear warheads and striking deep within U.S. territory. It appears that the missiles will be fully operational within one week. This is not a plot setup for a suspense novel; it is the true story of the most terrifying moment in the 45-year Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union: the Cuban Missile Crisis. DEFCON-2 tells this tale as it has never been told before—from both sides, with the help of hundreds of recently declassified U.S. and Soviet documents, as well as interviews with numerous former spies, military figures, and government officials who speak out here for the first time.

It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Book NATO and Warsaw Pact Armoured Fighting Vehicles of the Cold War

Download or read book NATO and Warsaw Pact Armoured Fighting Vehicles of the Cold War written by Michael Green and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While tanks were the most recognized armored vehicles during the Cold War, NATO and Warsaw Pact (WP) armies fielded a wide array of armored fighting vehicles (AFVs). These included armored cars, armored personnel carriers (APCs), anti-aircraft vehicles and self propelled artillery. Over the Cold War years nations both progressively developed series of AFVs and introduced entirely new ranges. APCs, vital to all frontline units, evolved from machine gun-armed battlefield taxis such as the US M113 and Soviet BTR-60 series into sophisticated infantry fighting vehicles. The Soviet BMP-1, US Bradley M2/M3, West German Marder and British Warrior and CVR series were classic examples of the latter, with numerous variants. The Soviet BRDM-2 series was the most numerous armored car. The British Army fielded the Saladin, Ferret and Fox and the German Army introduced the eight-wheeled Luchs and tracked SPZ11-2 Kurz. Early anti-aircraft vehicles, such as the American M42 with two 40mm Bofors, were superseded by the formidable Soviet ZSU-23-4 Shilka and the West German Geopard with radar-guided guns. This authoritative and superbly illustrated book covers the full range of AFVs in service with NATO and WP armies over the four decades of the Cold War. It will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of the expert and layman alike.
