Book Scottish Heroes of the Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scottish Heroes of the Faith Classic Reprint written by Geo; W. T. M'gown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Heroes of the Faith It is quite a common remark that there are already too many religious biographies. This may be true; but in writing these lectures for his Bible Class the Author found that several volumes had to be mastered in connection with the study of each life, before material suitable and sufficient for his purpose could be procured. The contacts and collisions of virtue with its opposite are as real and momentous to-day as in times past; and if only we can catch somewhat of the spirit of those great souls of bygone generations, then the study of their lives will make us of the present wiser, better, and nobler. In the treatment of these biographies completeness has not been aimed at, multiplicity of detail has been rigidly guarded against, and controversial points have been studiously avoided. Book Queen Margaret of Scotland

Download or read book Queen Margaret of Scotland written by Eileen Dunlop and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no denying Queen Margaret's imaginative hold on generations of Scots. Born c.1046, she died in 1094 and was canonised in 1250. She stands on a line between the late Celtic/Norse and early medieval periods; although she was contemporaneous with the Vikings, by her time the Roman church was firmly established in all but the outer reaches of Europe, among which was Scotland. Margaret, a princess of impeccable lineage who was reared at the courts of Andrew II of Hungary and Edward the Confessor, became the representative of both the Roman communion and French/English culture when she married Malcolm III, King of Scots, around 1070. Eileen Dunlop re-examines the well-documented accounts of Queen Margaret and from a modern viewpoint looks at the contradictions in her life, her marriage, her death and the differing reactions she has aroused.

Book The Scottish Chiefs Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Scottish Chiefs Vol 2 of 2 written by Jane Porter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Chiefs, Vol. 2 of 2: A Romance Time rolled back; he was no longer the Regent of Scotland, but the fond lover of Marion Braidfoot. His heart beat as it was wont to do in turning his horse down the defile which led direct to Lammington; but the scene was completely changed: the groves in which he had so often wandered with her, were gone: they had been cut down for the very purpose of burning the house they had once adorned; of destroying that place which had once been the abode of beauty and innocence and of all the tender charities. One shattered tower (*) alone remained of the castle of Lammington. The scathing of fire embrownied its sides, and the uprooted garden marked where the ravager had been. While his army marched before him along the heights of Crawford, Wallace slowly moved on, and mused on the scene. In turning the angle of a broken-down wall, his horse started, and the next moment he perceived, as if the earth opened, and an aged figure with a beard as white as snow, and wrapped in a dark plaid, appeared emerging from the ground. At sight of the apparition, Murray, who accompanied his friend, and had hitherto sympathized in silence, suddenly exclaimed, "I conjure you, honest Scot, whether you be ghost or man, to give me a subject for conversation! and tell me to whom this ruined tower belonged!" The tongue of his own country, and above all, the sight of two varriors in the Scottish garb, encouraged the old man, and stepping out on the ground, he drew near to Murray. "Ruined, indeed, sir," replied he, "and its story is simple and sad. When the Southrons who hold the fortresses in Annandale, heard of the brave acts of Sir William Wallace, they sent an army of men to destroy this castle and domains, which were his in right of his wife, the Lady Marion of Lammington, whom, sweet creature! I hear they most foully murdered in Lanark." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
