Written by leading academics for the Distance Learning course run by the two universities, the series is aimed also at a wide readership anyone with a serious interest in Scottish history and presents the fruits of the latest research in a readable style. The volumes can be read singly, or as a series. Now come the first two volumes of a further five-volume series, Scotland: The Making and Unmaking of the Nation, c.1100-1707, due for completion on the 300th anniversary of the parliamentary union of Scotland with England in 2007. The new series aims to show the importance of Scotland's relationships to Europe and its part in a broader European story, as well as, like the first series, to dispel long-established myths and preconceptions which continue to exert a firm grip on public opinion. Especially in a post-devolution era, Scottish history and Scotland deserve better than this. A word about the title of the new series, Scotland: The Making and Unmaking of the Nation, c.1100-1707. It is certainly designed to provoke but need not be taken to indicate a nationalist view of 1707 as a moment of eclipse. Scotland's history, like all histories, resists simple generalisations. Were it otherwise, its study would not be so rewarding.

Early modern Scotland was predominantly rural. Agriculture was the main occupation of most people at the time, so what happened in the countryside was crucial: economically, socially and culturally. This period, although before the main era of agricultural "improvement" in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, was nevertheless far from static in terms of agrarian development. From Scotland's 1560 Reformation to the 1707 Union of the English and Scottish kingdoms, extra-institutional opinion became more relevant as religious and constitutional tensions were exacerbated by the formation of a British composite monarchy in 1603. The reworking of protestations, petitions and oaths as vehicles for collective protest and the deployment of oral, written and printed forms of persuasive communication in Scots, English and Gaelic allowed contemporaries to recognise the opinions of the people and the nation outside of authorised assemblies, while stimulating state efforts to regulate and suppress opinion at large. Gains in literacy and printing aided, but did not determine, the practice of opinion politics, challenging dominant notions of the public sphere. As well as providing a new angle on the post-Reformation period in Scotland, this study outlines a new way of historicising public opinion, providing insights for historians of early modern Scotland, Britain and Europe and scholars concerned with public opinion as a political, social and cultural phenomenon"--

Book excerpt: This study presents a history of the literary culture of early-modern Scotland (1560-1625), based on extensive study of the literary manuscript. It argues for the importance of three key places of production of such manuscripts: the royal court, burghs and towns, and regional houses (stately homes, but also minor lairdly and non-aristocratic households). This attention to place facilitates a discussion of, respectively, courtly, urban or civic, and regional literary cultures. Sebastiaan Verweij's methodology stems from bibliographical scholarship and the study of the 'History of the Book', and more specifically, from a school of manuscript research that has invigorated early-modern English literary criticism over the last few decades. The Literary Culture of Early Modern Scotland will also intersect with a programme of reassessment of early-modern Scottish culture that is currently underway in Scottish studies. Traditional narratives of literary history have often regarded the Reformation of 1560 as heralding a terminal cultural decline, and the Union of Crowns of 1603, with the departure of king and court, was thought to have brought the briefest of renaissances (in the 1580s and 1590s) to an early end. This book purposefully straddles the Union, in order to make possible the rediscovery of Scotland's refined and sophisticated renaissance culture.
