Book excerpt: Up to now the theme of the artist in the service of Italian courts has been examined in various studies focused mostly on the High Renaissance, as though the phenomenon was relevant only to the XV and XVI centuries. It actually lasted much longer, spanning the whole longue durée of the lives of the courts of the ancient regime. The present volume intends to fill this gap, presenting for the first time a comprehensive examination of the subject of the court artist from sixteenth to seventeenth century and the transformations of this role. “Court artist” is here defined as one who received a regular salary, and was therefore attached to the court by a more or less exclusive service relationship. The book is divided in six chapters: each of them examines the position of the court artist in the service of the most important ruling families in Italy (the Savoy in Turin, the Gonzaga in Mantua, the Este in Modena, the Della Rovere in Pesaro and Urbino, the Medici in Florence) and in papal Rome, a particular and unique center of power.

The workshop brought together a number of scholars working in the fields Arabic Studies, Greek and Latin Studies, Septuaginta Studies, and Iranian Studies. The workshop concentrated on the transmission of texts and ideas across language barriers in the Eastern Mediterranean. The main focus was on literary and historical texts, but also scientific, pseudoscientific, and religious texts were discussed. The workshop and the resulting collection of articles shows clearly that there is still much to do in the field of translation studies in the Long Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The various cultures around the Mediterranean have always lived in close contact with each other, and translation of texts has played a central role in the intellectual interaction of these cultures. While parts of this interaction have received scholarly attention, others have been almost neglected. The aim of this volume is to direct attention to the manifold and vivid culture of translation around the Mediterranean.

Originally published in the same year as his monumental Work on Myth, Shipwreck with Spectator traces the evolution of the complex of metaphors related to the sea, to shipwreck, and to the role of the spectator in human culture from ancient Greece to modern times. The sea is one of humanity's oldest metaphors for life, and a sea journey, Blumenberg observes, has often stood for our journey through life. We all know the role that shipwrecks can play in this journey, and at some level we have all played witness to others' wrecks, standing in safety and knowing that there is nothing we can do to help, yet fixed comfortably or uncomfortably in our ambiguous role as spectator. Through Blumenberg's seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of letters, from ancient texts through nineteenth-century reminiscences and modern speeches, we see layer upon layer revealed in the meanings humans have given to these metaphors; and in this way we begin to understand what metaphors can do that more straightforward modes of expression cannot.
