Book The Illusion of Will Self and Time

Download or read book The Illusion of Will Self and Time written by Jonathan Bricklin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Seminary Co-op Notable Book of 2016 William James is often considered a scientist compromised by his advocacy of mysticism and parapsychology. Jonathan Bricklin argues James can also be viewed as a mystic compromised by his commitment to common sense. James wanted to believe in will, self, and time, but his deepest insights suggested otherwise. "Is consciousness already there waiting to be uncovered and is it a veridical revelation of reality?" James asked shortly before his death in 1910. A century after his death, research from neuroscience, physics, psychology, and parapsychology is making the case, both theoretically and experimentally, that answers James's question in the affirmative. By separating what James passionately wanted to believe, based on common sense, from what his insights and researches led him to believe, Bricklin shows how James himself laid the groundwork for this more challenging view of existence. The non-reality of will, self, and time is consistent with James's psychology of volition, his epistemology of self, and his belief that Newtonian, objective, even-flowing time does not exist.

Book A Search for the Source

Download or read book A Search for the Source written by Hilton L. Anderson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-08-24 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There never was a time when a sense of wonder was absent. Perhaps there were times when it was covered over by more pressing obligations imposed by living, but it was always there. This book is about the exploration of this source of wonder, attempting to understand it. The wonder about death is the most persistent. This wondering leads to questions about the meaning of existence, and the nature of man and God. Accepting religious statements of faith as explanations, never seemed satisfactory to a scientific mind that demanded proof. Casting a wide net for information led to the exploration of wide ranging fields of study: psychology, parapsychology, mysticism, Eastern religious practices, energy biology, astronomy, physics and the perennial philosophy underlying the major world religions. This book is the attempt to make sense of this wide ranging exploration and provide a meaningful view of the diversity encountered. There is an attempt to provide a convergence of meaning while leaving room for each individual to become his/her own explorer and interpreter. It is a presentation of rational fact, yet it is also an exploration of the limitations of rational thinking. This book is designed to help you on your journey of re-perception, bringing you to the brink of spiritual awakening.

Book The People s Advocate

Download or read book The People s Advocate written by Daniel Sheehan and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People's Advocate is the autobiography of American Constitutional Trial Attorney Daniel Sheehan. Sheehan traces his personal journey from his working–class roots through Harvard Law School and his initial career in private practice. His early disenchantment led to his return for further study at Harvard Divinity School, and rethinking the nature of his career. Eventually his role as President and Chief Trial Counselor for the famous Washington, D.C.–based Christic Institute would help define his role as America's preeminent cause lawyer. In The People's Advocate, Sheehan details "the inside story" of over a dozen historically significant American legal cases of the 20th Century, all of which he litigated. The remarkable cases covered in the book include both The Pentagon Papers Case in 1971 and The Watergate Burglary Case in 1973. In addition, Sheehan served as the Chief Attorney on The Karen Silkwood Case in 1976, which additionally revealed the C.I.A.'s Israeli Desk had been smuggling 98% bomb–grade plutonium to the State of Israel and to Iran. In 1984, he was the Chief Trial Counsel on The American Sanctuary Movement Case, establishing the right of American church workers to provide assistance to Central American political refugees fleeing Guatemalan and Salvadorian "death squads." His involvement with the sanctuary movement ultimately led to Sheehan's famous Iran/Contra Federal Civil Racketeering Case against the Reagan/Bush Administration, which he investigated, initiated, filed, and then litigated. The resulting "Iran/Contra Scandal" nearly brought down that Administration, leading Congress to consider the impeachment over a dozen of the top–ranking officials of the Reagan/Bush Administration. The People's Advocate is the "real story" of these and many other historic American cases, told from the unique point of view of a central lawyer.

Book My Bright Word

  • Pages : 602 pages

Download or read book My Bright Word written by Adi Da Samraj and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "My "Bright" Word, " a new edition of the collection of classic spiritual discourses originally published as "The Method of the Siddhas," Avatar Adi Da elucidates the fundamentals of "radical" self-understanding, or "His Revelation of the Way of Adidam." These include: --The basic principle of egoic existence, the search, which Avatar Adi Da later communicated in its simplest terms: "You want to feel good--because you feel bad. Therefore, you are seeking--in order to feel good." --The essential ego-fault and the means for overcoming it: (1) Truth cannot be realized by seeking for it. The seeking itself is the problem. When there is no seeking, Truth (or Reality) is obvious. (2) Freedom (or Divine Liberation) is not dependent on any objective entity or process. Freedom (or Divine Liberation) is always already the case. --The single logic of egoic life: the logic (or process) of separation itself, of enclosure and immunity, informs every function of the living being, every experience, every act, every event. --The grace-given process of "radical" self-understanding: observe your own self-contracting activity. Understand your own self-contracting activity. Transcend your own self-contracting activity. In modern language, this volume teaches the ancient all-time trans-egoic truth, transforming the student by paradox and by example. Consciousness, understanding, and finally the awakened self are the potential rewards.

Book How to Talk About Spiritual Encounters

Download or read book How to Talk About Spiritual Encounters written by Peter J. Adams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a new and innovative way of understanding how language is used when people describe their spiritual and mystical encounters. Early chapters provide overviews of the nature of spiritual encounters, how commonly they occur, and the role of language. The book then develops a unique way of understanding the dynamics of talking about spirituality, using original research to support this perspective. In particular, Peter J. Adams explores how this characteristically vague way of speaking can be viewed as an intentional and not an incidental aspect of such communications because certain types of vagueness have the capacity to engage the imaginative participation of receptive listeners. This expressive vagueness is achieved by embedding missing bits, or “gaps,” in the flow of what is described and these in turn provide sites for listeners to insert their own content. Later chapters focus on practical ways people (including helping professionals) can improve their skills in talking about their spiritual encounters. All content is situated in café conversations between four people each of whom is, in their own way, concerned with the challenges they face in converting the content of their encounters into words.

Book Sexuality and New Religious Movements

Download or read book Sexuality and New Religious Movements written by J. Lewis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues relating to sexuality, eroticism and gender are often connected to religious beliefs and practices, but also to prejudices against and fear of religious groups that adopt alternative approaches to sexuality. This is especially apparent in connection with new religious movements, which many times find themselves accused by the media and anti-cultists of promoting illicit and controversial views on sexuality. This anthology aims to critically investigate the role of sexuality in a number of new religious movements, including Mormon fundamentalist communities, the Branch Davidians, the Osho movement, the Raël movement, contemporary Wicca and Satanism, in addition to the teachings of Adidam and Gurdjieff on sexuality.

Book Counseling the Terminally Ill

Download or read book Counseling the Terminally Ill written by George S. Lair and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 1996 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing a focus on the spiritual needs of death and dying, the theme of this book is that the focus of counselling with people who are dying should be on the psychospiritual aspects of death and dying. It is based on two assumptions - that death and anxiety, not pain, are the most critical issues for the dying, and that the time of dying is an opportunity for growth and transformation. The author believes that it is imperative for counselling professionals to realize that at this time understanding and caring are primary.
