Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Materialism and Ultimate Conceptions The pseudo-philosophy, characteristic of the period, has arisen from the broad statement of material views by popular writers on scientific subjects and the generally materialistic tendency of lecture-room teachings. If these teachings are accepted - God (if they admit such) is unthinkable; Life and mind molecular arrangements; Vitality, electrical or physical force; Man, a sensible automaton; Creation, but the potence of matter; the casual displacing the actual, the methods of Nature become the Causal fact, and Man's Immortality, final in the expression of Fame. Thus bereft of God, as a Creator and Providence, and of Immortality - thinking man in death meets annihilation. The object of this treatise is to discuss these dicta in plain language; and when words are used which have a scientific as well as a general meaning, the latter is to be taken. The effort has been made to probe the methods of nature as disclosed in her mechanics, chemistry and physics, and to find, as far as may be, the ultimates on which the Kosmos is reared, whereby each reader may arrive at a conclusion, without having wholly to rely upon authoritative dogma. Authority should be accepted only when supported by evidences; these evidences, reflected upon and discussed, may then be allowed to stand in the place of an independent idea. Hypotheses are indispensable to research, but they should be examined with a rigid scepticism, for "scientific imagination" is only misleading when scepticism is lulled. The method of nature is to be sought in the grand generalizations of Malpighi, Grove, and Darwin. Principles are the bases of the Kosmos - Infinitesimals, its explanation. A knowledge of these infinitesimals constitutes Science: Philosophy has broader distinctions and a deeper aim. Our perceptions of external objects are sense effects exciting consciousness; our conceptions, ideas as units in intelligence impressed on the consciousness; and when impressed, the impulsions by which we Will, Direct, and Control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word 'materialism' is ambiguous: it designates a moral doc trine as well as a philosophy and, indeed, an entire world view. Moral materialism is identical with hedonism, or the doctrine that humans should pursue only their own pleasure. Philosophical ma terialismis the view that the real worId is composed exclusively of material things. The two doctrines are logically independent: hedonism is consistent with immaterialism, and materialism is compatible with high minded morals. We shall be concerned ex c1usively with philosophical materialism. And we shall not confuse it with realism, or the epistemological doctrine that knowIedge, or at any rate scientific knowledge, attempts to represent reality. Philosophical materialism is not a recent fad and it is not a solid block: it is as old as philosophy and it has gone through six quite different stages. The first was ancient materialism, centered around Greek and Indian atomism. The second was the revival of the first during the 17th century. The third was 18th century ma terialism, partly derived from one side of Descartes' ambiguous legacy. The fourth was the mid-19th century "scientific" material ism, which flourished mainly in Germany and England, and was tied to the upsurge of chemistry and biology. The fifth was dialec tical and historical materialism, which accompanied the consolida tion of the socialist ideology. And the sixth or current stage, evolved mainly by Australian and American philosophers, is aca demic and nonpartisan but otherwise very heterogeneous. Ancient materialism was thoroughly mechanistic.

Book Contemporary Materialism Its Ontology and Epistemology

Download or read book Contemporary Materialism Its Ontology and Epistemology written by Gustavo E. Romero and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date revision of materialism’s central tenets, its main varieties, and the place of materialistic philosophy vis a vis scientific knowledge. Materialism has been the subject of extensive and rich controversies since Robert Boyle introduced the term for the first time in the 17th century. But what is materialism and what can it offer today? The term is usually defined as the worldview according to which everything real is material. Nevertheless, there is no philosophical consensus about whether the meaning of matter can be enlarged beyond the physical. As a consequence, materialism is often defined in stark exclusive and reductionist terms: whatever exists is either physical or ontologically reducible to it. This conception, if consistent, mutilates reality, excluding the ontological significance of political, economic, sociocultural, anthropological and psychological realities. Starting from a new history of materialism, the present book focuses on the central ontological and epistemological debates aroused by today’s leading materialist approaches, including some little known to an anglophone readership. The key concepts of matter, system, emergence, space and time, life, mind, and software are checked over and updated. Controversial issues such as the nature of mathematics and the place of reductionism are also discussed from different materialist approaches. As a result, materialism emerges as a powerful, indispensable scientifically-supported worldview with a surprising wealth of nuances and possibilities.

Book Mind and Cosmos

Book excerpt: Thomas Nagel argues that the widely accepted world view of materialist naturalism is untenable. The mind-body problem cannot be confined to the relation between animal minds and animal bodies. If materialism cannot accommodate consciousness and other mind-related aspects of reality, then we must abandon a purely materialist understanding of nature in general, extending to biology, evolutionary theory, and cosmology.

Book The Collapse of Materialism

Download or read book The Collapse of Materialism written by Philip Comella and published by Rainbow Ridge. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Philip Comella, takes a fresh and bold look at the debate between science and religion--and attempts to go farther than any other book to unite them. For years, we have been led to believe that the universe traces its roots back to the Big Bang, a cataclysmic explosion of ethereal energy that resulted in the formation of the planets, stars, and everything in-between. Suppose, though, that the cosmos wasn't, in fact, borne of a random eruption--but rather stems from the ever-evolving imagination of a multi-dimensional dreaming mind? Such a drastically different perspective would no doubt change the way we see not only ourselves, but also our place in the infinite realm of the universe. Such is the central premise of The Collapse of Materialism. Probing, well written, and thoroughly researched, Comella's insightful volume serves as a treatise on the popular misconceptions that the world of science would lead us to believe about the origins--and subsequent development-- of the universe. Comella paints the compelling picture of life as a purposeful, directed means to an end. Bolstered by a wide range of enlightening sources, including religion, eastern philosophy--and science itself--this book breaks important ground regarding the limited purview of life as we've come to know it, encouraging readers to explore the unfettered depths of a new vision of universal purpose." --Dominique Sessons, Apex Reviews

Book Science Versus Materialism Is Matter the Only Reality

Download or read book Science Versus Materialism Is Matter the Only Reality written by Reginald Otto Kapp and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpts: THIS book is an attempt to solve, in a way which any interested layman can understand, a problem which has been hotly debated throughout the centuries. Is Matter the only reality? Philosophers, theologians, scientists as well as others who can lay claim to no specialized knowledge, but whose concerns range beyond the petty tasks each day brings forth, have all said their say. And some of them have said yes, others no. Those who say yes are called materialists. Those who say no have no collective name. They all believe that there are other things besides Matter, but they are not all interested in the same things. "Matter is not everything," say many philosophers. "There is also Mind. This can be proved to have a separate existence." "Matter is not everything," say the theologians. "There are also a God and the Souls of men. Those who do not realize this will fail to seek that spiritual guidance which alone can raise men above the level of brute creation." "Matter is not everything," say various idealists. Among them are teachers, moralists, poets. These insist on the non-material reality of "higher things," of beauty, truth and goodness. In the materialism of our age they see the risk that mankind may ignore those things which make life most worth living. Values disappear, or, at least, have but a precarious existence in materialistic doctrine, so that, to the idealist, it seems that the materialist says: "What harm if the temple be destroyed? The stones remain." "Yes, Matter is everything. Science proves it," says the materialist to this heterogeneous collection of opponents with their various interests, their various reasons for opposing him, their various ways of saying what they think. And always he feels a little contemptuous since they base their beliefs on considerations which he does not regard as valid. Their attitude seems to him to be due to ignorance and prejudice. For they fail to build as he does, or believe he does, "on the facts of science." ... In this book we want to revive the old controversy and to do so in such a way as to secure the attention of both sides. We want to provide both with a common meeting ground or shall we call it a battleground? We want to put an end to the complacency with which those who hold tenaciously to their own opinions talk much and write much, but listen only to themselves or to those with whom they agree. At the same time we do not intend to seek a compromise. We shall take sides and offer our services (for what they may be worth) wholeheartedly to those who are opposed to materialism.

Book Intangible Materialism

Download or read book Intangible Materialism written by Ronald Schleifer and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking as his point of departure Norbert Weinera s statement that information is basic to understanding materialism in our era, Ronald Schleifer shows how discoveries of modern physics have altered conceptions of matter and energy and the ways in which both information theory and the study of literature can enrich these conceptions. Expanding the reductive notion of a the materiala as simply matter and energy, he formulates a new, more inclusive idea of materialism.
