Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book clarifies the distinction between philosophy of medicine and medical philosophy, expanding the focus from the ‘knowing that’ of the first to the ‘knowing how’ of the latter. The idea of patient and provider self-discovery becomes the method and strategy at the basis of therapeutic treatment. It develops the concept of ‘Central Medicine’, aimed at overcoming the dichotomies of Western–Eastern medicine and Traditional–Integrative approaches. Evidence-based and patient-centered medicine are analyzed in the context of the debate on placebo and non-specific effects alongside clinical research on the patient-doctor relationship, and the interactive nature of human relationships in general, including factors such as environment, personal beliefs, and perspectives on life’s meaning and purpose. Tomasi’s research incorporates neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and medicine in a clear, readable, and detailed way, satisfying the needs of professionals, students, and anyone who enjoys the exploration of the complexity of human mind, brain, and heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is considerable interest now in the contemporary lives of the so-called traditional medicines of South Asia and beyond. "Doctoring Traditions, "which examines Ayurveda in British India, particularly Bengal, roughly from the 1860s to the 1930s, is a welcome departure even within the available work in the area. For in it the author subtly interrogates the therapeutic changes that created modern Ayurveda. He does so by exploring how Ayurvedic ideas about the body changed dramatically in the modern period and by breaking with the oft-repeated but scantily examined belief that changes in Ayurvedic understandings of the body were due to the introduction of cadaveric dissections and Western anatomical knowledge. "Doctoring Traditions" argues that the actual motor of change were a number of small technologies that were absorbed into Ayurvedic practice at the time, including thermometers and microscopes. In each of its five core chapters the book details how the adoption of a small technology set in motion a dramatic refiguration of the body. This book will be required reading for historians both of medicine and South Asia.

Book Ethical Considerations in Indian Science of Health and Medicine with Special Reference to Caraka Samhita

This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief review of Indian Science of Health and Medicine with Special Reference to Ayurveda The study of norms and values is one of the essential activities of philosophy and philosophy as an intellectual discipline of human knowledge. In the Indian tradition, the study of principles and values with reference to reality and life has seldom been disassociated or independent. The western division of science, art and Philosophy, (and religion too) is not aptly or rigorously applicable to various disciplines of human knowledge in the Indian tradition. A discipline of knowledge covers under its scope, reality on the one hand, and life on the other hand, simultaneously. Hence, in their original forms, till their mature growth, disciplines of human knowledge have been independent philosophies. Ayurveda, popularly known as the science of health and medicine, is likewise a complete system of principles and values to study human life with a focus on health, longevity and medicine to keep life happy and energetic in functions and activities constituting the course of life. Hence it becomes a primary concern of a modem student of Philosophy to study and bring forth the Philosophical aspects of Ayurveda. The present dissertation aims at working out the ethical aspect of Ayurveda from the modem point of view. 1.1. Why Ethical Considerations? Human life has evolved immensely during the course of the last two thousand years. With changing times, man has adapted fairly well to his natural habitat and made his life more comfortable. However, though with the increase of comfort, human life has evolved to become a prosperous and lavish in a few mundane aspects, yet, at the same time the complexities of human life are increasing with every instance of progress and achievement. One can notice drastic changes in the lifestyle of humankind today if compared to that of the tenth or fifteenth century populace. The evolution of man on the rational level is,
