Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science looks so complex but its basics are easy to understand. The first book, is the true story of seven important ideas of science. It starts with lonely atoms that join to make everything we can see. Next, energies are explained and why they matter to me. The second book, focuses on the science of objects that I use everyday. Science makes sense when I can see it in action. There are connections: between mummies and glass; frog legs and electricity; light and movies. Science connects me with the objects and orbits around my world.

Book excerpt: The development of science, technology and industry in the near future requires new materials and devices, which will differ in many aspects from that of past years. This is due to the fact that many sophisticated processes and new materials are being invented. The computer engineering field is a typical example. The main building block for these achievements is science, and leading it is physics, which provides the foundation for the chemical, biological and atomic industries.Physics for Chemists contains many instructive examples complete with detailed analysis and tutorials to evaluate the student's level of understanding. Specifically it is focused to give a robust and relevant background to chemistry students and to eliminate those aspects of physics which are not relevant to these students. This book is aimed at chemistry students and researches who would by using the book, not only be able to perform relevant physical experiments, but would then also be in a position to provide a well founded explanation of the results.* Fundamental principles of modern physics are explained in parallel with their applications to chemistry and technology* Large number of practical examples and tasks * Presentation of new aspects of chemical science and technology e.g. nanotechnology and synthesis of new magnetic materials

Book Nonlinear Systems Of Partial Differential Equations Applications To Life And Physical Sciences

Download or read book Nonlinear Systems Of Partial Differential Equations Applications To Life And Physical Sciences written by Anthony W Leung and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-08-28 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the theory of diffusion-reaction equations starting from the Volterra-Lotka systems developed in the eighties for Dirichlet boundary conditions. It uses the analysis of applicable systems of partial differential equations as a starting point for studying upper-lower solutions, bifurcation, degree theory and other nonlinear methods. It also illustrates the use of semigroup, stability theorems and W2ptheory. Introductory explanations are included in the appendices for non-expert readers. The first chapter covers a wide range of steady-state and stability results involving prey-predator, competing and cooperating species under strong or weak interactions. Many diagrams are included to easily understand the description of the range of parameters for coexistence. The book provides a comprehensive presentation of topics developed by numerous researchers. Large complex systems are introduced for modern research in ecology, medicine and engineering.Chapter 3 combines the theories of earlier chapters with the optimal control of systems involving resource management and fission reactors. This is the first book to present such topics at research level. Chapter 4 considers persistence, cross-diffusion, and boundary induced blow-up, etc. The book also covers traveling or systems of waves, coupled Navier-Stokes and Maxwell systems, and fluid equations of plasma display. These should be of interest to life and physical scientists.

Book Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths

Download or read book Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical spectroscopy has been instrumental in the discovery of many lanthanide elements. In return, these elements have always played a prominent role in lighting devices and light conversion technologies (Auer mantles, incandescent lamps, lasers, cathode-ray and plasma displays). They are also presently used in highly sensitive luminescent bio-analyses and cell imaging. This volume of the Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths is entirely devoted to the photophysical properties of these elements. It is dedicated to the late Professor William T (Bill) Carnall who has pioneered the understanding of lanthanide spectra in the 1960's and starts with a Dedication to this scientist. The following five chapters describe various aspects of lanthanide spectroscopy and its applications. Chapters 231 presents state-of-the-art theoretical calculations of lanthanide energy levels and transition intensities. It is followed by a review (Chapter 232) on both theoretical and experimental aspects of f-d transitions, a less well known field of lanthanide spectroscopy, yet very important for the design of new optical materials. Chapter 233 describes how confinement effects act on the photophysical properties of lanthanides when they are inserted into nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanowires, nanotubes, insulating and semiconductor nanocrystals. The use of lanthanide chelates for biomedical analyses is presented in Chapter 234; long lifetimes of the excited states of lanthanide ions allow the use of time-resolved spectroscopy, which leads to highly sensitive analyses devoid of background effect from the autofluorescence of the samples. The last review (Chapter 235) provides a comprehensive survey of near-infrared (NIR) emitting molecular probes and devices, spanning an all range of compounds, from simple chelates to macrocyclic complexes, heterometallic functional edifices, coordination polymers and other extended structures. Applications ranging from telecommunications to light-emitting diodes and biomedical analyses are assessed.- Provides a comprehensive look at optical spectroscopy and its applications- A volume in the continuing authoritative series which deals with the chemistry, materials science, physics and technology of the rare earth elements
