Terman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Intelligence of School Children How Children Differ in Ability, the Use of Mental Tests in School Grading, and the Proper Education of Exceptional Children The book has been written primarily for the grade teacher, and as an introduction to the study of The Measurement of Intelligence. Its greatest usefulness probably will be as a book for Teacher Study Clubs and State Reading Circles, and as an introductory textbook for students in normal schools. A careful study'of this book by the teachers of a city or State would contribute wonderfully to the intelligent han dling, of children, and the study of it by prospective teachers would open up entirely new conceptions as to educational procedure, and would lead to a far more satisfactory direction of the exceptional children found in every school. The book will also prove of much value to parents interested in the education of their children, and especially to those whose children vary much in either direction from the normal. Book The Intelligence of School Children

Download or read book The Intelligence of School Children written by Lewis Madison Terman and published by . This book was released on 1919 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book has been written for the rank and file of teachers, school supervisors, and normal-school students. Its purpose is to illustrate the large individual differences in original endowment which exist among school children and to show the practical bearing of these differences upon the everyday problems of classroom management and school administration. It does not treat, except incidentally, the psychological principles underlying intelligence tests. Some of these problems the writer has touched upon elsewhere. The technique of giving the tests of the revised Binet scale and the general significance of mental tests for education have been set forth in some detail in another volume of this series, The Measurement of Intelligence, which should be read in connection with the present volume. The writer's present aim is the more practical one of showing how the results of mental tests may be put to everyday use in the grade classification and in the educational guidance of school children"--Preface. Book Condensed Guide for the Stanford Revision of the Binet Simon Intelligence Tests Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Condensed Guide for the Stanford Revision of the Binet-Simon Intelligence Tests The Binet-Simon tests had been in use in America for only a few years when their educational value for the blind was recognized by Mr. R. B. Irwin, then Supervisor of the Department for the Blind in the Cleveland public schools. In the summer of 1914 he visited Dr. H. H. Goddard at Vineland, N. J., to discuss the question of adapting them for use with pupils without vision. Taking Goddard's translation of the 1911 edition of the Binet scale as a basis, they struck out those tests which could not be given without the aid of vision, made additions from various sources, and arranged the whole collection of tests in year groups according to Irwin's judgment of the abilities of blind children. In collaboration with Dr. Goddard, Dr. E. A. Doll and Miss Elisabeth S. Kite of Vineland, Irwin was able, during the succeeding year, to have these tests tried out in various homes for blind babies, in residential schools for the blind, and in classes for the blind and the partially-seeing in the public schools. In 1915, Irwin arranged to have Dr. T. H. Haines test the pupils of the Ohio State School for the Blind, and in 1916, Haines published a report upon his use of the year scale and presented a revision of the Yerkes Point Scale adapted to the blind. During the same period, Dr. W. B. Drummond was testing pupils in various schools for the blind in England and Scotland, and in 1920 he published a Binet Scale for the Blind and a Provisional Point Scale for the Blind, building upon the work of Irwin and Haines. Systematic routine testing with Irwin's adaptation had also been started in 1916 by Miss Edith M. Taylor at Perkins Institution for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts, and by Miss Katherine Roese at the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind in Overbrook, Philadelphia. During the next few years all the pupils in eight other residential schools were tested, so that by the end of 1922 the Irwin adaptation had been given to more than 1,600 subjects with defective vision. The data thus accumulated seemed to justify an attempt to standardize the tests and to distribute a Guide for the use of competent persons in schools and clinics, where it might be necessary to examine children who had not vision enough to take the Binet tests in their ordinary form. Book Intelligence Tests and School Reorganization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Intelligence Tests and School Reorganization Classic Reprint written by Lewis M. Terman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intelligence Tests and School Reorganization This book is in no sense an inventory of the important experiments now going on in the United States in connection with the use of intelligence and educational tests. Such an inventory would have required entirely too much space and would have involved an amount of repetition which could not have been other than tedious. Instead, experiments have been selected which are typical of the leading methods of readjustment now being attempted in different parts of the country. All of them illustrate important types of procedure, but involve varying degrees of generality. At one extreme is the Oakland plan, described by Dr. Dickson, which affects the entire school enrollment and the entire administrative system. At the other is the work of Dr. Fernald, which concerns itself primarily with individual cases of maladjustment and has to do with pedagogical method rather than school organization. Between these extremes is the Los Angeles work, described by Dr. Sutherland. The latter, although originally intended to meet the needs of individual misfits, has resulted in the working out of methods of individual instruction which appear to have applicability with children in general. The chapter by Dr. Franzen illustrates in a most interesting way how the results of intelligence and educational tests can be combined so as to serve as a better basis for rating the performance of pupils and the efficiency of schools. The chapter by Superintendent Tupper shows how much can be done, even in a small city and without elaborate reorganization, to improve the classification of children. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mental Tests for School Use, Vol. 17 In the spring of 1919 Doctor Holley, while acting as assistant director of the Bureau of Educational Research of the University of Illinois, tried out six group intelligence scales in the schools of Champaign, Illinois. A kind of survey, narrow but intensive in character, was thus afforded. The data, how ever, with a little more analysis could be made to yield important results as to the reliabilty and validity of each of these six scales as instruments for measuring intelligence. With this thought in mind Doctor Holley carried out some of the necessary analyses and wrote the monograph which follows. Book Manual of Directions for Giving and Scoring the Dearborn Group Tests of Intelligence

Download or read book Manual of Directions for Giving and Scoring the Dearborn Group Tests of Intelligence written by Walter Fenno Dearborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Directions for Giving and Scoring the Dearborn Group Tests of Intelligence: Series I, General Examinations 1, 2 and 3, for Grades I to III The room teachers may then assist by entering the names and birthdays, etc. (see page but should not give any other assistance during the progress of the tests. A good plan to follow, after a careful study of the directions, is to jot down on a copy of the tests the chief facts to be kept in mind. This record may be quickly referred to as needed during the progress of the tests. When the directions are read from the manual there is apt to be a loss of spontaneity in the giving of the tests, and con fusion and delay in looking from the manual to the test sheets. When the tests are given for the first time by an examiner, it is often well to try them out on a small group of children from some other grade a sixth grade) than those it is desired to test, and then to begin the testing with a third grade, since any lack of familiar ity with the directions will not cause as much difficulty as in the lower grades. In the first grade the tests should usually be given in three different periods, or an interval of at least ten minutes for change and recreationshould intervene between general examinations Nos. I and 2 and between Nos. 2 and 3. In the second and third grades the tests may be given in two periods with a short interval between them. As is indicated by the title page, it is best that pupils regard these exercises as in the nature of games and puzzles rather than as some new form of examination. They should be encouraged to play the games as well as they can. While the tests are being given the room teacher should be asked to copy from the register upon the accompanying record sheet the alphabetical list of her pupils with the birthday of each one 1912 - 11 and keep this list with the test sheets for the room. After the papers have been collected, she should examine them to see that all names are legibly written, and should enter the date of birthday again in the appropriate place on the title page of each set of tests. In giving the directions the examiner 'should hold a copy of the test sheet before the class, and in pointing to the place where the pupils are to write or draw (see, for example, the first test sheet), make sure that the pupils on his extreme right and left, as well as those in the rear rows, see where he is pointing.
