Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Program in Physical Education The report of Clark W. Hetherington, herewith submitted, on a proposed "School Program in Physical Education" is very broad in its scope. Beginning with a concise review of the rise of physical education in the public schools, it proceeds to a destructive critical analysis of the attempts that have been made to adapt European methods of physical education to American schools, and thence it passes to a constructive scientific presentation of the problems, objectives, and principles involved in the organization of a school program. Perhaps the greatest contribution made by the author in this report is to be found in his treatment of the primary aims of physical education. He shows how the big-muscle activities must be organized as an essential and bulky phase of child life, and then how these big-muscle activities must be organized in such ways as to secure their inherent values for the development of the fundamental intellectual, emotional, nervous, and organic powers underlying efficiency in life. Mr. Hetherington has had much experience and much success both as a teacher and as a supervisor of physical education. His theories, therefore, have been submitted to the test of experiment in school work and on the playground. They are the conclusions derived from long observation and much experimentation as well as from thought and study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Play Days: Their Organization and Correlation With a Program of Physical Education and Health A Play Day is the coming together of two or more schools for the athletic activity Where competition is based on some arbitrarily chosen division and not on the school-against-school system. One school invites other schools within a nearby radius to send a definite number of girls to its home grounds. These girls are divided by lot into teams that take part in the various games. Teams adopt the names of colors and are known throughout the day as the reds, blues, yellows, etc. In this way there is an equal number from each school on every team. Download or read book Minimum Essentials in an Adequate Physical Education Program for High Schools Classic Reprint written by Francis Ferdinand Smith and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minimum Essentials in an Adequate Physical Education Program for High Schools As indicated by the title, the defelopment of this thesis must necessarily be comprehensive rather than in tensive. Since it is to cover the whole field of physi cal education for high schools. No one problem can betdealt with in minute detail- the purpose of the paper is-rather to bring together the broad general principles which should form the basis of a good physical education program for high schools. Enough of detail, however, will be used to make the various phases of the problem clear. Specific, and practical. Whenever it is impossible. Because of the scope of the problem. To use that amount of detail which.would most completely develop an essential point, definite refer ences will be made to articles or books in which that point has been covered fully. Thus it is hoped to make a unified and condensed report of what might otherwise seem to be too general a problem for a thesis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Physical Education: For Primary and Grammar Schools, Junior High Schools and High Schools From whatever point of view we study the value of motor education as a part of every child's education, we find it of such great importance both pedagogically and hygienically that we cannot consider it a minor phase of education any longer. In fact, a brief review of the factors which have always influenced human growth and development, physical as well as mental, must convince us of the need of paying more attention to the motor education of our children. Nobody will deny that the environment of a child is, next to its racial inheritance, the most powerful factor in its development towards mature physical, mental, moral, and social efficiency. Book The Organization and Administration of Physical Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Organization and Administration of Physical Education Classic Reprint written by Jesse Feiring Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organization and Administration of Physical Education The development of physical education in America has been desultory always and, at times, even aimless. The manual training movement was forgotten in the enthusiasm over Dio Lewis' New Gymnastics. Catharine Beecher's Calisthenics for women lasted long enough to develop a reaction towards other types of work. Delsarte had its short moment; now it is gone. Too often we have installed the work of physical education with a shout, we have supported it with cheers, and we have seen it dwindle and die without even a tear. It is a pleasure to record a different temper today. School people are serious in their consideration of the matter. Principals, superintendents, and presidents are making plans for modern physical education, after careful study of the needs of boys and girls and the opportunities that physical education can offer to help meet these needs. The old systems, the old traditions, so carefully nourished by certain normal schools and training centers, are being subjected to a criticism that will eventually relegate to the limbo of forgotten things, the unscientific, the unserviceable, and the unsound practice of our programs. School men and physical education experts are seeking guides and standards for the work and are unwilling to accept the aims, purposes, guides, and standards of any school of physical education unless they are based on scientific foundations. Book The Gary Public Schools Physical Training and Play Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gary Public Schools Physical Training and Play Classic Reprint written by Lee F. Hanmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gary Public Schools Physical Training and Play In the last few years both laymen and professional educators have engaged in a lively controversy as to the merits and defects, advantages and disadvantages of what has come to be called the Gary idea or the Gary plan. The rapidly increasing literature bearing on the subject is, however, deficient in details and too often partisan in tone. The present study was undertaken by the General Education Board at the request of the Gary school authorities for the purpose of presenting an accurate and comprehensive account of the Gary schools in their significant aspects. In the several volumes in which the main features of the Gary schools are separately considered, the reader will observe that, after presenting facts, each of the authors discusses or - in technical phrase - attempts to evaluate the Gary plan from the angle of his particular interest. Facts were gathered in a patient, painstaking, and objective fashion; and those who want facts, and facts only, will, it is believed, find them in the descriptive and statistical portions of the respective studies.
