Download or read book Engineering Graduate Education and Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of engineering graduate study in the United States, its future, and its relationship to research are examined in this report of the National Research Council Committee on the Education and Utilization of the Engineer. The study focuses principally on increasing the supply of highly qualified doctoral recipients who are United States citizens particularly with respect to academic employment. It also gives attention to the importance of master's level work and to the need for access to part-time programs for engineers who are employed full time. Report sections include: (1) an executive summary; (2) the background (reviewing previous reports and studies in engineering education); (3) supply and demand (providing data on the supply of Ph.D.s and recommendations for increasing the supply); (4) women and minorities in engineering (examining representation patterns); (5) master's degree (presenting findings and recommendations); (6) doctor's degree (with findings and recommendations); (7) nontraditional graduate programs (analyzing existing approaches); (8) engineering faculty (addressing needs for faculty development); and (9) university-industry interactions (discussing conflicting and complementary interests). A list of 66 reference notes is included. (ML)

Book Understanding Measures of Faculty Impact and the Role of Engineering Societies

Download or read book Understanding Measures of Faculty Impact and the Role of Engineering Societies written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 26, 2017, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), held a workshop in Washington, DC, on the engagement of engineering societies in undergraduate engineering education. Since then, the NAE has held a series of follow-up regional workshops to investigate specific issues identified in the January 2017 workshop as deserving of further discussion and evaluation. The second in this series of supplemental workshops was held on February 12, 2018. It brought together about 45 representatives of professional societies, academic institutions, and businesses to explore the role of engineering societies in enhancing understanding of faculty impact on the engineering profession as part of the reappointment, promotion, and tenure (RPT) process. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Forces Shaping the U S Academic Engineering Research Enterprise

Download or read book Forces Shaping the U S Academic Engineering Research Enterprise written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-08-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way in which academic engineering research is financed and public expectations for the outcomes from such research are changing at an unprecedented rate. The decrease in support of defense-related research, coupled with the realization that many U.S. technological products are no longer competitive in the global market, has sent a shock wave through research universities that train engineers. This book argues for several concrete actions on the part of universities, government, and industry to ensure the flow and relevance of technical talent to meet national social and economic goals, to maintain a position of leadership in the global economy, and to preserve and enhance the nation's engineering knowledge base.

Book Educating the Engineer of 2020

Download or read book Educating the Engineer of 2020 written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-11-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating the Engineer of 2020 is grounded by the observations, questions, and conclusions presented in the best-selling book The Engineer of 2020: Visions of Engineering in the New Century. This new book offers recommendations on how to enrich and broaden engineering education so graduates are better prepared to work in a constantly changing global economy. It notes the importance of improving recruitment and retention of students and making the learning experience more meaningful to them. It also discusses the value of considering changes in engineering education in the broader context of enhancing the status of the engineering profession and improving the public understanding of engineering. Although certain basics of engineering will not change in the future, the explosion of knowledge, the global economy, and the way engineers work will reflect an ongoing evolution. If the United States is to maintain its economic leadership and be able to sustain its share of high-technology jobs, it must prepare for this wave of change.

Book Teaching Engineering Second Edition

Download or read book Teaching Engineering Second Edition written by Phillip C. Wankat and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of professors have never had a formal course in education, and the most common method for learning how to teach is on-the-job training. This represents a challenge for disciplines with ever more complex subject matter, and a lost opportunity when new active learning approaches to education are yielding dramatic improvements in student learning and retention. This book aims to cover all aspects of teaching engineering and other technical subjects. It presents both practical matters and educational theories in a format useful for both new and experienced teachers. It is organized to start with specific, practical teaching applications and then leads to psychological and educational theories. The "practical orientation" section explains how to develop objectives and then use them to enhance student learning, and the "theoretical orientation" section discusses the theoretical basis for learning/teaching and its impact on students. Written mainly for PhD students and professors in all areas of engineering, the book may be used as a text for graduate-level classes and professional workshops or by professionals who wish to read it on their own. Although the focus is engineering education, most of this book will be useful to teachers in other disciplines. Teaching is a complex human activity, so it is impossible to develop a formula that guarantees it will be excellent. However, the methods in this book will help all professors become good teachers while spending less time preparing for the classroom. This is a new edition of the well-received volume published by McGraw-Hill in 1993. It includes an entirely revised section on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and new sections on the characteristics of great teachers, different active learning methods, the application of technology in the classroom (from clickers to intelligent tutorial systems), and how people learn.
