Book Elementary Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Electricity Classic Reprint written by Sydney George Starling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Electricity AN attempt has been made in this book to represent the subject of electricity in a logical manner, and to keep in View its present-day aspect as well as its history. Magnetism is no longer treated as a separate subject, as modern theory holds that magnetism is an attribute of electricity in motion, that is, of the electric current. As an introduction to the subject one of the most familiar applications of electricity is Chosen - the electric incandescent lamp, and from this the rest is developed. Those branches of magnetism which stand apart from the main thread of the treatment of electricity, namely, terrestrial magnetism and the magnetic properties of materials, are relegated to the two last chapters. One of the most difficult conceptions for the student, that of potential, is introduced in the treatment of electricity at rest, that is, electrostatics, as it is here a simple quantity. Its relation to the rate of working in the case of a current then follows easily. While fitted for classes of students studying electricity with an examination in view, the book is also intended to give them a wide outlook upon the subject in its present state of development. For this reason chapters on electric waves and wireless telegraphy and telephony, electrons and X-rays and radioactivity are added; in fact there is a tendency in modern examinations to introduce these subjects to a small extent in order to make electricity a living rather than a historical subject. Only well-established facts have been included, but these prepare the way for the intensely interesting subject of the modern theories of the constitution of matter which the student may follow later. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Basic Electricity Preparing Basic Electricity for publication the authors worked with certain requirements definitely in mind. First, the content of the book had to cover and teach the fundamentals set forth in the outline approved by the War Department and the Office of Education. Second, and of equal importance, the treatment of the basic facts and principles had to be suitable for use in one semester of the third or fourth year of high school. And third, the authors kept in mind the purpose that lies back of this course which has been called forth by the necessities of the day. Book An Introduction to Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Electricity Classic Reprint written by Bruno Kolbe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Electricity The book, therefore, seems to me admirably adapted for the instruction of a class, but there is another point of view from which it may be regarded. If the man in the street, or, in other words, a person of ordinary information and intelligence who has passed through the ordinary school curriculum, wishes to obtain some insight into the nature of electricity, there is hardly any English book at present to which he can be referred. Diagrammatic descriptions of machines for the commercial pro duction of electrical energy will hardly help him to what he wants, nor will the analysis of compli cated instruments, like Lord Kelvin's multicellular voltmeter. Here, on the other hand, he should find many simple experiments, which, even without actually performing them, should give him, when read, a fair apprehension of the laws they are intended to illustrate, and should enable him to appreciate the many popular lectures now delivered on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity and Magnetism: Lessons of the National School of Electricity; Prepared Under the Immediate Direction of the Faculty; General Course Oung men and women, and older ones too, who have time and money at their disposal, who have been blessed with a sufficient preparatory education, and who desire to learn some thing about electricity either for pleasure or profit, may do so by entering and taking the very comprehensive courses at the colleges and technical schools. But there are many of our brightest mechan ics, artisans and business men who have not had the benefits of a sufficient primary education, especially in mathematics, to enable them to pass the more or less exacting entrance examinations required by the technical schools and colleges, and these and many others also may not be able to part with the time or money necessary to secure these benefits. It is to these classes of people that the National School of Electricity especially appeals, and to meet their require ments, several conditions must be met. Ist. The course of instruction must be of an eminently practical character so that the knowledge acquired may be immediately utilized. 2d. The course must be furnished at times and places con venient to participants during their leisure hours as they cannot go to school it is necessary that the school be brought to them. 3d. As it is not always expedient to have graded courses, it is necessary to bring the course of study within reach of those of even ery limited education, yet have it include all that may be essential for the interest of advanced students. 4th. In order that the theories and practice of electricity may be taught together, it is necessary to employ actual working apparatus for the purposes of demonstration at all stages of the work. The lessons of the school were prepared to meet these conditions, by Prof. Dugald C. Jackson, with the assistance and suggestions of other workers of the faculty of the school. The course of lessons has now been thoroughly revised and many additions have been made where the advances of the science of electricity' and its application have made it desirable, and some alterations suggested by the experi ence of the instructors of the school, have been incorporated. As a large new edition of the lessons is now being issued, and a consider able demand for complete sets of the lessons bound in permanent form has arisen among the members of the classes of the school, this volume is issued in response to this demand. The volume contains the lessons of the general course of the school as they are used in the instruction of the classes. Book Senior Magnetism and Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Senior Magnetism and Electricity Classic Reprint written by R. H. Jude and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Senior Magnetism and Electricity The object of this book is to provide a sound course of Elementary Magnetism and Electricity, suitable for use in schools and colleges, containing a lucid account of the theory illustrated by a large collection of simple and instructive experiments. Modern ideas on the nature of electricity have received full attention, so far as this is consistent with a strictly elementary treatment of the subject. Part I. deals with Magnetism, a subject which is much better fitted for easy experimental work than Electrostatics. For example, the Law of Inverse Squares, and the conception of Lines of Force are far easier to demonstrate by practical methods in Magnetism than in Electricity. In Part II. - Electrostatics - the conception of Potential is introduced very early, is illustrated practically by means of the gold-leaf electroscope, and is then made the foundation of the whole subject. Numerous diagrams of lines of force and equipotential surfaces are given, in order to impress on the student the importance of the medium surrounding the "charged" bodies. Part III. - Electrodynamics - opens with a simple treatment of the general principles, which are then treated in detail in the later chapters. The account of the theory of voltaic cells, though strictly elementary, is quite up to date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Outline of the Sciences of Heat and Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Outline of the Sciences of Heat and Electricity Classic Reprint written by Thomas Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the Sciences of Heat and Electricity The present volume may be considered as a new and enlarged edition of the first 172 pages of the first volume of my System of Chemistry. The second part, on Electricity, is published to fulfil a promise which I gave to the public many years ago. I have withheld it thus long from an unwillingness to encroach beyond what was absolutely necessary on the pecuniary resources of the students. This second part, instead of an abridgement, constitutes, in fact, an extension of my lectures on electricity. In the College of Glasgow the science of electricity belongs, not to the Professor of Chemistry, but to the Professor of Natural Philosophy. This induces me to confine my observations on it to those branches only that are most intimately connected with Chemistry. But I conceive that the connexion between Electricity and Chemistry is now so close that it is impossible to be master of the latter with out being at least acquainted with the principles of the former.
