Book School Counselors Perceptions of Internationally Adopted Children

Download or read book School Counselors Perceptions of Internationally Adopted Children written by Alison Bowe and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States (U.S.) adopts more international children than any other country (Kreider & Cohen, 2009). Because international adoption is so popular among U.S. citizens, school counselors will more than likely interact with at least one internationally adopted student throughout their professional practice. However, there is limited research on school counselors' perceptions about this population. Greater understanding of school counselors' perceptions is needed so that they may support these children's academic, personal/social, and career development. The purpose of this study was to determine American school counselors' perceptions of internationally adopted children. Ninety-two American K-12 school counselors participated in an online survey, and results were gathered during the spring semester of 2011.

Download or read book Developing a Foundation for Learning with Internationally Adopted Children written by Boris Gindis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-14 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practice-focused guide introduces The SmartStart Toolbox as a remedial program to help mental health professionals and adoptive parents promote the educational and social development of internationally adopted children aged 4–8. Recognizing the cultural, emotional, and cognitive needs of children who have experienced a fundamental change in their social situation of development following international adoption, The SmartStart Toolbox provides a range of family-based remedial activities which stimulate children’s thinking and learning while creating scaffolded attachment opportunities during early interactions with their adoptive families. The volume details the notions of "psychological tools" (Vygotsky) and "mediated learning experience" (Feuerstein) which form the theoretical foundations for The SmartStart Toolbox and offers step-by-step guidance on conducting activities and adapting them to the individual child. The SmartStart methodology can also be used by professionals for diagnostic purposes. This text will benefit researchers in child psychology, as well as clinicians, family therapists, social workers, and educators with an interest in child development, cognitive and language enhancement, and adoption and fostering more broadly. Adoptive parents will also benefit from this book and its focus on themes of attachment, parenting, and the development of social cognition.

Book Building Transnational Families Adoptive Parents Perceptions of the International Adoption Experience

Download or read book Building Transnational Families Adoptive Parents Perceptions of the International Adoption Experience written by Bethany Willis Hepp and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of international adoption is a relatively new and still expanding method of family formation. Globally, it involves more than one hundred countries and the movement of hundreds of thousands of children across international boundaries. In the United States alone the number of children adopted internationally now exceeds more than 20,000 annually. This study explores how newly adopting parents perceive the international adoption process. Data for this study was collected through the use of face-to-face interviews with parents who had adopted internationally. It provides detailed information about the confluence of factors that parents experience as they negotiate the adoption process. Included in parent perceptions of the international adoption process is how they conceptualize well-being and what is important for raising a child adopted internationally. This study also explores the life course factors that influence those perceptions of their experience.

Book International and Transracial Adoptions

Download or read book International and Transracial Adoptions written by Christopher Bagley and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text begins with an overview of factors which contribute to adjustment in adoption, including the role problems of adoptive parents, adoptions by step-parents, and neglect and abuse of children prior to adoption. Data from the British national child development study analyzed in this book indicate that adoption is a powerful environmental influence on children who without adoption would be at considerable risk for the development of major behavioural problems, delinquency, and mental illness. Several chapters on inter-country adoption highlight the policy dilemmas in this area, and the slow progress towards comprehensive, international agreements to protect the needs of inter-country adopted children. Two follow-up studies are reported of Chinese and Vietnamese children (now young adults) adopted by British parents in the 1960s and 1970s. The excellent outcomes for these children indicate that despite early trauma and neglect prior to adoption, the mental health of these adoptees is as good as mental health profiles in within-country adoptions.

Book Parent Satisfaction with School Services for Their Internationally Adopted Child

Download or read book Parent Satisfaction with School Services for Their Internationally Adopted Child written by Kaitlyn Cariss and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International adoption continues to be a popular method of growing a family in the United States. The effects of institutionalization prior to adoption can be seen across developmental areas including cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically. Although much research has been conducted on the effects of institutionalization, abandonment, and neglect on a child's development, less time has been given to the quality of services a family can receive after the adoption has been finalized and the family begins their new life together. One significant resource for these families is the school system. The purpose of this study was to explore the variety of services a family receives through their child's educational setting as well as parent's satisfaction with these services. It was hypothesized parents of internationally adopted children are not completely satisfied with the services received in their child's educational settings due to non-expertise regarding adoption-specific issues. It was also hypothesized that there are significant differences in services offered between school settings, with the most services offered in public schools but the highest satisfaction of services found in private schools. This study surveyed 67 parents from 28 states regarding their internationally adopted child and the experiences they have had with their school. The analysis found that there was not a significant difference in services offered or satisfaction with those services among types of school, with the exception of behavioral services.

Book International Adoption in the U S

Download or read book International Adoption in the U S written by Jeff Drayton Wolfgang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to present a review of literature on internationally adopted children in the U.S. that provides context, references for normal development, and describes traumatic stress with children. This gives counselors and other professionals who work with young children and families of international adoption a conceptual framework to understand experiences that may need to be mediated and normalized. The literature suggests that by developing sensitive and responsive social-emotional relationships with infants and young children, caregivers can foster resiliency. It is important to have an accurate reference for developmental effects with internationally adopted children so that we can aid these families as they deal with the complexity of adoption.

Book Introduction to Counseling

Download or read book Introduction to Counseling written by Michael Scott Nystul and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Counseling by Michael Scott Nystul provides an overview of counseling and the helping professions from the perspective of art and science—the science of counseling that generates a knowledge base proven to promote competency and efficacy in the practitioner, and the art of using this knowledge base to build skills that can be applied sensitively to clients in a multicultural society. The Fifth Edition has been organized into three sections: (1) an overview of counseling and the counseling process, (2) multicultural counseling and counseling theories, and (3) special approaches and settings. It continues to address key topics and issues, including gender, culture, and sexual orientation, and offers ways to integrate multiculturalism into all aspects of counseling, rather than view it as a separate entity. Highlighting emerging trends and changes in ethical codes, as well as reflecting the latest updates to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5), the book successfully illustrates the importance of art and science to modern-day counseling.
