Book Teaching Aboriginal Studies

Download or read book Teaching Aboriginal Studies written by Rhonda Craven and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Aboriginal Studies has been a practical guide for classroom teachers in primary and secondary schools, as well as student teachers, across Australia. Chapters on Aboriginal history and culture, stereotypes and racism, government policies and reconciliation provide essential knowledge for integrating Aboriginal history and culture, issues and perspectives across the curriculum. This second edition of Teaching Aboriginal Studies encompasses developments over the past decade in Aboriginal affairs, Aboriginal education and research. It features a wide range of valuable teaching sources including poetry, images, oral histories, media, and government reports. There are also strategies for teaching Aboriginal Studies in different contexts and the latest research findings. The text is lavishly illustrated with photographs, posters, paintings, prints, ads and cartoons. Teaching Aboriginal Studies is the product of consultation and collaboration across Australia. Remarkable educators and achievers, both Aboriginal and other Australians, tell what teachers need to know and do to help Aboriginal students reach their potential, educate all students about Aboriginal Australia and make this country all that we can be. 'The importance of this book cannot be overestimated. We have been insisting for years that pre-service teachers be required to learn about Aboriginal history, culture and identity, and that it be regarded as integral to qualifying for their education degrees.' Lionel Bamblett, General Manager, Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc.

Book Review of the IAS Funded Secondary School Scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students

Download or read book Review of the IAS Funded Secondary School Scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Price waterhouse Coopers Indigenous Consulting (PIC) was appointed in February 2017 by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (the department) to undertake a review of Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS) funded secondary school scholarships. Attainment of higher levels of education is directly associated with improved health outcomes, socio-economic status and prosperity. Completion of Year 12 or its equivalent provides an important step along the path to economic participation and access to further training or education opportunity. However, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studentsâ school completion rates fall well below the rates of their non-Indigenous counterparts. The IASâ three core priority areas of getting children to school, adults into work and building safe communities are supported by five programme streams one of which is the Children and Schooling Programme. Under this programme the IAS funds ten scholarship providers to provide secondary school scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. A smaller number of tertiary scholarships are also delivered by some scholarship providers. [Executive summary, ed]

Book Khot La Cha

Download or read book Khot La Cha written by Simon Baker and published by Douglas & McIntyre Limited. This book was released on 1994 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Raised primarily on the Capilano Reserve in North Vancouver, Simon Baker was the grandson of Joe Capilano. Born on January 15, 1910, he attended St. George's Residential School in Lytton [schools]. Baker worked primarily as a longshoreman in Vancouver from 1935 to 1976, rising to the position of superintendent of Canadian Stevedoring. Simon Baker's life is recalled in Khot La Cha: An Autobiography of Chief Simon Baker (1994), written with Verna Kirkness. With an Aboriginal name meaning Man with a Kind Heart, Baker served as a councillor to the Squamish Nation for more than 30 years, ten years as its chairman, and became the only Squamish member to be designated Chief for Lifetime. He twice received the British Columbia Centennial Award of Merit, in 1958 and 1971, and became an international cultural ambassador in the 1970s and 1980s. As a fundraiser and teacher, Baker played an important role in the First Nations House of Learning at the University of British Columbia where he received an Honorary Doctorate of Law in 1990. Ten years later he accepted the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Heritage and Spirituality. Baker was invested in the Order of Canada in 1997. As a patriarch for nine children and 38 grandchildren, Simon Baker died on May 23, 2001. In the periodical First Nations Drum, Baker was later referred to as "the last of the great North Shore Indians.", a reference to a remarkable North Vancouver lacrosse team in the 1930s. Known as Cannonball Baker during his playing days, Baker was inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 1999."-- ://www.abcbookworld.com/view_author.php?id=7152.

Book Rurality Diversity and Schooling

Download or read book Rurality Diversity and Schooling written by Neroli Colvin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration and refugee settlement policies have brought significant demographic changes to some regional centres over the past two decades and this book focuses on one such centre, a mid-size town in New South Wales. Historically, social relations in rural settlements have been enacted primarily within a "white/black" (Anglo/Indigenous) binary but in recent years this town has become home to several hundred refugees from Africa, South-East Asia and the Middle East. Using interview, observational and documentary data, the book examines how multiculturalism is understood, valued and lived in the town's two public high schools. Schools are key sites for everyday interactions between people from diverse ethnic, cultural, language and religious backgrounds. Drawing on critical theories of discourse, space and race, the book examines a host of anxieties in the town and its schools about recent demographic changes revealing how notions of rurality, steeped in colonial narratives about European settlement, productivity and racial superiority, continue to shape how “difference” is perceived and experienced in regional communities.
