Book Preconception and Preimplantation Diagnosis of Human Genetic Disease

Download or read book Preconception and Preimplantation Diagnosis of Human Genetic Disease written by Robert G. Edwards and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1993-04-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of human in vitro fertilization and developments in molecular science have made it possible to diagnose genetic disease in fetuses at a very early stage of development. This book presents the most recent advances and developments in this new area of applied research. Experts in the field describe and discuss the latest technology, from micromanipulation of single cells to sophisticated methods of DNA analysis. The book considers the implications of this new technology for fetal screening and the prevention of genetic disease, as well as for the control and manipulation of the normal sex ratio. It draws together current knowledge and discusses the new clinical opportunities for disease prevention. The book begins with an overview of the genetics of some common inherited diseases and the historical development of prenatal screening. It then draws together the most recent advances in preimplantation diagnostic techniques, including tissue assays for specific genetic disorders, and methods for typing and separating spermatozoa. The practical aspects of the new methodologies are considered, along with the potential for developing safer, more reliable and less invasive methods of diagnosis. The ethical and legal implications of this diagnostic approach are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is two years since a general meeting of the Gesellschaft fur Biologische Chemie first requested us to organize the 21 st Mosbach Colloquium on mammalian reproduction, and one year since we received final authorization to do so. The present volume contains the papers read at the Colloquium, but the discussions have been omitted because writing and proof reading them would have delayed the appearance of this volume for an unjustifiable long time. Besides, in most cases the discussion was of a relatively specific nature and we did not consider it essential, bearing in mind that the purpose of the Mosbach Col loquia is to provide advanced further education for the non specialist. One of us has referred to this and to the topical structure of the 21 st Colloquium in the introductory and final remarks. Helpful suggestions for organizing the program were made by some of the invited speakers, but the first important impulses VON BERSWORDT-WALLRABE, Dr. ELGER, Dr. came from Dr. GERHARDS, Dr. NEUMANN, and Dr. UFER to whom we here wish express our thanks. Thanks are also due to those whose donations, some of which were very generous, made it financially possible to organize the Colloquium. Book Trophoblast Invasion and Endometrial Receptivity

Download or read book Trophoblast Invasion and Endometrial Receptivity written by H.W. Denker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in mechanisms of embryo implantation is increasing, particularly with the realization that failure of implantation after in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer places significant limits on the success of treatment. In addition, there is a need to provide hypotheses, and ultimately mechanisms, for the high rates of embryonic loss in women in the population at large. Traditionally, implantation research has concentrated on genetics and endocrinology without providing many therapeutic benefits. A new era is now beginning with the application of modem cellular and molecular approaches to the investigation of the relationship between trophoblast and endometrium. At the same time, older data can be reevaluated in the light of current research into cell cell and cell-matrix interactions. The feeling that new avenues of research are open was apparent when an international group of scientists came together at a workshop on "The Cell Biology of Trophoblast Invasion In Vivo and In Vitro" held during the XXIV Annual Meeting of the Cell, Tissue and Organ Culture Study Group (C.T.O.C.) at Heidelberg in 1986. What was unusual about this Conference was the interdisciplinary dialogue between implantation researchers and tumor biologists, highlighting aspects common to invasion of trophoblast and tumor cells.

Book Preimplantation Embryo Development

Download or read book Preimplantation Embryo Development written by Barry D. Bavister and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Serono Symposium on Pre implantation Embryo Development, held in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1991. The idea for the symposium grew out of the 1989 Serono Symposium on Fertilization in Mammals* at which preimplantation development was the predominant suggestion for a follow-up topic. This was indeed a timely subject in view of the recent resurgence of interest in this funda mental phase of embryogenesis and its relevance to basic research and applied fertility studies in humans, food-producing animals, and endangered species. The symposium brought together speakers from a broad range of disciplines in order to focus on key regulatory mechanisms in embryo development, using a wide variety of animal models, and on representative topics in human preimplantation embryogenesis. The culmination of preimplantation development is a blastocyst con taining the first differentiated embryonic tissues and capable of initiating and sustaining pregnancy. The central objective of the symposium was to throw light on the regulation of cellular and molecular events underlying blastocyst formation. It was particularly appropriate that the date of the symposium marked the 20th anniversary of the publication of the classic volume Biology of the Blastocyst, the proceedings of an international workshop held in 1970. This book, which summarized most of the information then available on this topic in mammals, was edited by the pioneer in blastocyst research, Dr. Richard B1andau, who was the guest speaker at the symposium.
