Book excerpt: In 1991, the development of a spatial forest data base over most of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region was commissioned to provide the thematic basis for studies conducted for the forest fragmentation and biodiversity project under the forest landscape ecology program. The data base included a range of forest and vegetation cover classes, with the red pine and white pine stands restricted to those over 50 years of age. A method combining remote sensing and geographic information system technology was used for the project. This report describes the northern and southern sectors of the Eastern Ontario segment.

Book A Comparison of Small Mammal Communities in Old Pine Forests and Other Common Forest Types in Sault Ste Marie District

Download or read book A Comparison of Small Mammal Communities in Old Pine Forests and Other Common Forest Types in Sault Ste Marie District written by Scott L. Jones and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1993 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description of the small mammal communities inhabiting old pine forests and the other forest types common in Schembri, Way-White, and Wlasy Townships in the Territorial District of Algoma, about 100 km east of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The study identified whether old pine forests represented unique habitats for small mammals, and predicted the impact of timber harvest on small mammal communities. Small mammals were collected using Victor mouse traps in cut and uncut stands of old growth white pine, hard maple, boreal mixedwood, and black spruce.

Book Development of a Spatial Forest Data Base for the Eastern Boreal Forest Region of Ontario

Download or read book Development of a Spatial Forest Data Base for the Eastern Boreal Forest Region of Ontario written by Ontario. Ministry of Natural Resources and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1994 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, a spatial forest database over large regions of Ontario was initiated as the basis for research into forest fragmentation and biodiversity using data generated from the digital analysis of LANDSAT thematic mapper satellite data integrated into a geographic information system (GIS). The project was later extended into the the eastern segment of the Boreal forest system. This report describes preparation of the spatial forest data base over the eastern Boreal Forest Region that extends from the northern boundary of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest Region and the southern margin of the James Bay Lowland, between the Ontario-Quebec border and a point west of Michipicoten on Lake Superior. The report describes the methodology used to produce the data base and results, including mapping of water, dense and sparse conifer forest, mixed forest, dense and sparse deciduous forest, poorly vegetated areas, recent cutovers of less than 10 years, old cutovers and burns, recent burns of less than 10 years, wetlands, bedrock outcrops, agriculture, built-up areas, and mine tailings.

Book A Computer Program for Landscape Diversity Analysis

Download or read book A Computer Program for Landscape Diversity Analysis written by Ajith H. Perera and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 1993 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape diversity analysis (LDA) measures variety in landscape composition, which is one indicator of biodiversity. This manual describes the LDA software package, an interactive, menu-driven program that examines composition of forest landscapes and estimates diversity at the landscape scale. LDA consists of four modules for defining a landscape unit such as ecodistrict or watershed, defining landscape elements such as land cover types or forest stands, examining landscape composition, and estimating landscape diversity. The manual provides a basic introduction to the concept of diversity as well as step-by-step instructions for installing the software and using each module, including creating files, defining elements, managing files, comparing landscape units, accessing modules, and graphic displays. The appendices include a guide to general features and functions of the software and sample data set.

Book Old Growth in a New World

Download or read book Old Growth in a New World written by Thomas A. Spies and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old-growth forests represent a lofty ideal as much as an ecosystem—an icon of unspoiled nature, ecological stability, and pristine habitat. These iconic notions have actively altered the way society relates to old-growth forests, catalyzing major changes in policy and management. But how appropriate are those changes and how well do they really serve in reaching conservation goals? Old Growth in a New World untangles the complexities of the old growth concept and the parallel complexity of old-growth policy and management. It brings together more than two dozen contributors—ecologists, economists, sociologists, managers, historians, silviculturists, environmentalists, timber producers, and philosophers—to offer a broad suite of perspectives on changes that have occurred in the valuing and management of old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest over the past thirty years. The book • introduces the issues and history of old-growth values and conservation in the Pacific Northwest; • explores old growth through the ideas of leading ecologists and social scientists; • addresses the implications for the future management of old-growth forests and considers how evolving science and social knowledge might be used to increase conservation effectiveness. By confronting the complexity of the old-growth concept and associated policy and management challenges, Old Growth in a New World encourages productive discussion on the future of old growth in the Pacific Northwest and offers options for more effective approaches to conserving forest biodiversity.
