Book The Horace s Villa Project 1997 2003 The reports

Download or read book The Horace s Villa Project 1997 2003 The reports written by Bernard Frischer and published by British Archaeological Reports (Oxford) Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Horace's Villa" is the name given to the site of a Roman country house near the hill town of 'Licenza' (Roma), which is located approximately 30 miles from the centre of Rome. The site remains in quotation marks as, although the identification is traditional and possible, it is by no means certain. The "Horace's Villa" Project, 1997-2003 was initiated with the main goal of adding to the knowledge of the site in terms of time and space. There were two main areas to be investigated, which could be called the 'meta-archaeological' and the 'archaeological'. The former entailed looking afresh at earlier investigations, while the latter offered opportunities to look at new discoveries, such as the baths, entrance, and the rural hinterland. This volume is part of a two volume set: ISBN 9781407300023 (Volume I); ISBN 9781407300030 (Volume II); ISBN 9781407300016 (Volume set). This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Aspects of Roman Pottery in Canton Ticino Switzerland

Download or read book Aspects of Roman Pottery in Canton Ticino Switzerland written by Christiane M. A. De Micheli Schulthess and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2003 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swiss Canton Ticino had at its heart the Roman town of Cosmo and Lake Maggiore, the shores of which were lined by a succession of Roman settlements and rich cemeteries. This examination of Roman coarse and thin-walled pottery from the Canton is based on detailed analyses of assemblages which were largely recovered from datable graves. The aim of the study is to provide a comprehensive typology of vessel forms covering the 1st to 4th centuries AD with emphasis on the 1st and 2nd centuries. An initial discussion places the vessels within their geographical and archaeological contexts, finding cultural links with the Po region of Italy. Includes an illustrated catalogue of vessels and graves.

Book Ceramics Cuisine and Culture

Download or read book Ceramics Cuisine and Culture written by Michela Spataro and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 23 papers presented here are the product of the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and approaches to the study of kitchen pottery between archaeologists, material scientists, historians and ethnoarchaeologists. They aim to set a vital but long-neglected category of evidence in its wider social, political and economic contexts. Structured around main themes concerning technical aspects of pottery production; cooking as socioeconomic practice; and changing tastes, culinary identities and cross-cultural encounters, a range of social economic and technological models are discussed on the basis of insights gained from the study of kitchen pottery production, use and evolution. Much discussion and work in the last decade has focussed on technical and social aspects of coarse ware and in particular kitchen ware. The chapters in this volume contribute to this debate, moving kitchen pottery beyond the Binfordian ‘technomic’ category and embracing a wider view, linking processualism, ceramic-ecology, behavioral schools, and ethnoarchaeology to research on historical developments and cultural transformations covering a broad geographical area of the Mediterranean region and spanning a long chronological sequence.

Book excerpt: "Lepcis Magna", one of the greatest of the Roman cities of North Africa and one of the most famous archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, was situated in the region of Tripolitania. Birthplace of the Emperor Septimius Severus, the city has yielded many well-preserved monuments from its Roman past. Mattingly presents valuable information on the pre-Roman tribal background, the urban centres, the military frontier and the regional economy. He reinterprets many aspects of the settlement history of this marginal arid zone that was once made prosperous, and considers the wider themes of Romanization, frontier military strategy, and economic links between provinces and sources of elite wealth.
