Book Scattering Scanning Near Field Optical Microscopy on Anisotropic Dielectrics

Download or read book Scattering Scanning Near Field Optical Microscopy on Anisotropic Dielectrics written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near-field optical microscopy allows the nondestructive examination of surfaces with a spatial resolution far below the diffraction limit of Abbe. In fact, the resolution of this kind of microscope is not at all dependent on the wavelength, but is typically in the range of 10 to 100 nanometers. On this scale, many materials are anisotropic, even though they might appear isotropic on the macroscopic length scale. In the present work, the previously never studied interaction between a scattering-type near-field probe and an anisotropic sample is examined theoretically as well as experimentally. In the theoretical part of the work, the analytical dipole model, which is well known for isotropic samples, is extended to anisotropic samples. On isotropic samples one observes an optical contrast between different materials, whereas on anisotropic samples one expects an additional contrast between areas with different orientations of the same dielectric tensor. The calculations show that this anisotropy contrast is strong enough to be observed if the sample is excited close to a polariton resonance. The experimental setup allows the optical examination in the visible and in the infrared wavelength regimes. For the latter, a free-electron laser was used as a precisely tunable light source for resonant excitation. The basic atomic force microscope provides a unique combination of different scanning probe microscopy methods that are indispensable in order to avoid artifacts in the measurement of the near-field signal and the resulting anisotropy contrast. Basic studies of the anisotropy contrast were performed on the ferroelectric single crystals barium titanate and lithium niobate. On lithium niobate, we examined the spectral dependence of the near-field signal close to the phonon resonance of the sample as well as its dependence on the tip-sample distance, the polarization of the incident light, and the orientation of the sample. On barium titanate, analogous measurements wer.

Book Particle Trapped Near Field Scanning Optical Microscopy Scattering and Depolarization

Download or read book Particle Trapped Near Field Scanning Optical Microscopy Scattering and Depolarization written by Min Gu and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle-trapped near-field scanning optical microscopy utilises a laser-trapped dielectric or metallic particle as a near-field scatterer to probe the high spatial frequency information from a sample. Scattering and depolarization by a trapped particle in an evanescent wave are two important issues in such an imaging system. These two issues are addressed in this paper. The strength of scattered evanescent waves was measured for particles of different sizes (0.1 micronmeter to 2 micronmeter in diameter) and different materials (polystyrene gold and silver). It has been found that the signal strength of scattered evanescent waves increases appreciably with the size of a particle. As a result, image contrast is improved significantly with laser-trapped metallic particles of large size. It has also been found that the depolarization of scattered evanescent waves under 5 polarised illumination is stronger than that under a polarized beam illumination, and that image contrast of the evanescent wave interference pattern can be improved by a factor of 3 with a parallel analyser under 5 polarized beam illumination. This result suggests that less depolarized scattered evanescent photons carry more information of an object and should be utilised for the imaging in particle-trapped near-field scanning optical microscopy.

Book Atomic Force Microscopy Scanning Nearfield Optical Microscopy and Nanoscratching

Download or read book Atomic Force Microscopy Scanning Nearfield Optical Microscopy and Nanoscratching written by Gerd Kaupp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-10-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a clear distinction is made between nano- and micro-mechanical testing for physical reasons, this monograph describes the basics and applications of the supermicroscopies AFM and SNOM, and of the nanomechanical testing on rough and technical natural surfaces in the submicron range down to a lateral resolution of a few nm. New or improved instrumentation, new physical laws and unforeseen new applications in all branches of natural sciences (around physics, chemistry, mineralogy, materials science, biology and medicine) and nanotechnology are covered as well as the sources for pitfalls and errors. It outlines the handling of natural and technical samples in relation to those of flat standard samples and emphasizes new special features. Pitfalls and sources of errors are clearly demonstrated as well as their efficient remedy when going from molecularly flat to rough surfaces. The academic or industrial scientist learns how to apply the principles for tackling their scientific or manufacturing tasks that include roughness far away from standard samples.

Book Near Field Optics and Nanoscopy

Download or read book Near Field Optics and Nanoscopy written by J. P. Fillard and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the most recent information on optical nanoscopy. Far-Field and Near-Field properties on e.m. waves are presented which illustrate how optical images can be obtained from sub-micron objects. Scanning Probe techniques and computer processing are covered here. An explanation is given on how propagating photons or evanescent waves can behave over distances shorter than the wavelength, taking into account the presence of small objects. Quantum tunneling of photons is explained comparatively with the electron mechanism. Technical details are given on photon tunneling microscopes. Typical results already obtained with these techniques are also described.

Book Introduction to THz Wave Photonics

Download or read book Introduction to THz Wave Photonics written by Xi-Cheng Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz) radiation, which is electromagnetic radiation in a frequency int- val from 0.3 to 10 THz (1 mm–30 ?m wavelength), is the next frontier in science and technology. This band occupies a large portion of the electromagnetic sp- trum between the infrared and microwave bands. Basic research, new initiatives, and developments in advanced sensing and imaging technology with regard to the THz band remain unexplored compared to the relatively well-developed science and technology in the microwave and optical frequencies. Historically, THz technologies were used mainly within the astronomy c- munity for studying the background of cosmic far-infrared radiation, and by the laser-fusion community for the diagnostics of plasmas. Since the ?rst demonstration of THz wave time-domain spectroscopy in the late 1980s, there has been a series of signi?cant advances (particularly in recent years) as more intense THz sources and higher sensitivity detectors provide new opportunities for understanding the basic science in the THz frequency range.

Book Characterisation of metallic particle distributions by scanning near field optical microscopy SNOM in simultaneous reflection and transmission mode

Download or read book Characterisation of metallic particle distributions by scanning near field optical microscopy SNOM in simultaneous reflection and transmission mode written by Steven Kämmer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Physics - Optics, grade: 1,3, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: Unlike conventional optics, scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) overcomes the Rayleigh criterion and can therefore achieve better resolutions than conventional optical microscopes. This feature is utilized to measure the optical properties of different silver particle distributions on a glass surface. This paper mainly lays focus on intensity correction of the optical data due to topographical artifacts, analysis of plasmonic behavior and a tentative representation of the optical data. The simple approach for optical artifact correction has been shown to yield qualitative success, with necessity of improvement for quantitative results. Given the conditions of the experiment, it has also been observed that plasmonic coupling seems to have a greater impact on the small observed particles. The tentative representation of the optics suggests that the larger particles are able to emit light by absorption of electromagnetic energy from their surrounding.
