Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 40 years after his debut and nearly a decade since his last appearance, one of the most renowned characters in all of crime fiction is back on the case. Well past retirement age and feeling his years-but still staying sober one day at a time-Matthew Scudder learns that alcoholics aren't the only ones who count the days since their last slip. Matt's longtime partner, Elaine, tells him of a group of former sex workers who do something similar, helping each other stay out of the life. But when one young woman describes an abusive client who's refusing to let her quit, Elaine encourages her to get help of a different sort. The sort only Scudder can deliver. A Time to Scatter Stones offers not just a gripping crime story but also a richly drawn portrait of Block's most famous character as he grapples with his own mortality while proving to the younger generation that he's still got what it takes. For Scudder's millions of fans around the world (including the many who met the character through Liam Neeson's portrayal in the film version of A Walk Among the Tombstones), A Time to Scatter Stones is an unexpected gift-a valedictory appearance that will remind readers why Scudder is simply the best there is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arashiyama group of Japanese macaques holds a distinguished place in primatology as one of the longest continuously studied non-human primate populations in the world. The resulting long-term data provide a unique resource for researchers, allowing them to move beyond cross-sectional studies to tackle larger issues involving individual, matrilineal and group histories. This book presents an overview of the scope and magnitude of research topics and management efforts that have been conducted on this population for several decades, covering not only the original troop living around Kyoto, Japan, but also the two subgroups that were translocated to Texas, USA and Montreal, Canada. The chapters encompass topics including life history, sexual, social and cultural behaviour and ecology, giving an insight into the range of current primatological research. The contributors underscore the historic value of the Arashiyama macaques and showcase new and significant research findings that highlight their continuing importance to primatology.

Book excerpt: The excavations of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at Marsa Matruh on Bates's Island, which is located on the seacoast at the north of Egypt's western desert, uncovered a small site with a metalworking workshop and nearby houses. The pottery found in the excavations indicates that this small Late Bronze Age settlement had links to several cultures: Cyprus, the Aegean, Egypt, the coast of western Asia, and the local Marmarican people. The results of the excavations are published in two volumes. This volume provides an overview of the excavations at the site, the Late Bronze Age and historical period occupations, and an introduction to the environmental morphology and history of the island.

Download or read book Loudoun Heights written by Susan E. Winter and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Loudoun Heights Cultural Resources Inventory documented the remains of historic sites on Loudoun Heights, the northern-most extension of the Blue Ridge located in Loudoun County, Virginia, and Jefferson County, West Virginia. This wooded and steep-sloped tract overlooks the town of Harpers Ferry from the south bank of the Shenandoah River, with 482 acres lying within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and 378 acres within the boundary of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. This project involved both archeological and historical research. Archeological fieldwork commenced in March 1988, and concluded in November 1988. Research revealed the cultural history of Loudoun Heights divided into three periods, characterized by industrial, military, and domestic uses. ... The archeological survey delineated eight Civil War campground areas. These campgrounds, likely occupied in 1862 by Federal troops for a total of five weeks, represent some of the best preserved Civil War encampments within the National Park System. This survey also documented six nineteenth-century domestic sites, which included a hotel complex and a substantial mountain spring developed by a brewery and bottling works in lower town Harpers Ferry."--Abstract, page xi.
