The origins of the New Italian Epic, as it has been coined by some of its proponents, can be found in the widespread backlash against the Mafia-sponsored murders of Sicilian magistrates which culminated with the assassinations of Judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992. Though beginning in the Italian language, this prolific, popular movement has more recently found its way into the English language and hence it has found a much wider international audience. Following a brief, yet detailed, history of the cultural and economic development of Sicily, this book provides a multilayered look into the evolution of the New Italian Epic genre. The works of ten prominent contemporary writers, including Andrea Camilleri, Michael Dibdin, Elena Ferrante, and Massimo Carlotto, are examined against the backdrop of various historical periods. This "past is prologue" approach to contemporary crime fiction provides context for the creation of these recent novels and enhances understanding of the complex moral ambiguity that is characteristic of anti-mafia Italian crime fiction.

Theatre and performance occurs in time and space and exists between the audience and performer as a communicative event. This local world of experience and human interactivity is not easily subsumed by global networks or commercial systems and remains a potent force of expression and, at times, resistance. The volume offers a range of critical viewpoints from which to evaluate the interrelationality of the local and the global, such as philosophical cosmopolitanism, post-colonialism, feminism, class, ethnicity, gender and the experience of the diasporic or exilic artist. The anthology concludes with a reflection between Janelle Reinelt and Marvin Carlson upon the ideas put forth in the book and the broader connectivities of the local and the global. Reinelt and Carlson reveal that these concepts should not be regarded in opposition but, rather, as entangled, something which is reflected in this volume as a whole. A number of international productions and performance practices are discussed from diverse geographical and cultural perspectives, illuminating the complexity of the local and the global. Since formerly convicted people live in all of our communities, should we allow employers to continue to unreasonably discriminate on this large group of our citizenry "forever", consequently, forcing them in a desperate situation in which they may be forced back into criminal behavior, or should there be a time limit on how long employers can request the information, thus, protecting the whole communities interest in the matter? There should be reasonable restrictions placed on how long employers can use criminal background information as a reasonable indicator of a persons character. This book will address these questions in depth, and will offer many reasonable suggestions on how to remedy this problem.
