Book Scandinavian Students on an American Campus

Download or read book Scandinavian Students on an American Campus written by William H. Sewell and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scandinavian Students on an American Campus was first published in 1961.Forty students from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden who were enrolled at the University of Wisconsin during a two-year period are mirrored in this book. The study is the sixth in a series of monographs resulting from a research program of the Committee on Cross-Cultural Education of the Social Science Research Council. The group studied included twenty-two students from Norway, eight from Sweden, and ten from Denmark, one of the largest concentrations of Scandinavian students on any American campus. The principal data came from a series of intensive personal interviews with each student at intervals during his or her visit. Many excerpts from the interviews, candid and revealing, are included in this book. Additional information about the students was acquired through teachers' and advisors' ratings and comments and through participant observation. The major aims of the study were to obtain information about the academic and social adjustment of the students, to learn something of their impressions of the United States and how these impressions changed during their stay in this country, to examine the relationship of social, economic, and intellectual factors in the students' backgrounds to their attitudes and success in their sojourns, to discover leads for further study, and to make suggestions for the guidance of student exchange. These aims are pursued by both descriptive and quantitative analysis of the vast amount of data collected. A number of practical implications of interest to persons concerned with foreign student exchange and welfare are included.

Book The Social Psychology of Intergroup Conflict

Download or read book The Social Psychology of Intergroup Conflict written by Wolfgang Stroebe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of intergroup relations and social conflict has once again become a major focus of social psychological theorizing and research. One of the consequences of this advance in knowledge is that social psychologists have increasingly been called upon to apply their ideas in order to advise on existing conflicts. The significant contribution of this book is the way it builds on the research and theory of intergroup conflict and then applies this knowledge to the field. The areas discussed include industrial conflicts, interethnic conflicts and intergroup conflicts. The chapters range from reports of experimental laboratory research, through field studies, to theoretical-conceptual contributions. The new advances offered by this broad spectrum of topics will be of interest not only to social psychologists, but also to sociologists and political scientists.

Book Swedish American Borderlands

Download or read book Swedish American Borderlands written by Dag Blanck and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reframing Swedish–American relations by focusing on contacts, crossings, and convergences beyond migration Studies of Swedish American history and identity have largely been confined to separate disciplines, such as history, literature, or politics. In Swedish–American Borderlands, this collection edited by Dag Blanck and Adam Hjorthén seeks to reconceptualize and redefine the field of Swedish–American relations by reviewing more complex cultural, social, and economic exchanges and interactions that take a broader approach to the international relationship—ultimately offering an alternative way of studying the history of transatlantic relations. Swedish–American Borderlands studies connections and contacts between Sweden and the United States from the seventeenth century to today, exploring how movements of people have informed the circulation of knowledge and ideas between the two countries. The volume brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences to investigate multiple transcultural exchanges between Sweden and the United States. Rather than concentrating on one-way processes or specific national contexts, Swedish–American Borderlands adopts the concept of borderlands to examine contacts, crossings, and convergences between the nations, featuring specific case studies of topics like jazz, architecture, design, genealogy, and more. By placing interactions, entanglements, and cross-border relations at the center of the analysis, Swedish–American Borderlands seeks to bridge disciplinary divides, joining a diverse set of scholars and scholarship in writing an innovative history of Swedish–American relations to produce new understandings of what we perceive as Swedish, American, and Swedish American. Book Medievalist Comics and the American Century

Download or read book Medievalist Comics and the American Century written by Chris Bishop and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comic book has become an essential icon of the American Century, an era defined by optimism in the face of change and by recognition of the intrinsic value of democracy and modernization. For many, the Middle Ages stand as an antithesis to these ideals, and yet medievalist comics have emerged and endured, even thrived alongside their superhero counterparts. Chris Bishop presents a reception history of medievalist comics, setting them against a greater backdrop of modern American history. From its genesis in the 1930s to the present, Bishop surveys the medievalist comic, its stories, characters, settings, and themes drawn from the European Middle Ages. Hal Foster's Prince Valiant emerged from an America at odds with monarchy, but still in love with King Arthur. Green Arrow remains the continuation of a long fascination with Robin Hood that has become as central to the American identity as it was to the British. The Mighty Thor reflects the legacy of Germanic migration into the United States. The rugged individualism of Conan the Barbarian owes more to the western cowboy than it does to the continental knight-errant. In the narrative of Red Sonja, we can trace a parallel history of feminism. Bishop regards these comics as not merely happenchance, but each success (Prince Valiant and The Mighty Thor) or failure (Beowulf: Dragon Slayer) as a result and an indicator of certain American preoccupations amid a larger cultural context. Intrinsically modernist paragons of pop-culture ephemera, American comics have ironically continued to engage with the European Middle Ages. Bishop illuminates some of the ways in which we use an imagined past to navigate the present and plots some possible futures as we valiantly shape a new century.
