Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernist Islam was a major intellectual current in the Muslim world during the 19th and 20th centuries. Proponents of this movement typically believed that it was not only possible but imperative to show how "modern" values and institutions could be reconciled with authentically Islamic ideals. This sourcebook brings together a broad range of writings on modernist Islam from across the Muslim world. It makes available for the first time in English the writings of many of the activists and intellectuals who made up the early modernist Islamic movement. Charles Kurzman and a team of section editors, each specializing in a different region of the Islamic world, have assembled, translated, and annotated the work of the most important of these figures. With the publication of this volume, an English-speaking audience will have wider access to the literature of modernist Islam than did the makers of the movement themselves.

Book excerpt: From the first Jewish revolt against Rome in the first century CE to contemporary Islamic fanaticism, faith in the hands of religious zealots has been a powerful and often catastrophic means of enacting radical change. 'Ultimate Devotion' examines a range of religious movements across history to reveal the striking similarities in the way they emerged, the characters of their leaders and followers, and their often tragic conclusions. A rich variety of archaeological materials intersect with textual evidence and anthropological theory to develop a model of mass action inspired by intense religion. In its exploration of religious rebellion in history, 'Ultimate Devotion' illuminates religious fanaticism today.

Book The Concept of the Mahdi Among Ahl Al Sunna

Download or read book The Concept of the Mahdi Among Ahl Al Sunna written by Suhaib Hasan and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahdi, "the guided one", has been popularly awaited throughout Islamic history as a just and pious leader who would be extremely successful during his reign over the Muslims. This study, based on the author's original PhD thesis written in 1991, aims to investigate the concept of the Mahdi among Ahl al-Sunna according to the methodology of the traditionists. It includes the analysis of over one hundred narrations, mostly found in the Kitab al-Fitan, by Nuʿaim b. Ḥammād (which, in 1991 was only available in manuscript form). Both Sunni and Shi'a literature throng with extensive descriptions of this Mahdi, the concept of which has prompted a great number of people to claim this title throughout the fourteen centuries of Islam, in different parts of the Muslim lands. The attack on the Grand Mosque in Mecca, led by a Mahdi claimant, during the year 1980 rekindled the debate on the authenticity of this belief. The scholars of Islam were divided on this issue: some rejected the idea completely by labelling all those Aḥādīth that speak of the Mahdi as spurious, while others supported this belief vehemently but rejected the claimant on the grounds that he did not fulfil the criterion laid down in the texts for the true Mahdi. The incident also moved the writer of these lines as well to seek the oldest Sunni source on the Mahdi. About the Author: Shaykh Dr Suhaib Hasan comes from a family of prestigious scholars. His father Shaykh AbdulGhaffar Hasan remained teacher of Hadith in the Islamic University of Medina for many years and a number of leading scholars around the world benefited from him. Shaykh Suhaib Hasan's great grandfather Shaykh AbdulJabbar Umarpuri was among the students of Shaykh Nazir Hussain Dehlwi, the leading scholar of Hadith of his era. Shaykh Suhaib Hasan himself graduated from the Islamic University of Medina and had the privilege of studying with many great scholars of his era such as Hafiz Muhammad Gondalwi, Shaykh AbdulAziz ibn Baz, Shaykh Nasirudin Albani, Shaykh Ameen Shanqiti, Shaykh Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi, Shaykh Ibrahim Shaqrah, Shaykh AbdulMuhsin Abbad and many others. The shaykh moved to East Africa after graduating and taught for a decade before resettling in Britain were he currently resides; he has recognised as a leading scholar of Markaz Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith, the founder of Masjid Tawheed in Leyton, London, and he is currently the chairman of the Sharia Council in Leyton, London.

Book The Men of Madina

    Book Details:
  • Author : Muḥammad Ibn Saʻd
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book The Men of Madina written by Muḥammad Ibn Saʻd and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the translation of Volume 7 of the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir of Ibn Sa?d which deals with the Companions, Tabi?un and the subsequent generations of the people of knowledge in Basra, Baghdad, Khurasan, Syria and Egypt. This book is of particular interest because its pages demonstrate the attitude and action of the Companions and the Tabi?un when confronted by the most dangerous of trials ? fitna, or civil war. This is extremely important in the modern age, in which fitna is commonplace, for we can learn a great deal from how the early Muslims dealt with it.

Book Encyclopedia of Canonical ad th

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Canonical ad th written by Gautier H.A. Juynboll and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedic work on Islam comprises English translations of all canonical ḥadīths, complete with their respective chains of transmission (isnāds). By conflating the variant versions of the same ḥadīth, the repetitiveness of its literature has been kept wherever possible to a minimum. The latest methods of isnād analysis, described in the general introduction, have been employed in an attempt to identify the person(s) responsible for each ḥadīth. The book is organized in the alphabetical order of those persons. These are the so-called ‘common links’. Each of them is listed with the tradition(s) for the wording of which he can be held accountable, or with which he can at least be associated. Within each article, the traditions are referred to in bold figures in the numerical order as they were distilled from the more than 19,000 isnāds listed in Tuḥfat al-ashrāf bi maʿrifat al-aṭrāf by the Syrian ḥadīth scholar Yusuf b. ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān al-Mizzī (d. 742/1341). Medieval commentaries as well as assorted biographical lexicons were drawn upon to illustrate the text of each tradition in all theological, social, legal and other noteworthy aspects discernible in it. Thus no details of eschatology, superstitions, miraculous phenomena, Jahili practices etc. were left without the clarifying comments of contemporary and later theologians, historians and ḥadīth experts culled from such works as the Fatḥ al-bārī, a major commentary of Bukhārī’s Ṣaḥīḥ by Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (d. 852/1448) or the commentary by Yaḥya b. Sharaf an-Nawawī (d. 676/1277) of the Ṣaḥīḥ of Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj. The encyclopedia concludes with an exhaustive index and glossary of names and concepts, which functions at the same time as a concordance. In short, this work presents an indispensable sourcebook of the development of Islam in all its facets during the first three centuries since its foundation as reflected in canonical ḥadīth.
