Book Sayings Proverbs and Humour of Ulster

Download or read book Sayings Proverbs and Humour of Ulster written by Sir John William Byers and published by Books Ulster. This book was released on 2014-08-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir John William Byers (1853-1920) was an eminent medical professional who had a passion for Ulster language and folklore. In the course of his distinguished career, and in his travels around the country, he collected words, expressions and superstitions of the people and studied them for origin and meaning. In 1904 he published 'Sayings, Proverbs and Humour of Ulster' which was based on the text of a lecture delivered to the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society in the previous year and on a paper contributed to the 'Northern Whig' newspaper in May 1901. His sudden and untimely death prevented the publication of a much more substantial work that had been in preparation for some years.

Book From Ulster to America

Download or read book From Ulster to America written by Michael Montgomery and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Ulster to America documents nearly four hundred terms and meanings-- each with quotations from both sides of the Atlantic--contributed to American English by these eighteenth-century settlers from Ulster. Drawing on letters they sent back to their homeland and on other archival documents associated with their settlement, it shows that Ulster emigrants and their children contributed as much to regional American English as any other group. The numerous quotations bring alive the speech of earlier days on both sides of the Atlantic, and extend understanding of the culture, mannerisms, and life of those pioneering times.

Book Shakespeare and the Ulster Dialect

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Ulster Dialect written by Sir John William Byers and published by Books Ulster. This book was released on 2014-05-31 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Shakespeare and the Ulster Dialect," which was first published in the "Northern Whig" newspaper, Belfast, 22nd April, 1916, Sir John Byers identifies Elizabethan words and phrases that came to the North of Ireland with the English planters in the seventeenth century and which were still in everyday use there at the beginning of the twentieth century. John Byers (1853-1920) was an eminent medical professional who had a passion for the study of Ulster language and folklore and had previously published "Sayings, Proverbs and Humour of Ulster" in 1904. From the introductory section of "Shakespeare and the Ulster Dialect" "Until the end of the eighteenth century there was a tradition in Ulster that pure English was spoken in Lisburn, and it was computed less than half a century ago-1878-that, while at that date a glossary of more than 2,000 words would be required to enable a modern Englishman to read his Shakespeare, probably about 200 words (one in ten) or less, would be all that an intelligent North of Ireland person would need to understand the works of the greatest of poets and dramatists."
