Postal savings in many countries also hold the largest share of individual and household savings among competing institutions. This book examines the postal financial systems of some twenty countries visited by the author, and also includes case studies by expert authors from different developing nations. Among the topics covered are savings product development, investing mobilized funds, receiving overseas remittances, and utilizing financial technology.

Book Mobilization Effects of Multilateral Development Banks

Download or read book Mobilization Effects of Multilateral Development Banks written by Chiara Broccolini and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use loan-level data on syndicated lending to a large sample of developing countries between 1993 and 2017 to estimate the mobilization effects of multilateral development banks (MDBs), controlling for a large set of fixed effects. We find evidence of positive and significant direct and indirect mobilization effects of multilateral lending on the number of deals and on the total size of bank inflows. The number of lending banks and the average maturity of syndicated loans also increase after MDB lending. These effects are present not only on impact, but they last up to three years and are not offset by a decline in bond financing. There is no evidence of anticipation effects and the results are not driven by confounding factors, such as the presence of large global banks, Chinese lending and aid flows. Finally, the economic effects are sizable, suggesting that MBDs can play a vital role to mobilize private sector financing to achieve the goals of the 2030 Development Agenda.

Book Savings Mobilization Through Social Security

Download or read book Savings Mobilization Through Social Security written by Christine Wallich and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some sort of social security program exists in almost all developing countries. This paper attempts to examine the savings mobilization potential of the social security system in Chile, tracing its development from its beginnings as a funded system to its maturity. This case study is used to explain the seemingly inevitable transformation of the systems' financial basis from a trust fund to a pay-as-you-go arrangement, in which there is no generation of surpluses and hence, no savings mobilization. In addition to the presentation of the Chilean system, the paper includes a review of the literature on social security and savings, a general survey of social security systems, a discussion of what exactly is meant by social security, and the experiences of some typical Asian systems generally regarded as success stories from the point of view of their continued financial viability and their adjunct performance in the field of national savings mobilization. It suggests that, in the course of maturation, tensions between financial viability and success in the redistributive arena are inevitable, and that a social security scheme is not financially viable and must ultimately be financed from general revenues.

Book Undermining Rural Development With Cheap Credit

Download or read book Undermining Rural Development With Cheap Credit written by Dale W Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, twenty-three chapters are brought together in 4 parts dealing with, respectively, problems in rural finance, interest rate policies, politics and finance, and new directions for rural financial markets. In an introduction it is argued that cheap and abundant credit is often regarded as essential for rural development but that actions taken on the basis of this assumption have given disappointing results. Low-interest policies and the improper use of financial markets are seen as the principal reasons for this. It is recommended that higher and more flexible interest rates are allowed and that little or no attention is given to target loans. Informal lenders are thought to offer valuable services therefore they should not be discouraged. More emphasis should be put on voluntary savings mobilization and access to formal loans by non-farm rural firms. It is concluded that many traditional agricultural credit programmes are counterproductive and that attractive product and input prices together with higher yields would be more powerful in stimulating agricultural development.

Book Strengthening Domestic Resource Mobilization

Download or read book Strengthening Domestic Resource Mobilization written by Raul Felix Junquera-Varela and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public spending plays a key role in the economic growth and development of most developing economies. This book analyzes revenues, policy, and administration of Domestic Resource Mobilization (DRM) in developing countries. It provides a broad landscape of practical examples, drawing from lessons learned in World Bank operations across Global Practices over the past several decades. It should be thought of as a starting point for a more comprehensive research agenda rather than a complete inventory itself. This book reviews the trends in tax revenue collection in developing countries. It provides an overview of efforts to close the revenue gap, many of which have been supported by World Bank operations. The book reviews the special challenges facing low income countries, which have traditionally relied on indirect revenues in the context of limited formalization of their economies. An overview of tax policy and administration reform programs is presented, with an overview of outstanding issues that will shape the policy agenda in years ahead.
