Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saving Steam in Industrial Heating Systems A source of easily preventable loss incurred. By many factories is that of the use of live steam for heating and for other purposes where exhaust steam would be at least as satisfactory. The manner in which the exhaust-steam problem is handled constitutes the greatest single determining factor in the economy of a steam plant. Book The Lost Art of Steam Heating

Download or read book The Lost Art of Steam Heating written by Dan Holohan and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was my first book and a true labor of love. I spent decades studying steam and the work of Dead Men, in both old buildings and on library shelves. I traveled the country, haunting used-book stores, looking for engineering books that held the answers to questions that nagged at me. I was obsessed with this topic, and when I finally sat to write, I poured all that I had learned into this book, and as I wrote, I tried my best to make the words sound good to you - like we were together and having a conversation. I wanted you to know what I know and I wanted you to be able to do what I can do when it comes to old steam systems. This book arrived in 1992 and has since gone though dozens of printings. We've sold it in every state as well as in foreign countries. Steam heat is everywhere there are old buildings, so why shouldn't you be the one with the answers? Dan Holohan

Book Steam Systems in Industry

Download or read book Steam Systems in Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steam systems are a part of almost every major industrial process today. Thirty-seven percent of the fossil fuel burned in US industry is burned to produce steam. In this paper we will establish baseline energy consumption for steam systems. Based on a detailed analysis of boiler energy use we estimate current energy use in boilers in U.S. industry at 6.1 Quads (6.4 EJ), emitting almost 66 MtC in CO2 emissions. We will discuss fuels used and boiler size distribution. We also describe potential savings measures, and estimate the economic energy savings potential in U.S. industry (i.e. having payback period of 3 years or less). We estimate the nationwide economic potential, based on the evaluation of 16 individual measures in steam generation and distribution. The analysis excludes the efficient use of steam and increased heat recovery. Based on the analysis we estimate the economic potential at 18-20% of total boiler energy use, resulting in energy savings approximately 1120-1190 TBtu (1180-1260 PJ). This results in a reduction of CO2 emissions equivalent to 12-13 MtC.

Book Handbook of Industrial Power and Steam Systems

Download or read book Handbook of Industrial Power and Steam Systems written by Paul N. Garay and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1995 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is your complete guide to the systems and equipment used for producing electrical power, steam, and utility functions such as heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and water for industrial facilities. The full scope of the various types of boiler plants, turbines, pumps, and cogenerating systems are examined, including design considerations, as well as optimum application of auxiliary equipment. The critical and sometimes competing factors which contribute to the overall success of an installation, such as energy efficiency, solid and gas emissions, overall cost effectiveness and performance, convenience of operation, and safety are put into clear perspective. Energy conservation measures specific to the steam plant including heat recovery, as well as overall plant energy management, are fully explored.

Book Energy Savings in One pipe Steam Heating Systems Fitted with High capacity Air Vents Final Report

Download or read book Energy Savings in One pipe Steam Heating Systems Fitted with High capacity Air Vents Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multifamily buildings heated by one-pipe steam systems experience significant temperature gradients from apartment to apartment, often reaching 15°F. As a result, many tenants are to cold, or if the heating system output is increased so as to heat the coldest apartment adequately, too hot. While both are undesirable, the second is particularly so because it wastes energy. It was thought that insufficient air venting of the steam pipes contributed to the gradient. Theoretically, if steam mains and risers are quickly vented, steam will reach each radiator at approximately the same time and balance apartment temperatures. The project's objective was to determine if the installation of large-capacity air vents at the ends of steam mains and risers would economically reduce the temperature gradient between apartments and reduce the amount of space heating energy required. The test was conducted by enabling and disabling air vents biweekly in 10 multifamily buildings in New York City between December 1992 to May 1993. The temperatures of selected apartments and total space heating energy were compared during each venting regime. There was no difference in energy consumption between ''vents on'' and ''vents off'' periods (see Tables 2 and 5); however, there was a reduction in the maximum spread of apartment temperatures.

Book Advanced Energy Saving and its Applications in Industry

Download or read book Advanced Energy Saving and its Applications in Industry written by Kazuo Matsuda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional approach for energy saving in a process system is to maximize heat recovery without changing any process conditions by using pinch technology. “Self-heat recuperation technology” was developed to achieve further energy saving in the process system by eliminating the necessity for any external heat input, such as firing or imported steam. Advanced Energy Saving and its Applications in Industry introduces the concept of self-heat recuperation and the application of such technology to a wide range of processes from heavy chemical complexes to other processes such as drying and gas separation processes, which require heating and cooling during operation. Conventional energy saving items in a utility system are applied and implemented based on a single site approach, however, when looking at heavy chemical complexes, it was apparent that the low-grade heat discharged as waste from a refinery could also be used in an adjacent petrochemical plant. There could therefore be a large energy saving potential by utilizing the surplus heat across the sites. Advanced Energy Saving and its Applications in Industry assesses conventional approaches to industrial energy saving and explains and outlines new methods to provide even greater energy saving potential. Advanced Energy Saving and its Applications in Industry provides a key resource and research tool for all those involved in developing the energy efficiency of industrial processes. Researchers, industry professionals and even students with an interest in green engineering will find the summaries of the conventional and suggested new methods useful when attempting to advance further development within this field.
