Although characterized as a city of skyscrapers and modernity, Hong Kong has a rich cultural heritage and a surprisingly rich built heritage. The text considers what “built heritage” means in Hong Kong and what built heritage there is in Hong Kong. It introduces general readers, practitioners and students to the issues facing built heritage protection and how such protection usually develops in a modern city. In particular, it considers the problems and disputes that provided the focus for development of law and policy in Hong Kong, especially the legacy of 150 years as a British colony and the consequent identification as a “borrowed” and “temporary” place. The Brief considers how effective law and policy has been in protecting built heritage under the colonial and post-colonial administrations- their successes and failures. These include the Kowloon-Canton Railway Station, the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance, reclamation of Victoria Harbour, violent protests at Queen’s Pier, and the introduction of mandatory heritage impact assessments for government projects. The text concludes noting recent successes, which may indicate a brighter future for the protection of Hong Kong’s built heritage.

This conservation approach has become increasingly popular around the world. However, there are few publications that focus on its application in Asia. This book fills this gap by looking at both unique and shared aspects of adaptive reuse in three Asian urban centers: Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore. Building on government policy documents and extensive field work, this book contextualizes adaptive reuse in each city and reveals the impetus behind a wide range of projects from revitalization in Hong Kong, commercial development in Shanghai, to community building in Singapore. The introductory chapter sets adaptive reuse within an international perspective, noting salient differences and similarities between Asia and other parts of the world. It also anchors the discussion within a regional perspective, focusing on the similarities and differences between Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore. Each of the following four essays addresses a specific topic about adaptive reuse, including its relationship to urban development and sustainability, how it benefits heritage buildings, and how it reveals best practices in heritage conservation in Asia. Abstract: The Repulse Bay Cultural Landscape can be identified as a "Continuing Landscape" in the UNESCO cultural landscape categories. At the south end of the beach is the Hong Kong Life Saving Society Headquarters, Club House (HKLSS), and seafront Garden, which has evolved over the last fifty odd years. It continues to do so, and is highly acclaimed in Hong Kong for its water safely education and its recognition by the international community. Over the years, the HKLSS placed more than one hundred religiously related (Buddhism, Taoism and Chinese folklore) architectural elements including statues, memorial tablets, and steles, as well as pagoda and pavilion In this seafront Chinese style garden This site is used by a massive number of "stakeholders" including HKLSS members, local residents and tourists, etc. And the place is without proper management and maintenance because of lack of financial and expert support. Also, through lack of social awareness, the condition of some of the structures which may have heritage value is declining disintegrating badly. Because this place was mainly developed from the 50s onward, it is unlikely to be considered as a heritage site by conservation professionals. In order to identify this seafront property's potential heritage value, the focus of research should be on discovering and recording the heritage value of the place. My dissertation aims to reveal and explain the physical aspect and related elements-architecture and space- of this seafront property, and the social aspect- achievement- of one of its major stakeholder (The Hong Kong Life Saving Society). I have produced a SWOT Analysis Report and Heritage Assessment (Using the heritage criteria of the Hong Kong Antiquation and Monument office) in order to identify the heritage value of this place, and explain why "Preventive Conservation" is necessary. Sustainable development was placed squarely on the political agenda in Hong Kong through the Chief Executive's commitment to it in his Policy Address in 1999. This was followed by the adoption of it as an overriding objective in Hong Kong 2030: Planning Vision and Strategy (2001) and the establishment of the Sustainable Development Unit (2001) and the Council for Sustainable Development (2003). This is a book for all who are concerned about Hong Kong's environment and about its future development. The exceptional nature of Hong Kong means that this book also provides a valuable extreme case study for all who work in the sustainable development field.

Abstract: For the past decade, the general public got in touch with the noble causes of collective memory, heritage conservation and cultural heritage extensively. Many incidents such as tore down the Star Ferry Pier Clock Tower and demolition of the Queen''s Pier aroused vigorous social discussions and protests. In fact, it is not easy to understand those jargons and events when the people lack of basic knowledge of conservation and the right attitudes toward our local cultural development. Besides, the official educational department has never been enthusiastic in constructing local history and culture to students both in primary and secondary levels before handover. Regrettably, our present curriculum reforms are still at an indeterminate stage. Without widespread and fundamental background knowledge and cognition, it is very hard to start rational conversation between different stakeholders, even hard to motivate our next generations to participate heritage conservation affairs actively. With no doubt, heritage conservation has become a hot and a controversial social topic in recent years. Not only because Hong Kong has regained its identity after return to Mainland China in 1997, but also there emerges a positive attitude towards Hong Kong as our home among most people in the post-transition era. However, the rapid economic and social development, as well as urbanization changes our city''s scenery and characteristics drastically. Our treasured cultural heritage is at risk now. Therefore, "Save Our Heritage, Retain Our Memory" is a fashionable slogan in these years. No one will argue that heritage is an important resource and asset to a society. Because it reflects not only the uniqueness and diversity of our community, but it also helps to sustain and strengthen our sense of place identity and cultural identity. Since most primary school students learn about local history (include cultural heritage) and cultural identity in different learning stages, what they obtain are some incomplete and incoherent information. This ridiculous situation of our present Primary School General Studies Curriculum cannot fulfill and satisfy their future study need. In order to fill up the gap and link up the Secondary Liberal Studies syllabus, this dissertation try to construct a school-based learning programme which the author personally believe that through heritage education will definitely provide the student opportunities for a better understanding of their identity and cultural heritage. Thus, the author attempts to design and develop a heritage educational programme for the primary six pupils who are aged from eleven to thirteen. The main purposes of the programme strive to educate target students: 1. Arouses interest and curiosity in local history 2. Understand the meaning of cultural heritage 3. Distinguish the different between tangible and intangible cultural heritage 4. Appreciate Hong Kong''s cultural heritage resources 5.
