Book excerpt: Set in Westport and New York City, the novel opens at a major medical center, where psychologist and twice-monthly newspaper columnist Dinah Rosenberg Galligan -- mother of Elijah, a 5-year-old coma victim -- meets a ghost with a surprising connection to her troubled past. The spirit who calls himself Seth Lucien proves a very seductive fellow indeed. Claiming to know what lies in store for Dinah and her family, Seth promises he can make everything turn out all right. Otherwise, Elijah is destined to live out the rest of his life as a "stone child" -- trapped in a vegetative state that, with the help of modern technology, could go on for years. Estranged from her parents, unable to communicate with her husband or two older children, Dinah seizes on this opportunity to snatch her boy back from a cruel and pointless future. And so an unearthly bargain is struck -- one that brings Dinah back to a place she has long avoided, nearly destroys her marriage, yet ultimately leaves her where she needs to be.

Book excerpt: Nothing could be more important than the health of our children, and no one is better suited to examine the threats against it than Sandra Steingraber. Once called "a poet with a knife," she blends precise science with lyrical memoir. In Living Downstream she spoke as a biologist and cancer survivor; in Having Faith she spoke as an ecologist and expectant mother, viewing her own body as a habitat. Now she speaks as the scientist mother of two young children, enjoying and celebrating their lives while searching for ways to protect them--and all children--from the toxic, climate-threatened world they inhabit Each chapter of this engaging and unique book focuses on one inevitable ingredient of childhood--everything from pizza to laundry to homework to the "Big Talk"--and explores the underlying social, political, and ecological forces behind it. Through these everyday moments, Steingraber demonstrates how closely the private, intimate world of parenting connects to the public world of policy-making and how the ongoing environmental crisis is, fundamentally, a crisis of family life.

Book Elijah and the Rabbis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kristen H. Lindbeck
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2010-07-01
  • ISBN : 0231525478
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Elijah and the Rabbis written by Kristen H. Lindbeck and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an innovative synthesis of narrative critique, oral-formulaic study, folkloric research, and literary analysis, Kristen H. Lindbeck reads all the Elijah narratives in the Babylonian Talmud and details the rise of a distinct, quasi-angelic figure who takes pleasure in ordinary interaction. During the Talmudic period of 50-500 C.E., Elijah developed into a recognizable character quite different from the Elijah of the Bible. The Elijah of the Talmud dispenses wisdom, advice, and, like the Elijah of Jewish folklore, helps people directly, even with material gifts. Lindbeck highlights particular features of the Elijah stories, allowing them to be grouped into generic categories and considered alongside Rabbinic literary motifs and non-Jewish traditions of late antiquity. She compares Elijah in the Babylonian Talmud to a range of characters angels, rabbis, wonder-workers, the angel of death, Christian saints, and even the Greek god Hermes. She concludes with a survey of Elijah's diverse roles from medieval times to today, throwing into brilliant relief the complex relationship between ancient Elijah traditions and later folktales and liturgy that show Elijah bringing benefits and blessings, appearing at circumcisions and Passover, and visiting households after the Sabbath.

Over the course of a year, the towns of the Fray have now grown rampant with civil unrest, inequality, crime, and mental afflictions, which have become more prominent and prevalent in the mind of the weary hunter, and of course, the white plague, which he continues to suffer from every day. On his journey, he comes across a vast array of characters, some that strengthens his resolve and others that threaten his life. Albeit, the hunter has always been a survivor, who is now fueled by a purpose that has reverted back to vengeance.

Book The Elijah Elisha Narrative in the Composition of Luke

Download or read book The Elijah Elisha Narrative in the Composition of Luke written by John S. Kloppenborg and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines the allusions to the Elijah- Elisha narrative in the gospel of Luke. The volume presents the case for a “maximalist” view, which holds that the Elijah-Elisha narrative had a dominant role in the composition of Luke 7 and 9, put forward by Thomas L. Brodie and John Shelton, with critical responses to this thesis by Robert Derrenbacker, Alex Damm, F. Gerald Downing, David Peabody, Dennis MacDonald and Joseph Verheyden. Taken together the contributions to this volume provide fascinating insights into the composition of the gospel of Luke, and the editorial processes involved in its creation. Contributions cover different approaches to the text, including issues of intertextuality and rhetorical-critical examinations. The distinguished contributors and fast-paced debate make this book an indispensable addition to any theological library.

Book Code of the Street Decency Violence and the Moral Life of the Inner City

Download or read book Code of the Street Decency Violence and the Moral Life of the Inner City written by Elijah Anderson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2000-09-17 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsparing and important. . . . An informative, clearheaded and sobering book.—Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post (1999 Critic's Choice) Inner-city black America is often stereotyped as a place of random violence, but in fact, violence in the inner city is regulated through an informal but well-known code of the street. This unwritten set of rules—based largely on an individual's ability to command respect—is a powerful and pervasive form of etiquette, governing the way in which people learn to negotiate public spaces. Elijah Anderson's incisive book delineates the code and examines it as a response to the lack of jobs that pay a living wage, to the stigma of race, to rampant drug use, to alienation and lack of hope.

Book Elijah Prophet of Carmel

Download or read book Elijah Prophet of Carmel written by Jane Ackerman and published by ICS Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of the three monotheistic faiths have always told stories of what the prophet Elijah has done and is still expected to do in sacred history. He is perhaps most appreciated by members of the Carmelite Order, known for its contemplative and pastoral orientation. Elijah is considered their legendary founder and traditional patron. Carmelites rank him as one of their greatest spiritual models. Their coat of arms displays his flaming sword, Mount Carmel, and Elijah's proclamation, "With zeal I have been zealous for the Lord God of Hosts." This book inquires into this deep appreciation. It examines the linkage between the Order and the prophet over time. More Information Beginning with the oldest knowledge we have about Elijah, coming from Scripture, Elijah Prophet of Carmel briefly sketches his role in the three faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It then turns to what the distant, but influential, Christian antecedents of the Carmelite Order, the desert hermits and the early Fathers, wrote about the zealous man of God. As the Carmelite Order was founded, achieved its corporate identity, and changed over time, so did its views of its legendary model. Interaction between storytelling about Elijah and Carmelites' understanding of themselves continues even to the present. As thoughts from the past about the prophet continue to influence them, both Teresian Carmelites and Carmelites of the Ancient Observance of our times are developing a brand-new tradition of him, the tradition of Elijah's double charism.
