Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the &“golden weather&” of postwar economic growth, through the globalization, economic challenges, and protest of the 1960s and 1970s, to the free market revolution and new immigrants of the 1980s and 1990s and beyond, this account, the most complete and comprehensive history of New Zealand since 1945, illustrates the chronological and social history of the country with the engaging stories of real individuals and their experiences. Leading historians Jennifer Carlyon and Diana Morrow discuss in great depth New Zealand's move toward nuclear-free status, its embrace of a small-state, free-market ideology, and the seeming rejection of its citizens of a society known for the &“worship of averages.&” Stories of pirate radio in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, the first DC8 jets landing at Mangere airport, feminists liberating pubs, public protests over the closing of post offices, and indigenous language nests vividly demonstrate how a postwar society famous around the world for its dull conformity became one of the most ethnically, economically, and socially diverse countries on earth.

Book The Drama of Conservation

Download or read book The Drama of Conservation written by Carolyn M. King and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-07 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a sweeping history of Pureora Forest Park, one of the most significant sites of natural and cultural history interest in New Zealand. The authors review the geological history of the volcanic zone, its flora and fauna, and the history of Maori and European utilization of forest resources. Chapter-length discussions cover management of the native forest by the New Zealand Forest Service; the forest village and its sawmills; the intensive timber harvesting, and the conflicts with conservationists and expensive compensation agreements that ensued. Separate chapters cover initiatives to protect the forest from introduced herbivores; to guard protected species, especially birds, from predators; the facilities for recreational hunting; the development of the Timber Trail, an 83 km cycleway through the forest and along old logging tramways, complete with detailed interpretation signs illustrating the history of logging; and the family recreation areas and tracks. The final chapter gathers conclusions and advances prospects for the future of Pureora Forest. In sum, the book demonstrates how ecological study, combined with a respect for people and for nature plus a flexible, interdisciplinary approach to both local history and current scientific priorities, can be welded into a consistently effective strategy for addressing the pressing forest-ecology questions of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 2004 presidential campaign, when the Bush presidential advance team prevented anyone who seemed unsympathetic to their candidate from attending his ostensibly public appearances, it has become commonplace for law enforcement officers and political event sponsors to classify ordinary expressions of dissent as security threats and to try to keep officeholders as far removed from possible protest as they can. Thus without formally limiting free speech the government places arbitrary restrictions on how, when, and where such speech may occur.

Book Last Chance Tourism

Download or read book Last Chance Tourism written by Harvey Lemelin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over vanishing destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Everglades of Florida, the ice cap on Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the Maldives have prompted some travel operators and tour agencies to recommend these destinations to consumers before they disappear. This is the first book to empirically examine and evaluate this contemporary tourism development providing a new angle on the effects of global change and pressures of visitation on tourism destinations. It aims to develop the conceptual definition of last-chance tourism, examine the ethics surrounding this type of travel, and provide case studies highlighting this form of tourism in different regions. In particular it critically reviews the advantages of publicizing these vulnerable destinations to raise awareness and promote conservation efforts, but also the issue of attracting more tourists seeking to undergo such experiences before they are gone forever, accelerating the negative impacts. It further examines current trends, discusses escalating challenges, and highlight future opportunities.

Book What Does Green Mean

Download or read book What Does Green Mean written by James GS Marshall and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians have seen Liberal governments. They’ve seen Conservative governments. And they’ve seen New Democrat governments. But as of 2019 they still have yet to see a Green government. Around the rest of the world, however, Green Parties have formed governments many times. In many countries they have been an established part of the political domain for decades. And they’re not seen as a “single-issue party”, as they’re so often wrongly described in Canada. What Does Green Mean? is a world tour of Green parties and Green political ideas. Using international examples of Green parties from around the globe, it explores what the Greens are trying to do for politics and for the planet. From Green governments in Germany, Sweden, and Ireland, to the individuals who founded the Canadian Green movement, the book aims to leave the reader with a richer understanding of what Green truly means.
