Book Savannah Augusta Brier Creek

Download or read book Savannah Augusta Brier Creek written by Daniel McDonald Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Savannah, Augusta & Brier Creek examines the British conquest of Georgia during the American Revolution from several perspectives. The first part is a narrative history starting with the capture of Savannah by British troops, continuing with the march to Augusta led by Archibald Campbell, and culminating with the British victory at Battle of Brier Creek, which resulted in the resumption of colonial rule over Georgia. The narrative focuses on Samuel Elbert, the commander of Georgia's Continental line, who resisted the capture of Savannah, harassed the march to Augusta, and made a valiant stand at Brier Creek before being taken prisoner. The second part presents stories of dubious validity arising from the Battle of Brier Creek, and places them in the context of folklore and Arthurian legend. The third part provides biographical sketches of Samuel Elbert, who distinguished himself in the American Revolution and later served as governor of Georgia, and of John McIntosh, who was a hero of the American Revolution, a rebel in Spanish East Florida, and a general in the War of 1812.The fourth part contains a visitor's guide to the Brier Creek Battleground and other Revolutionary War sites along the Savannah River from Savannah to Augusta.

Book Women in the American Revolution

Download or read book Women in the American Revolution written by Sudie Doggett Wike and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without the support of American women, victory in the Revolutionary War would not have been possible. They followed the Continental Army, handling a range of jobs that were usually performed by men. On the orders of General Washington, some were hired as nurses for $2 per month and one full ration per day--disease was rampant and nurse mortality was high. A few served with artillery units or masqueraded as men to fight in the ranks. The author focuses on the many key roles women filled in the struggle for independence, from farming to making saltpeter to spying.
