Book excerpt: A professional translator and amateur detective travels to Barcelona to find a missing man in this mystery hailed as a “high-spirited comic adventure” (The New York Times). American but with an Irish passport, the itinerant translator Cassandra Reilly is living in London when she receives an unexpected phone call. The voice on the other end belongs to Frankie Stevens, a San Francisco transplant with an unusual request. Her husband, Ben, has gone missing—presumably in Barcelona—and Frankie needs a translator to help her find him. Not one to pass up a well-paying gig or a free trip to Barcelona, Cassandra takes the job. But she quickly realizes that all is not as it seems. Frankie’s charm is matched only by her guile. As Cassandra chases down leads in search of Ben, she becomes increasingly tangled in a web of half-truths—and caught between former flames Ana and Carmen. Winner of the British Crime Writers’ Award for Best Mystery Based in Europe and the Lambda Literary Award for Best Lesbian Mystery, Gaudí Afternoon is the first book in the Cassandra Reilly Mystery series, which continues with Trouble in Transylvania and The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman, and concludes with The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists.

Book The Short Story On Saturday Afternoon Alan Sillitoe

Download or read book The Short Story On Saturday Afternoon Alan Sillitoe written by Hanno Frey and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7 (A-), University of Hamburg (Anglistics Seminar), course: Seminar 1b, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The Short Story "On Saturday Afternoon" by Alan Sillitoe is a highly complex piece of literature. It does not merely represent the description of the experiences the narrator has made on one Saturday afternoon but it contains far more: It implies information about the social system the speaker lives in, his family background and his psychology. It would therefore not be very appropriate to make use of only one of the approaches that have so far been developed in order to interpret literature. Thus, in the case of this story it is not the question whether the reader "should" relate the author's biography to the text, consider its intertextuality or try to interpret the text on the basis of its words alone1. For some stories it may be possible to pose and answer this question clearly, but with respect to "On Saturday Afternoon" it is not. Here a "mixture" of different methods offers the best access to the text because it covers more aspects of the story than one single approach does. Consequently, in this term paper I am going to deal with the Short Story "On Saturday Afternoon" by Alan Sillitoe considering the following aspects: The contents of the story, its inner structure and its relation to Sillitoe ́s biography and some of his other works. In doing so I am aware of the fact that it is necessary and inevitable only to focus on certain aspects of the approaches - as the scope of this term paper is restricted- and therefore it is impossible to develop an interpretation which covers every aspect each one of these methods offers. Nevertheless I am convinced that the way I have chosen gains by the interplay of the accesses what it lacks from completeness.

In Like This Afternoon Forever, two priests already forced to hide their forbidden love come across evidence of widespread government violence." --CrimeReads, included in the Most Anticipated Crime Books of Summer 2019 "Jaime Manrique's dreamy Like This Afternoon Forever...tells the story of two gay priests against the backdrop of drug cartels in Colombia." --Kirkus Reviews, included in Radha Vatsal's "Beyond Nordic Noir: On International Crime Fiction" column "Against the backdrop of guerrilla warfare in Colombia, two young men fall in love while studying to become Catholic priests. Manrique, a recipient of Colombia's National Poetry Award as well as a Guggenheim fellowship, weaves into his story the 'false positives' scandal, in which members of the Colombian military sought to drum up the number of guerilla fighters they'd killed by murdering and misidentifying innocent civilians." --Publishers Weekly, included in LGBTQ Feature "Manrique's drama of a dangerous love affair in a world of blood, terror, displacement, and desperation grapples with profound and persistent conflicts." --Booklist For the last fifty years, the Colombian drug cartels, various insurgent groups, and the government have fought over the control of the drug traffic, in the process destroying vast stretches of the Amazon, devastating Indian communities, and killing tens of thousands of homesteaders caught in the middle of the conflict. Inspired by these events, Jaime Manrique's sixth novel, Like This Afternoon Forever, weaves in two narratives: the shocking story of a series of murders known internationally as "the false positives," and the related story of two gay Catholic priests who become lovers when they meet in the seminary. Lucas (the son of farmers) and Ignacio (a descendant of the Barí indigenous people) enter the seminary out of a desire to help others and to get an education. Their visceral love story undergoes stages of passion, indifference, rage, and a final commitment to stay together until the end of their lives. Working in a community largely composed of people displaced by the war, Ignacio stumbles upon the horrifying story of the false positives, which will put the lives of the two men in grave danger.
