Book A Laser System for Satellite Geodesy

Download or read book A Laser System for Satellite Geodesy written by Robert L. Iliff and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel laser system designed and developed for satellite illumination is based on the use of two ruby lasers. It obtains range with a Q-switched laser and angular information by photographing satellite-reflected high-energy normal-mode laser pulses against stellar fields. The Q-switched laser system, operated in a controlled multipulse mode, is capable of up to 10 range measurements in a single pumping period. This increases confidence in the validity of the measurements especially since they are obtained in the presence of the high background noise that is encountered in daylight range measurements. The difference in satellite range within a 400-microsec time frame has been observed by means of the multipulse approach. (Author).

Book A Novel Laser Ranging System for Measurement of Ground to satellite Distances

Download or read book A Novel Laser Ranging System for Measurement of Ground to satellite Distances written by Kurt E. Golden and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique was developed for improving the precision of laser ranging measurements of ground-to-satellite distances. The method employs a mode-locked laser transmitter and utilizes an image converter tube equipped with deflection plates in measuring the time of flight of the laser pulse to a distant retroreflector and back. Samples of the outgoing and returning light pulses are focussed on the photocathode of the image converter tube, whose deflection plates are driven by a high-voltage 120 MHz sine wave derived from a very stable oscillator. From the relative positions of the images produced at the output phosphor by the two light pulses, it is possible to make a precise determination of the fractional amount by which the time of flight exceeds some large integral multiple of the period of the deflection sinusoid.

Book The Airborne Laser Ranging System Its Capabilities and Applications

Download or read book The Airborne Laser Ranging System Its Capabilities and Applications written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The airborne laser ranging system is a multibeam short pulse laser ranging system on board an aircraft. It simultaneously measures the distances between the aircraft and six laser retroreflectors (targets) deployed on the Earth's surface. The system can interrogate over 100 targets distributed over an area of 25,000 sq, kilometers in a matter of hours. Potentially, a total of 1.3 million individual range measurements can be made in a six hour flight. The precision of these range measurements is approximately + or - 1 cm. These measurements are used in procedure which is basically an extension of trilateration techniques to derive the intersite vector between the laser ground targets. By repeating the estimation of the intersite vector, strain and strain rate errors can be estimated. These quantities are essential for crustal dynamic studies which include determination and monitoring of regional strain in the vicinity of active fault zones, land subsidence, and edifice building preceding volcanic eruptions. Book Scientific Applications of Lunar Laser Ranging

Download or read book Scientific Applications of Lunar Laser Ranging written by J.D. Mulholland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progress of science during the past centuries has been in some measure energized by the development of new technologies. People are no more intelligent now than they were five centuries ago, or indeed five millenia ago. The differences are in the pool of past experience and the availability of means for manipulating the physical and mental environment. Until fairly recently, the development of new technologies in astronomy and geodesy has served primarily either to broaden the scope of phenomena that could be studied or to improve the precision with which one could examine already-studied phenomena. There seemed to be no likelihood that a situation could arise similar to that in particle physics, where the uncertainty principle indicates that the observation of the state of an object alters that state, affecting the observation. Indeed, we have not yet reached that point, but certain of the new techniques have introduced a degree of complication and inter dependence perhaps not previously encountered in the macro sciences. When observational capability is so fine that the data can be corrupted by the tidal motions of the instruments, for example, then there are a myriad of physical effects that must be considered in analyzing the data; the happy aspect of this is that the data can be used to study exactly these same effects. The complication does not, however, extend only to predictive computations against which the data are compared.

Book Study on the Improvement of the Stability of the Laser System Used

Download or read book Study on the Improvement of the Stability of the Laser System Used written by Hesham Mansour and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a very strong interest to achieve stability from mode-locked laser beam for satellite laser radar station at Helwan by using a more simple, stable, and easier mode-locker. The energy stability of the laser output can improve the accuracy and reliability of the Helwan satellite laser ranging station ranging data remarkably. Normally, the saturable absorber dyes dissolved in dichlorethan has been used for Q-switching and Mode-locking of this system for many years. Decomposition and degradation of this type of mode-locking is a disadvantage simply because it is not permanent and needs to be mixed and to be renewed, often, every 5-10 working nights). It's also poisonous; and dissolved in a highly flammable solvents, besides the energy stability of the resulting pulses is not high. All of these reasons gave rise to the idea of this work, which is to study the possibility of using other more suitable, safer, and easier-to-install mode-locker which can result in a better output stability of the system.

Book Determination of Crustal Motions Using Satellite Laser Ranging

Download or read book Determination of Crustal Motions Using Satellite Laser Ranging written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-27 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satellite laser ranging has matured over the last decade into one of the essential space geodesy techniques. It has demonstrated centimeter site positioning and millimeter per year velocity determinations in a frame tied dynamically to the mass center of the solid Earth hydrosphere atmosphere system. Such a coordinate system is a requirement for studying long term eustatic sea level rise and other global change phenomena. Earth orientation parameters determined with the coordinate system have been produced in near real time operationally since 1983, at a relatively modest cost. The SLR ranging to Lageos has also provided a rich spectrum of results based upon the analysis of Lageos orbital dynamics. These include significant improvements in the knowledge of the mean and variable components of the Earth's gravity field and the Earth's gravitational parameter. The ability to measure the time variations of the Earth's gravity field has opened as exciting area of study in relating global processes, including meteorologically derived mass transport through changes in the satellite dynamics. New confirmation of general relativity was obtained using the Lageos SLR data. Unspecified Center
