Book A Devil of a Job to Find Satan in the Bible

Download or read book A Devil of a Job to Find Satan in the Bible written by A. Nyland and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Bible reveal that God created a devil? Will Satan and his demons torture the wicked forever in a burning hell? Christianity asserts these teachings are found in the Bible. The Bible itself, however, reveals something different! The trouble with the whole Devil question is that Christianity's view of "Satan" is more colored by the views of the Essenes and John Milton's Paradise Lost than by any reading of the Bible itself. The Essenes' view of punishment of the ungodly in the eternal fires of hell, a hell run by the chief evil spirit with his angels, is precisely that of Christianity today. However, nowhere in the Bible does it say anything of the sort.

Book Satan in the Bible God s Minister of Justice

Download or read book Satan in the Bible God s Minister of Justice written by Henry Ansgar Kelly and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages, Satan has been seen as God’s implacable enemy, fiercely determined to keep as many human beings as he can from entering the heavenly kingdom. But according to Henry Ansgar Kelly, this understanding dates only from post-biblical times, when Satan was reconceived as Lucifer, a rebel angel, and as the serpent in the garden of Eden. In the Bible itself, beginning in the book of Job and continuing through the New Testament, Satan is considered to be a member of the heavenly government, charged with monitoring the human race. In effect, he is God’s Minister of Justice, bent on exposing sin and vice, especially in virtuous-seeming persons like Job and Jesus. He fills the roles of investigator, tempter (that is, tester), accuser, prosecutor, and punisher, but also obstructer, preventer of vice, and rehabilitator. He is much feared and despised, accused of underhanded and immoral tactics. His removal from office is promised and his eventual punishment hoped for. The later misreading of Satan as radically depraved transformed Christianity into a highly dualistic religion, with an ongoing contest between good and evil. Seeing Satan in his true nature, as a cynical and sinister celestial bureaucrat, will help to remedy this distorted view.

Book Canaan and Israel in Antiquity A Textbook on History and Religion

Download or read book Canaan and Israel in Antiquity A Textbook on History and Religion written by K. L. Noll and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive classic textbook represents the most recent approaches to the biblical world by surveying Palestine's social, political, economic, religious and ecological changes from Palaeolithic to Roman eras. Designed for beginners with little knowledge of the ancient world, and with copious illustrations and charts, it explains how and why academic study of the past is undertaken, as well as the differences between historical and theological scholarship and the differences between ancient and modern genres of history writing. Classroom tested chapters emphasize the authenticity of the Bible as a product of an ancient culture, and the many problems with the biblical narrative as a historical source. Neither "maximalist" nor "minimalist'" it is sufficiently general to avoid confusion and to allow the assignment of supplementary readings such as biblical narratives and ancient Near Eastern texts. This new edition has been fully revised, incorporating new graphics and English translations of Near Eastern inscriptions. New material on the religiously diverse environment of Ancient Israel taking into account the latest archaeological discussions brings this book right up to date.

Book The Beginning and End of Wisdom Foreword by Sidney Greidanus

Download or read book The Beginning and End of Wisdom Foreword by Sidney Greidanus written by Douglas Sean O'Donnell and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wisdom literature of the Old Testament can be daunting. Sidney Greidanus, in the book's foreword, describes Old Testament wisdom literature as "one of the more difficult genres to interpret and preach." Yet the numerous proverbs and sayings meet us in everyday life, teaching us much about understanding and applying the gospel. Pastor Douglas O'Donnell writes, "Just as every book of the Old Testament adds light to our understanding of Jesus, so the revelation of God in the person of Christ enlightens our understanding of the Old Testament." Not only do the wisdom books teach us about Jesus Christ, but we understand the books better in light of the revelation of God's Son. O'Donnell opens up the genre of wisdom literature through six chapters that look at how the gospel shines through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. He specifically centers on the first and last chapters of each book, noting how the texts illustrate "the wisdom of God in the sufferings of our Savior." Pastors, church leaders, and students of Scripture will find this thoughtful volume demonstrative of seeing the gospel in the Wisdom Literature.
