Book East Rome Sasanian Persia and the End of Antiquity

Download or read book East Rome Sasanian Persia and the End of Antiquity written by James Howard-Johnston and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last, longest and most damaging of the wars fought between East Rome and Sasanian Persia (603-628) brought the classical phase of west Eurasian history to a dramatic close. Despite its evident significance, not least as the distant setting for Muhammad's prophetic mission, this last great war of antiquity attracted comparatively little scholarly attention until the last decades of the twentieth century. James Howard-Johnston's contributions to the subject, most of which were published in out-of-the-way places (one, that on al-Tabari, is printed for the first time), are brought together in convenient form in this volume. They strive to root history in close observation of landscape and monuments as well as careful analysis of texts. They explore the evolving balance of power between the two empires, look at events through Roman, Armenian and Arab eyes, and home in on the climax of the final conflict in the 620s.

Book Sasanian Seals and Sealings in the A Saeedi Collection

Download or read book Sasanian Seals and Sealings in the A Saeedi Collection written by Rika Gyselen and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the Sasanian seals published in this catalogue have been in the Saeedi family collection for several decades. The collection, however, has continued to grow since this publication was conceived, with more seals being added to it as the opportunity arose. The 131 seals included here are only a small part of the collection, and the sample applies to the clay sealings covered in this work. Where more than one sealing bears the same impression, we have contented ourselves with reproducing one well-preserved specimen, or, where necessary, two less well-preserved ones. This work, therefore, does not include all the sealings cited in my previous work on administrative seals. A concordance between those cited in that work and those published here is instead provided. Comprising as it does some 463 clay sealings, at least half of which bear the seals of administrative bodies or high-ranking dignitaries, this collection is the richest ever to have been published.

Book Dome of the Rock and its Umayyad Mosaic Inscriptions

Download or read book Dome of the Rock and its Umayyad Mosaic Inscriptions written by Milwright Marcus Milwright and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock was constructed at the end of the seventh century by order of caliph 'Abd al-Malik. This seminal structure has been much studied but no definitive interpretation yet exists of the meanings conveyed by the Dome at the time of its completion. The recovery of meaning is complicated by the paucity of primary written sources relating to the construction phases of the building and the motivations of its patron. This book concentrates on the most important surviving primary text, the long mosaic inscription running around the interior. Comprising a dedication and date (72/691-92) and material of a religious nature, the mosaic inscription provides vital evidence for the reconstruction of the meanings and functions of the Dome of the Rock. The detailed study of the mosaics helps to place them in the context of Late Antique monumental writing, particularly in Greek. The book makes use of contemporary Islamic coins, graffiti, and other inscribed objects in order to examine the Dome of the Rock in the relation to the ideological concerns of the Umayyad elite during and after the second Civil War.

Book Cities of Medieval Iran

Download or read book Cities of Medieval Iran written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities of Medieval Iran brings together studies in urban geography, archaeology, and history of medieval Iranian cities, spanning the Islamic period until ca. 1500, but also the pre-Islamic situation. The cities and their inhabitants take centre stage, they are not just the places where something else happened. Urban actors are given priority over external factors. The contributions take a long-term perspective and thus take the interaction between urban centres and their hinterland into account. Many contributions come from history or archaeology, but new disciplines are also methodologically integrated into the study of medieval cities, such as the arts of the book, lexicography, geomorphology, and digital instruments. Contributors include Denise Aigle, Mehrdad Amanat, Jean Aubin, Richard W. Bulliet, Jamsheed K. Choksy, David Durand-Guédy, Etienne de la Vaissière, Majid Montazer Mahdi, Roy P. Mottahedeh, Jürgen Paul, Rocco Rante, Sarah Savant, Ali Shojai Esfahani, Donald Whitcomb and Daniel Zakrzewski.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details Persias growing military and economic power in the late antique worldThe Sasanian Empire (3rd7th centuries) was one of the largest empires of antiquity, stretching from Mesopotamia to modern Pakistan and from Central Asia to the Arabian Peninsula. This mega-empire withstood powerful opponents in the steppe and expanded further in Late Antiquity, whilst the Roman world shrunk in size. Recent research has revealed the reasons for this success: notably population growth in some key territories, economic prosperity, and urban development, made possible through investment in agriculture and military infrastructure on a scale unparalleled in the late antique world. Our volume explores the empires relations with its neighbours and key phenomena which contributed to its wealth and power, from the empires armed forces to agriculture, trade and treatment of minorities. The latest discoveries, notably major urban foundations, fortifications and irrigations systems, feature prominently. An empire whose military might and culture rivalled Rome and foreshadowed the caliphate will be of interest to scholars of the Roman and Islamic world.Challenges our Eurocentric world view by presenting a Near-Eastern empire whose urban culture and military apparatus rivalled that of Rome Covers the latest discoveries on foundations, fortifications and irrigation systemsIncludes case studies on Sasanian frontier walls and urban culture in the Sasanian Empire

Book Facts and Artefacts Art in the Islamic World

Download or read book Facts and Artefacts Art in the Islamic World written by Annette Hagedorn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-11-13 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scholarly search on the art of the object is of enduring interest and enjoys a new renaissance in the last few years. This book mainly explores the art and craft of Islamic artefacts and presents to the reader a diverse range of approaches. Despite this variety, in which also artefacts of the pre-Islamic, period as well as 'orientalized' European artefacts of the modern era are included, there is an overarching theme – the linking of the interpretation of objects and their specific aesthetics to textual sources and the aim of setting them in historical and artistic context. In this impressive collection honouring the German scholar of Islamic art Jens Kröger on his 65th birthday, Avinoam Shalem and Annette Hagedorn bring together contributions from a highly distinguished group of scholars of Asiatic, Sasanian, Islamic as well as European art history. Unpublished artefacts and new interpretations are presented in this book.

Book Multiple Identification Alternatives for Two Sassanid Equestrians on F r z b d I Relief

Download or read book Multiple Identification Alternatives for Two Sassanid Equestrians on F r z b d I Relief written by Reza Kalani and published by Tarikh Negar Monthly. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the king himself, the identity of other figures carved out of Sassanid reliefs has mostly been controversial. This study attempts to resolve one of such controversial discussions on the identity of two Sassanid equestrians depicted on the Fīrūzābād I relief and thus on other Ardašīr I's reliefs. In a bid to cast light upon obscured Sassanid genealogical topics, the heraldic concept was took precedence in the course of investigations. To the best of the present author's knowledge, historical texts (mostly Arabic sources), numismatic evidence and visual analysis of ornaments probably related to ranks were all employed for this purpose. In some cases, however, the author was forced into an argumentum ex silentio against his will due to a lack or shortage of historical evidence. There are two premises central to this investigation: first, the fact that the early Sassanids followed the lead of the late Arsacids in several political and cultural aspects, and, second, the existence of a sort of a heraldic system in both early Sassanid and late Arsacid periods.
