Book A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases

Download or read book A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic diseases are common and costly, yet they are also among the most preventable health problems. Comprehensive and accurate disease surveillance systems are needed to implement successful efforts which will reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the U.S. population. A number of sources of surveillance data-including population surveys, cohort studies, disease registries, administrative health data, and vital statistics-contribute critical information about chronic disease. But no central surveillance system provides the information needed to analyze how chronic disease impacts the U.S. population, to identify public health priorities, or to track the progress of preventive efforts. A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases outlines a conceptual framework for building a national chronic disease surveillance system focused primarily on cardiovascular and chronic lung diseases. This system should be capable of providing data on disparities in incidence and prevalence of the diseases by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, along with data on disease risk factors, clinical care delivery, and functional health outcomes. This coordinated surveillance system is needed to integrate and expand existing information across the multiple levels of decision making in order to generate actionable, timely knowledge for a range of stakeholders at the local, state or regional, and national levels. The recommendations presented in A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases focus on data collection, resource allocation, monitoring activities, and implementation. The report also recommends that systems evolve along with new knowledge about emerging risk factors, advancing technologies, and new understanding of the basis for disease. This report will inform decision-making among federal health agencies, especially the Department of Health and Human Services; public health and clinical practitioners; non-governmental organizations; and policy makers, among others.

Book Transnational Migration and Human Security

Download or read book Transnational Migration and Human Security written by Thanh-Dam Truong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume places the migration-development-security nexus in the field of transnational studies. Rather than treating these three categories as self-evident, the essays excavate aspects of power and privilege built into their governing frameworks and conflicting rationales apparent in practices of control. Bringing together diverse experiences and case studies, the volume highlights the problematic nature of maintaining distinct and disconnected frameworks of governance. It argues for a new approach that demonstrates the significance and usefulness of comparative ethics in conceptualising migration from a human-centered and gendered perspective in order to address the multi-facetted and multi-dimensional nature and meanings of "security".

Book excerpt: Never before have the techniques and operations of special forces around the world been revealed in such fascinating detail. Journalist and soldier Mike Ryan's access to restricted information is at the heart of this extraordinary look into the world of special forces and their tactics, training, and protocols. Ryan's web of military contacts in the U.S. and Europe allows him to tell the full stories of famous special forces units (like the SAS, Delta Force, and the French Foreign Legion), to discuss their role today on an ever-changing battlefield, and to ponder their increasing use as political enforcers. Soldiers from all over the world talk candidly about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, and operations in the Balkans, Somalia, and Sierra Leone. Every entry on a unit, tactic, or weapon is backed up with photographs of it in action, as well as testimony from operators in the field and a full analysis of its combat effectiveness. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. Book Policing Politics

Download or read book Policing Politics written by Peter Gill and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Gill develops a framework for the comparative analysis of security agencies, discussing what is known about the operations of security intelligence agencies in liberal democracies and, second, an agenda for research into the UK agencies, including: the ambitious nature of their mandate regarding "national security", "subversion" and "terrorism"; theways in which the agencies penetrate society and what they do with the information they gather; internal organizational questions such as recruitment and culture; the extent to which the agencies are controlled by ministers; and how the agencies' activities might be overseen by outside political bodies such as parliamentary committees and by citizens in general. - Concluding that not enough is known about how these agencies operate in the UK, the book argues the need for a thorough enquiry to investigate allegations, and to make proposals for a more democratic system of security intelligence.
