Book excerpt: Saratoga Springs is colorful not only culturally and historically, but also literally. Come spring and summer the historic resort town is filled with lush plantings in the public parks, around private homes from the grandest to the most modest, at the Saratoga Race Course grounds and the Skidmore College campus, and even throughout the business district along Broadway. Rather than discouraging Saratoga's green thumbs, the challenging northern climate only inspires residents to celebrate the return of warm weather and the horse-racing season each year with joyful displays of gardens, fountains, and flower-filled containers of every description. "History, health, and horses," the city's motto, neatly sums up Saratoga's most famous attributes. In this celebration of the region's gardens and the people who create them, photographer and writer Janet Loughrey shows us that "horticulture" should be added to that list.

Book My Ever Blooming Flower Garden Saratoga Springs NY

Download or read book My Ever Blooming Flower Garden Saratoga Springs NY written by Irina Chukhlomina and published by . This book was released on 2012-06-04 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an illustration of the idea of "multilayer flower garden technique". A distinct feature that vitalizes this flower garden technique and makes it unique is its continuous, non-stop flourishing in every corner all season long - from April through October. As one group of plants stops blooming, it "passes the baton" to the next group of flowers located on the very same spot; this produces a spectacular non-stop blossoming effect for the entire season. The book presents six areas ("spots") of the small garden. A reader will see how each "spot" of the garden several times changes dramatically during the season, presenting a set of very distinct pictures. The secret is in applying the multilayer garden flower technique - while one "layer" of flowers is blooming, another one is already resting, the third one is just awakening and the fourth one is gaining strength. The resulting effects are dramatic; you can see how selected spots have changed in the course of one season.

Book Amazing Racers

Download or read book Amazing Racers written by Marc Bloom and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would one call taking teens with no evident running talent and putting them through breakneck training combined with mantras from the rock n' roll, techniques from Kenya, philosophy from Australia and turning them champions? Is it revolutionary? Or just plain crazy?Bill Aris has heard both, but one thing is indisputable. Everything Aris does with his runners—male and female—is new and extraordinary, and he has created a new American running dynasty. The runners of Fayetteville-Manlius High School, or F-M, have won the last nine out of ten national championships and have the best cumulative record in cross country history. F-M's domination has shocked the sport for its defiance of accepted running principles and limitations. One year, the girls defeated the 2nd-place team in the country by an average of 59 seconds per girl in a 5k race. Another year, the F-M girls’ ran faster than their Kenyan counterparts, who had come to Oregon as a showcase. Across the country, top coaches all whisper, “How do they do it?”From adopting long-forgotten Spartan creeds to focusing on teenaged developmental psychology and gender-blindness in training, The Running Revolutionaries is a a must read for millions of runners and the millions more who strive for better performance.

Book excerpt: The true story behind the acclaimed movie 12 Years a Slave, this book is based on the life of Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York who was captured in the United States and sold into slavery in Louisiana. Solomon Northup awoke in the middle of the night with his body trembling. Slowly, he realized that he was handcuffed in a dark room and his feet were chained to the floor. He managed to slip his hand into his pocket to look for his free papers that proved he was one of 400,000 free blacks in a nation where 2.5 million other African Americans were slaves. They were gone. This remarkable story follows Northup through his 12 years of bondage as a man kidnapped into slavery, enduring the hardships of slave life in Louisiana. But the tale also has a remarkable ending. Northup is rescued from his master's cotton plantation in the deep South by friends in New York. This is a compelling tale that looks into a little known slice of history, sure to rivet young readers and adults alike. National Geographic supports K-12 educators with ELA Common Core Resources. Book The Compleat Victory

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late summer and fall of 1777, after two years of indecisive fighting on both sides, the outcome of the American War of Independence hung in the balance. Having successfully expelled the Americans from Canada in 1776, the British were determined to end the rebellion the following year and devised what they believed a war-winning strategy, sending General John Burgoyne south to rout the Americans and take Albany. When British forces captured Fort Ticonderoga with unexpected ease in July of 1777, it looked as if it was a matter of time before they would break the rebellion in the North. Less than three and a half months later, however, a combination of the Continental Army and Militia forces, commanded by Major General Horatio Gates and inspired by the heroics of Benedict Arnold, forced Burgoyne to surrender his entire army. The American victory stunned the world and changed the course of the war. Kevin J. Weddle offers the most authoritative history of the Battle of Saratoga to date, explaining with verve and clarity why events unfolded the way they did. In the end, British plans were undone by a combination of distance, geography, logistics, and an underestimation of American leadership and fighting ability. Taking Ticonderoga had misled Burgoyne and his army into thinking victory was assured. Saratoga, which began as a British foraging expedition, turned into a rout. The outcome forced the British to rethink their strategy, inflamed public opinion in England against the war, boosted Patriot morale, and, perhaps most critical of all, led directly to the Franco-American alliance. Weddle unravels the web of contingencies and the play of personalities that ultimately led to what one American general called "the Compleat Victory."
