Book Piety and Responsibility

Download or read book Piety and Responsibility written by John N. Sheveland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the writings of Karl Rahner, Karl Barth, and Vedanta Desika to disclose how each construes "piety" and "responsibility" as integral to each other. Each theologian expresses a fundamental unity of love of God and love of neighbour. Sheveland explores this unity in ecumenical and interreligious frameworks, showing how these authors privilege theology as practice, enactment, or simply as ethical. He uses the Renaissance genre of musical polyphony as a methodological tool by which to explore the aesthetic quality and the similarity-in-difference of the theological voices being compared. Polyphony's application to comparative theology includes the avoidance of caricature, domestication, and antagonism. In place of these is offered a fundamentally aesthetic paradigm by which to hear theological voices in terms of their unity-in-distinction.

Book In Praise of Sw mi Ved nta De ika

Download or read book In Praise of Sw mi Ved nta De ika written by Gop& and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year is the 751th birth anniversary (1268 AD- 1369 AD) of the famous poet, philosopher and dialectical genius, Swāmi Vedānta Deśika. He lived for 101 years. By the age of 20 he became proficient in all branches of spiritual knowledge. He had mastered the Vedās, Śāstrās and Āgamās and the Divya Prabandhams of the Āzhwārs. His forte was logic, poetry and philosophy. He wrote extensively in Sanskrit, Tamizh, Prākrit and Manipravāla and composed numerous devotional hymns which reflected his poetic genius. He received the honorific titles of 'Vedāntācāryar" from Lord Rańganāthā and "Sarvatantra Swatantrar" from the Divine Mother Śrī Rańganāyaki. Swāmi Deśika was a polyglot and an author of 166 granthās. Besides strengthening and further propagating the Viśișhtādvaitic philosophy of Śrī Rāmānuja, he established beyond any doubt the doctrine of Prapatti (self surrender) as the guaranteed route to mōkșa (liberation). This book is a translation of 73 verses composed in Sanskrit by Prativādi Bhayańkaram Aņņangarācāryār Swāmi (Aņņan) who was the disciple of Nāyanārācāryār, son of Swāmi Deśika. This ode on Swāmi Vedānta Deśika contains what needs to been known about Swāmi Deśika's greatness, the depth of meaning in his works, the faith in him of his devotees and efforts made by his opponents to demean him which boomeranged and put such people to shame. Some of the great Ācāryās who came after Swāmi Deśika quoted several verses from 'Saptati Ratnamalika' in their writings and thus gave it a pride of place among other literary works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For my Blemishless Lord presents the text and translation of the exquisite poem Amalaṉ Āti Pirāṉ by Tiruppāṇ Āḻvār, which is part of the Śrīvaiṣṇava canon, the Nālāyira Divya Prabandham (6th – 9th centuries CE), together with the three Śrīvaiṣṇava commentaries in Tamil-Sanskrit Manipravalam (13th – 14th centuries) by key figures in the medieval religious history of South Asia, namely, Periyavāccāṉ Piḷḷai, Aḻakiya Maṇavāḷa Perumāḷ Nāyaṉār, and Vedānta Deśikaṉ. Offering the first fully annotated, complete translation of these exegetical writings, this volume analyses the language, commentary techniques, and theological positions of the commentators. Looking also at cultural, religious, and other allusions made by them, it places them in their literary, social, and religious backgrounds during a period of budding dissent within the Śrīvaiṣṇava community, to which they contributed at least in part. This rich resource is made available in English for the first time for students of Tamil and Manipravala, theology, religious history, and philology.

Book Karl Barth and Comparative Theology

Download or read book Karl Barth and Comparative Theology written by Martha L. Moore-Keish and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on recent engagements with Barth in the area of theologies of religion, Karl Barth and Comparative Theology inaugurates a new conversation between Barth’s theology and comparative theology. Each essay brings Barth into conversation with theological claims from other religious traditions for the purpose of modeling deep learning across religious borders from a Barthian perspective. For each tradition, two Barth-influenced theologians offer focused engagements of Barth with the tradition’s respective themes and figures, and a response from a theologian from that tradition then follows. With these surprising and stirringly creative exchanges, Karl Barth and Comparative Theology promises to open up new trajectories for comparative theology. Contributors: Chris Boesel, Francis X.
