Book Santa Fe Dreamhouse

Download or read book Santa Fe Dreamhouse written by Reed Stevens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-12-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I came to Santa Fe straight from the 1952 Roy Rogers matinee in East Hampton, Connecticut. That and a 1982 New York Times travel article about Chaco Canyon. Like Lewis and Clark with a U-Haul, Reed and Jim leave Philadelphia and head to Santa Fe, New Mexico to establish a new home. With their knack for renovating, Reed and Jim purchase an old adobe, and then face the challenges of making their dream inhabitable. Here you'll find the joys, the trials-the costs!-of fixing up the old mud house, buying horses, and attempting to be good citizens. Everyday happenings, such as running for city council, tutoring ESL students, and real estate sales teach them lessons about a Santa Fe that tourists do not see. Fascinated with Santa Fe's history, the pair becomes involved in the lives of fascinating people who come to Santa Fe, and sometimes leave it, seeking the magic the old city offers. When their money runs low, they learn to survive where jobs are as scarce as desert water. Over their ten years in the Land of Enchantment, Reed and Jim find their wounds heal and their romance thrives. Immerse yourself in the adventures of strangers who come to a strange and beautiful land to renovate a dilapidated house. If you have dreamed of starting over, Santa Fe Dreamhouse is the unforgettable place to begin.

Book The Santa Fe House

Download or read book The Santa Fe House written by Margaret Moore Booker and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first book to survey the historic architectural styles in Santa Fe from the seventeenth through the mid-twentieth centuries, The Santa Fe House presents in detail forty architecturally rich and picturesque houses, from the earliest one-story adobe structures, with flat roofs and an emphasis on utility and simplicity, to homes of today's "Santa Fe style," showing deep roots in Pueblo Indian, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo traditions. When New Mexico was claimed for the United States in 1846 newcomers gradually added decorative elements from back east, creating a simplified version of the Greek revival style, known locally as the "Territorial style." The advent of the railroad brought a variety of ornate Victorian architectural styles, and when New Mexico achieved statehood in 1912, business and political leaders in Santa Fe boosted tourism by promoting its "Spanish-Pueblo Revival style" of architecture, which was based on the remaining Spanish- and Mexican-era buildings and nearby Pueblo villages." "All-new color photographs show Santa Fe's most beautiful houses as they have been carefully preserved today. With historic black and white images, maps, drawings, and other original illustrations that further enhance the architectural story of this hugely popular destination, this book is perfect for the tourists who flock to Santa Fe and to homeowners who covet the enduring adobe house style." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description: In his last book about vacation misadventures, Travels with Anne, Stuart Anderson won our sympathy by describing his experiences, in remote corners of the world, with broken-down vehicles, clueless guides, unbearable traveling companions, miserable weather, and decidedly uncooperative wildlife. Unfortunately for Stuart, his new book, Who Picked This Place?, makes it plain that he did not learn a thing from those experiences. Thus, in Who Picked This Place?, we get to follow Stuart to unlikely vacation destinations across the world, and laugh out loud as: Stuart and his bird-crazy companion, Anne, tour the Yucatan Peninsula and discover biting ants, angry monkeys, and the advisability of making sure the lid of that whiskey flask, in your luggage, is screwed on tight. Stuart and Anne decide to vacation, for some inexplicable reason, in Mexicos most politically unstable state, Chiapas. While there, they try mightily to sweat themselves to death climbing Maya pyramids. They also go to church with a bunch of drunks who mark the occasion by chopping the heads off chickens. In Belize, Stuart and Anne canoe a jungle river in the rainwhich turns out to be the prelude to a later adventure that involves traveling over miles of ocean, in a small boat, in a much bigger rain. In Belize, also, Stuart and Anne have a guide who is less interested in guiding than in hitting on all the available (and some of the unavailable) local women. That may explain why Stuart and Anne sometimes find themselves lost. Anne wants to see polar bears in the wild, so she and Stuart go to a lodge on northern Hudson Bay that is miles and miles from nowhere. At the lodge, they share a cabin with the worlds most obnoxious photographer, and also with an elderly woman who has difficulties using the bathroom. All of them see polar bears way too close. Annes dad goes with Stuart and Anne to Kenya, on a photographic safari. Annes dad, unfortunately, tends to stray from camp on foot and alone, into country inhabited by leopards and lions. He also tends to fall asleep in his dinner. Not wanting to be outdone by Annes dad, in Kenyan shenanigans, Stuart gets himself mistaken for a CIA agent, by some locals who try to recruit Stuart (the CIA agent) to murder one of their neighbors. Stuart and Anne go off to southeastern Turkey, even though southeastern Turkey borders on places like Iran, Iraq, and Syria. All of their friends think that Stuart and Anne are crazy. The two survive the trip very well, despite the inconveniences of stopped-up toilets, 120-degree heat, and cave hotels. In Panama, Stuart and Anne get sick, celebrate the New Year with forty aggressive Pakistanis, and go bird-watching with a guide who doesnt speak any English and doesnt know anything about birds. Youll laugh, youll cry, as you share these and other adventures, on four continents, with the dauntless Stuart and Anne. And, like them, you will often find yourself asking a question that, for one or both of the books two protagonists, probably has an embarrassing answer: Who Picked This Place?

Book House of Houses

Download or read book House of Houses written by Pat Mora and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2008-10-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining poetic language and the traditions of magic realism to paint a vivid portrait of her family, Pat MoraÕs House of Houses is an unconventional memoir that reads as if every member, death notwithstanding, is in one room talking, laughing, and crying. In a salute to the Day of the Dead, the story begins with a visit to the cemetery in which all of her deceased relatives come alive to share stories of the family, literally bringing the food to their own funerals. From there the book covers a year in the life of her clan, revealing the personalities and events that Mora herself so desperately yearns to know and understand. ÒPoet MoraÕs complex and dramatic family history comprises more than personal reminiscences: it also embraces resonant aspects of Mexican American history. Mora recounts her familyÕs traumatic exodus from Mexico to escape the violence of Pancho Villa and his forces and their struggles to begin new lives in another country. To anchor her psychologically rich, dramatic, sometimes funny, often touching multigenerational tale, Mora uses the image of a houseÑthe house of housesÑduring a single year, a fruitful metaphor that allows her to dwell on the bright beauty of flowers, birds, and trees, emblems of the loving legacy of her nurturing family.ÓÑBooklist ÒMora has created an ingenious structure for these recollections of her extended family, of their lives and the tales they share about the familyÕs history. Woven in with these memories are recipes, fragments of songs and poetry, folk remedies, and jokes, all of the small matters that most reveal a familyÕs identity. In a language deftly mingling the natural cadences of speech and precise, poetic imagery, Mora believably summons up both a group of tough, loving, idiosyncratic survivors and a vivid, detailed portrait of life in the Southwest in [the last] century.Ó ÑKirkus Reviews
