Book excerpt: "This engaging tale of the accidental meeting of two strangers on the Sanibel fishing pier has touched the hearts of thousands. Carl Johnson, a wise, retired fishing guide from Sanibel, and Richard Evans, a young, stressed-out divorce attorney from Peoria, share more than snook runs and cold Cokes during their six mornings together. They share tales of love, suicide and heroism. This story is about knowing when it's time to die and when it's time to start living again. It is about something rare in this hurried age: wisdom."--

Download or read book Alligator in the Sky written by Joseph Pacheco and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epilogue Turning left on Dixie Beach Road the night after Hurricane Jeanne sideswiped us, I caught a mournful moon peeking at me above her veil of remnant hurricane cloud, wanting to share my loss of island- afraid to commit that indiscretion. 'Hipster poet, nature poet, prankster poet, oracular poet, Nuyorican and political poet, Joseph Pacheco proves his mettle as a versifying technician, whether it's in his own brand of bebop free verse or funk-a-fortified rap, which reminds us that poetry is a pleasure, after all. It is no surprise that these highly accessible poems have been projected nationally over the airwaves on National Public Radio. I like to think that these radio signals are forever shooting outward Pacheco's poems into deep space. If we are lucky, the signal may be picked up by radio telescopes on some Planet X, and those heavenly aliens will then have some of our capacity for wonderment, joy, and love. For those of us who live in Florida, which is America concentrate, we are especially in need of poets as irreverent and wise as Joe Pacheco."-James Brock

Download or read book Memories written by Tanya Hochschild and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanya Hochschild spent her childhood in Johannesburg, South Africa. Johannesburg was a beautiful place, filled with the wonders of nature, wildlife, and family. Yet Hochschild's young life was not always filled with beauty and joy; some days were rife with sorrows, much too difficult for a small child to bear alone. Since that time, Hochschild has found a way to channel both her joys and her sorrows into the written word, as collected in Memories: A Collection of Poems and Essays. Separated into Books I and II, the first section consists of Hochschild's poetry, encompassing moments experienced and wonders unveiled; the second section is a memoir of her childhood in South Africa. Hochschild goes back to a foggy morning by the Namib Desert in "A Drop of Fog." She daydreams about the owners of a silver spoon on the side of the African road in "Running Away with the Spoon." She recalls childhood piano lessons and even her first infatuation, and she does it with humility and poise. Memories offers a recollection of a life passed in a faraway, faded place, bringing the past into the present.

Book excerpt: What is poetry? This question invites the reader to enter this collection of poems. Within is an array of free-verse offerings covering a range of themes—a would-be poet’s dawdling (“Confessions of a Procrastinator”), the fading of summer (“Vestiges”), the ongoing war in Syria (“I Am Omran”), a mysterious drowning (“The Silent River”), the frustration of mediocre golf skills (“On the Cusp”), the fanciful account of a new home for mankind (“Eden Revisited”), a self-ordained preacher’s quest to save his best friend’s soul, mini episodes on the realities, contrasts, and ironies of life (“The World According to Fedley Tresh and Charley Cain”), impressions at a poetry reading (“Poetry Reading at the Bookstore”), remembering Mary Oliver (“When a Poet Dies”), and dozens of others, hopefully something for everyone. “If There Were No Poetry” concludes the collection and poses the question, Who would we be and how would we be if there were no poetry?

Download or read book The Complete Poems of Louis Daniel Brodsky Volume Three 1976 1980 written by Louis Daniel Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of The Complete Poems of Louis Daniel Brodsky presents over seven hundred poems, written from July 1976 through December 1980. By this period in his life, Brodsky had a wife and two children, a thriving business that kept him traveling, and a passion for acquiring Faulkneriana, sparked by his deep appreciation of the author's literature, that had led him on increasingly frequent journeys to Oxford, Mississippi, and elsewhere, to meet those who knew Faulkner and those who might supplement Brodsky's expanding collection. Spending considerably more time away from home than ever before, he began to compose most of his poems while driving, eating in small-town caf , staying in motels, and retreating to bars after twelve-hour workdays, always filling his omnipresent notebook with new images and metaphors. It was during these trips that Brodsky conceived many of his poetic personae: Willy Sypher, the Jewish ragman road peddler; a man who, though he lost no family in it, still feels he's a victim of the Holocaust; the Northern outlander, who appears in many of his "Southern" poems; the nature poet, who captures the beauty of rural America, and the cynical city poet, who observes its bigotry and vulgarity; and the unhappy family man, who feels he must escape home, for the freedom of the open road, but nevertheless suffers guilt and remorse. The poems from this segment of Brodsky's literary career reflect a man, in his mid and late thirties, facing growing desperation as he attempts to fulfill the complex responsibilities of his day-to-day commitments and yet address an unrelenting compulsion to record his frenetic life, in verse.
