Book excerpt: Folktales teach, inform, and heal. Most of all, they entertain. Here's a collection of tales rich with homespun humor, charm, and wisdom--all told with flair by some of Florida's best and most sought-after storytellers. Their stories will make you feel part of the great "family" that is Florida. If it's spooky ghost stories you crave, let "The Silent Customer," "Kissimmee Bound," and "The Ghost Dog of the Biltmore" chill your spine. Heed the Cracker wisdom handed down in "Seek the Higher Ground," cow-hunter poetry with a message. Chuckle over the misadventures of Flossie, Bubba, and Flo in "Three Little Cracker Pigs," a tongue-in-cheek version of the classic children's tale. Test your wits against the little troll in "Angelina and Cigam." Will he have you running in circles, growing smaller with each snap of his fingers? Take "Cousin Cassie's Cookin" with a grain of salt. It's not true, of course. Then again, if Cassie asks you to dinner, say you have other plans. Many Indian legends attempt to explain why the world exists as it is. In this tradition, several tales target specific flukes of nature--the rabbit's short tail, the flamingo's long neck, the woodpecker's lack of song--and offer entertaining reasons for their existence. Discover these legends too: "The Devil's Millhopper," "The Legend of Lake Okeechobee," "Monkey, the Trickster," "Why Florida Key Deer Are So Small." A few history lessons never hurt anyone, and these are entertaining as well. Jonathan Dickinson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Jake Summerlin have a thing or two to teach you about overcoming adversity and being resourceful. Settle back into your easy chair and let these tales entertain you.

Book The Weight of Sand

Download or read book The Weight of Sand written by Edith Blais and published by Greystone Books Ltd. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radiant, unforgettable memoir of one woman’s 450 days spent in captivity, and her defiant refusal to have her humanity stripped away. When Edith meets Luca in a small Northern town, the two connect instantly. Under the Northern Lights, they develop a deep friendship over their shared passions: travel, living off the land, a bohemian life. In search of wanderlust, they embark on an epic road trip from Italy to Togo, where they will join their friend’s sustainable farming project. Upon arriving on the African continent, they change their itinerary and drive through Africa’s Sahel region, a haven for militant groups, where they are surrounded and captured. Little was known about Edith’s and Luca’s fate until they reappeared in Mali more than one year later, having mysteriously escaped their captors. Now, Edith shares her harrowing story with the world for the first time—complete with the poems that became a lifeline for her in captivity, which she wrote in secret with a pen borrowed from another hostage. Against the stunning but cruel backdrop of the desert, Edith recounts her months as a hostage: the oppressive heat, violent sandstorms, constant relocations, hunger strikes, and her eventual heart-pounding escape. Separated from Luca early on, she finds solidarity and comfort with a group of other female hostages, who lend her a pen to write poetry, a creative outlet that helps save her life. Edith is steadfast in her will to remain sane: she reveals her dedication to her art, and her striking ability to unsettle her captors and identify their vulnerabilities. A compelling descent into a strange, brutal universe, The Weight of Sand is ultimately a life-affirming book and a poetic celebration of one woman’s resilience.

Book Hydrosystems Engineering and Management

Download or read book Hydrosystems Engineering and Management written by Larry W. Mays and published by Water Resources Publication. This book was released on 2002 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to be a textbook for students of water resources engineering and management. It is an introduction to methods used in hydrosystems for upper level undergraduate and graduate students. The material can be presented to students with no background in operations research and with only an undergraduate background in hydrology and hydraulics. A major focus is to bring together the use of economics, operations research, probability and statistics with the use of hydrology, hydraulics, and water resources for the analysis, design, operation, and management of various types of water projects. This book is an excellent reference for engineers, water resource planners, water resource systems analysts, and water managers. This book is concerned with the mathematical modeling of problems in water project design, analysis, operation, and management. The quantitative methods include: (a) the simulation of various hydrologic and hydraulic processes; (b) the use of operations research, probability and statistics, and economics. Rarely have these methods been integrated in a systematic framework in a single book like Hydrosystems Engineering and Management. An extensive number of example problems are presented for ease in understanding the material. In addition, a large number of end-of-chapter problems are provided for use in homework assignments.

Book Native American Legends An Anthology Of The Hopi Indians

Download or read book Native American Legends An Anthology Of The Hopi Indians written by G.W. Mullins and published by Light Of The Moon Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American Indian culture is known for its rich oral traditions. In many cases there were no written languages to document their histories. The tribes relied on verbal communication to share their customs, history, rituals and legends. The tribal elders used vibrant tales to pass information to the younger generations. These stories were not only related to tribal history but were meant to entertain as well as educate, while preserving their tribal culture. Each time an elder told a story, new life was breathed into it. The telling of the stories gave a revived meaning to the tribe's past and their relations to the earth and the animals they had depended on for existence. In many cases when the stories were told, they were accompanied by music. Drums and rhythm were paired with dance to create a visual record. The Hopi Indians culture was and is rich with these stories. With a past stretching back thousands of years, they are one of the oldest living cultures in documented history. The tribe's teachings relate stories of a great flood and other events dating to ancient times. The Hopi trace their ancestry back to the Ancient Puebloan and Basketmaker cultures. They were responsible for many stone structures and artifacts of the Grand Canyon and across the Southwest. A deeply religious people, they live by the ethic of peace and goodwill. There was a time in Hopi history that when crops were harvested, religious ceremonies had been performed, and the winter wood had been collected. It was at this time that the people broke out into dance and story-telling. It was a time of sharing a rich history. With this book, that time is now. Included in this book, is a huge collection of the stories of the Hopi Indians. Without books and without writing the Hopi have an extensive literature. These stories have been collected with the main purpose of preserving the ancient stories of Native American life. Over the years, many collectors have recorded several versions of some of these tales. So keep in mind there is some variation to what has been collected. You are invited to enjoy the culture and as in true Native tradition, share these stories with the next generation.
