Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to determine the Federal interest in participating in the cost of placing suitable material from Thimble Shoal Channel and/or Atlantic Ocean Channel ... on the beach at Sandbridge in Virginia Beach rather than depositing it in an offshore disposal area. The evaluation report will consider only that material to be provided from the 55-foot-deep outbound channel which is part of the Norfolk Harbor and Channels, Virginia, project."--Page 1.

Book Software Defined Radio

Download or read book Software Defined Radio written by Walter H.W. Tuttlebee and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-02-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impending advent of GSM in the early 1990s triggered massive investment that revolutionised the capability of DSP technology. A decade later, the vastly increased processing requirements and potential market of 3G has triggered a similar revolution, with a host of start-up companies claiming revolutionary technologies hoping to challenge and displace incumbent suppliers. This book, with contributions from today's major players and leading start-ups, comprehensively describes both the new approaches and the responses of the incumbents, with detailed descriptions of the design philosophy, architecture, technology maturity and software support. Analysis of SDR baseband processing requirements of cellular handsets and basestations 3G handset baseband - ASIC, DSP, parallel processing, ACM and customised programmable architectures 3G basestation baseband - DSP (including co-processors), FPGA-based approaches, reconfigurable and parallel architectures Architecture optimisation to match 3G air interface and application algorithms Evolution of existing DSP, ASIC & FPGA solutions Assessment of the architectural approaches and the implications of the trends. An essential resource for the 3G product designer, who needs to understand immediate design options within a wider context of future product roadmaps, the book will also benefit researchers and commercial managers who need to understand this rapid evolution of baseband signal processing and its industry impact.

Book Embedded Multiprocessors

Download or read book Embedded Multiprocessors written by Sundararajan Sriram and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques for Optimizing Multiprocessor Implementations of Signal Processing Applications An indispensable component of the information age, signal processing is embedded in a variety of consumer devices, including cell phones and digital television, as well as in communication infrastructure, such as media servers and cellular base stations. Multiple programmable processors, along with custom hardware running in parallel, are needed to achieve the computation throughput required of such applications. Reviews important research in key areas related to the multiprocessor implementation of multimedia systems Embedded Multiprocessors: Scheduling and Synchronization, Second Edition presents architectures and design methodologies for parallel systems in embedded digital signal processing (DSP) applications. It discusses application modeling techniques for multimedia systems, the incorporation of interprocessor communication costs into multiprocessor scheduling decisions, and a modeling methodology (the synchronization graph) for multiprocessor system performance analysis. The book also applies the synchronization graph model to develop hardware and software optimizations that can significantly reduce the interprocessor communication overhead of a given schedule. Chronicles recent activity dealing with single-chip multiprocessors and dataflow models This edition updates the background material on existing embedded multiprocessors, including single-chip multiprocessors. It also summarizes the new research on dataflow models for signal processing that has been carried out since the publication of the first edition. Harness the power of multiprocessors This book explores the optimization of interprocessor communication and synchronization in embedded multiprocessor systems. It shows you how to design multiprocessor computer systems that are streamlined for multimedia applications.

Book excerpt: The SAMOS workshop is an international gathering of highly quali?ed researchers from academia and industry, sharing in a 3-day lively discussion on the quiet and - spiring northern mountainside of the Mediterranean island of Samos. As a tradition, the workshop features workshop presentations in the morning, while after lunch all kinds of informal discussions and nut-cracking gatherings take place. The workshop is unique in the sense that not only solved research problems are presented and discussed but also (partly) unsolved problems and in-depth topical reviews can be unleashed in the sci- ti?c arena. Consequently, the workshop provides the participants with an environment where collaboration rather than competition is fostered. The earlier workshops, SAMOS I–IV (2001–2004), were composed only of invited presentations. Due to increasing expressions of interest in the workshop, the Program Committee of SAMOS V decided to open the workshop for all submissions. As a result the SAMOS workshop gained an immediate popularity; a total of 114 submitted papers were received for evaluation. The papers came from 24 countries and regions: Austria (1), Belgium (2), Brazil (5), Canada (4), China (12), Cyprus (2), Czech Republic (1), Finland (15), France (6), Germany (8), Greece (5), Hong Kong (2), India (2), Iran (1), Korea (24), The Netherlands (7), Pakistan (1), Poland (2), Spain (2), Sweden (2), T- wan (1), Turkey (2), UK (2), and USA (5). We are grateful to all of the authors who submitted papers to the workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few aspects of American military history have been as vigorously debated as Harry Truman's decision to use atomic bombs against Japan. In this carefully crafted volume, Michael Kort describes the wartime circumstances and thinking that form the context for the decision to use these weapons, surveys the major debates related to that decision, and provides a comprehensive collection of key primary source documents that illuminate the behavior of the United States and Japan during the closing days of World War II. Kort opens with a summary of the debate over Hiroshima as it has evolved since 1945. He then provides a historical overview of thye events in question, beginning with the decision and program to build the atomic bomb. Detailing the sequence of events leading to Japan's surrender, he revisits the decisive battles of the Pacific War and the motivations of American and Japanese leaders. Finally, Kort examines ten key issues in the discussion of Hiroshima and guides readers to relevant primary source documents, scholarly books, and articles.

Book Living by the Rules of the Sea

Download or read book Living by the Rules of the Sea written by David M. Bush and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living by the Rules of the Sea is a primer for people living along the nation's coastlines, those considering moving to the coast, or those who want a greater understanding of the risks and dangers posed by living at the seacoast. Published as part of Duke University Press's Living with the Shore series, but without a direct focus on the coastline of one particular state, this book is intended as an overall guide to coastal physical processes, risk assessment of potential property damage from coastal natural hazards, and property damage mitigation. Over the past twenty years, the authors have mapped and studied most of the barrier islands in the United States and have experienced coastal processes such as storms and shoreline retreat at close range. They represent a coastal geology/oceanographic perspective that is decidedly in favor of preserving the natural protective capabilities of the native coastal environment. While strongly anti-engineering in outlook, Living by the Rules of the Sea does provide a review of coastal engineering techniques. It also examines methods of repairing damage to the natural environment that lessen the prospect of further property damage. Finally, it employs a more inclusive "coastal zone" approach rather than simply concentrating on a more narrowly defined shoreline. Barrier islands are viewed as part of a larger system in which changes in one part of the system--for example, the mining of sand dunes or dredging offshore for beach replenishment sand--can have profound effects on another part of the system, predictable effects even though they may not be visible for years or decades. A comprehensive handbook with references to recent storms including hurricanes Andrew, Gilbert, Hugo, Emily, and Opal, Living by the Rules of the Sea is designed to help people make better and more informed choices about where or if to live at the coast.
