Book excerpt: San Francisco Bay Striper is a regional how-to book for catching one of our most popular game fish the striped bass. Basically the book follows the spring, summer, and fall migration of the striped bass throughout San Francisco Bay and our coastal zones from Marin to Half Moon Bay. For each local it covers the popular angling methods for taking these fish which can range from live bait fishing, casting from shore, boat trolling, and fly fishing. Although the striped bass populations have fluctuated dramatically since the books publication in 1983, and Fish & Game regulations regarding size and limits have changed for this fish, nevertheless the how-to techniques for catching striped bass still apply for the present. Also my brother Angelo and I have decided to put the book out for nostalgic reasons to give new readers a glimpse of what striper fishing was like in the past. Enjoy.

Book Saltwater Fly Fishing

Download or read book Saltwater Fly Fishing written by Jack Samson and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book not only brings us up to date on the latest in rods, reels, fly lines, leaders, and flies but also makes simple the formerly complicated world of knots for the saltwater fly rodder. In addition, author Jack Samson covers the history of saltwater fly fishing from its beginnings in nineteenth-century England to the present day. But it is the exciting narrative tales of fly fishing -- from bonefish in the Bahamas and Florida Keys to sailfish and marlin from Venezuela to Australia -- that set this exceptional book apart from others in the field. Samson tells us how it feels to take the world-record roosterfish (31 pounds 12 ounces) on a fly in Costa Rica, or to battle a black marlin on a fly rod in heavy seas off Cape Bowling Green, Australia.

Book Striper Wars

  • Author : Dick Russell
  • Publisher : Island Press
  • Release : 2013-02-22

Download or read book Striper Wars written by Dick Russell and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-02-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When populations of striped bass began plummeting in the early 1980s, author and fisherman Dick Russell was there to lead an Atlantic coast conservation campaign that resulted in one of the most remarkable wildlife comebacks in the history of fisheries. As any avid fisherman will tell you, the striped bass has long been a favorite at the American dinner table; in fact, we've been feasting on the fish from the time of the Pilgrims. By 1980 that feasting had turned to overfishing by commercial fishing interests. Striper Wars is Dick Russell's inspiring account of the people and events responsible for the successful preservation of one of America's favorite fish and of what has happened since. Striper Wars is a tale replete with heroes--and some villains--as the struggle to save the striper migrated down the coast from Massachusetts to Maryland. Russell introduces us to a postman at arms against a burly trap-net fisherman, a renowned state governor caving to special interests, and a fishing-tackle maker fighting alongside marine biologists. And he describes how champions of this singular fish blocked power plants and New York's Westway Project that would otherwise compromise its habitat. Unfortunately, those who cheered the triumphant ending to the campaign, as the coastal states enacted measures that enabled the striped bass to make its comeback, have found the peace transitory--there is now a new enemy emerging on the front. In recent years a chronic bacterial disease has struck more than seventy percent of the striped bass population in the primary spawning waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Malnutrition seems to be a significant factor, brought on by the same overfishing that plagued the bass in the first battle--only this time, the overfishing is devastating menhaden, the silvery little fish upon which the bass feed. Lessons learned during the first conservation battle are being applied here, highlighting a need for a whole new ecosystem-based approach to conserving species. Only with constant vigilance by concerned citizens, Dick Russell reminds us, can environmental victories be sustained. This particular fish story is a personal one for him, and he follows the striper's saga today all the way to California, where the fish was introduced in 1879 and where agribusiness now threatens its future. For his conservation work during the 1980s Russell received a citizen's Chevron Conservation Award.

Book excerpt: The story says that one day a Fisher King will rise to heal the land. In the 1950s, they’re still waiting. . . . “A captivating historical thriller, a great spine-tingling romp through history in search of the Holy Grail. Fans of The Da Vinci Code will love this!”—Kevin Baker, author of Dreamland and Paradise Alley At the turn of the twentieth century, a baseball player named George Gibson embarks upon a mystical journey to the Congo. His mission: to shepherd a powerful relic to its home in Abyssinia. But poet-turned-grail seeker Arthur Rimbaud is after what Gibson possesses—as others before him have been for millennia. A half century later, after receiving an honorable discharge from the Korean War, twenty-year-old Lance Porter vows to put his civilian life back together—which means heading to commie-infested Berkeley to see his high school sweetheart, Ellie. But after Lance gets cold feet, he encounters instead a drunk, gay poet named Jack Spicer, who spews crazy stories about Lance being the Fisher King. It appears that the bearing of the grail has been bequeathed to young Lance, much to his shock and disbelief. Can a legacy born in the deserts of Ethiopia truly be reemerging in the bohemian bars of New York City and San Francisco? And is a vet with a lost soul really worthy of its care? Alexander C. Irvine has breathed a refreshing burst of air into the Arthurian legend. In One King, One Soldier, ancient characters and Irvine’s pitch-perfect historical accuracy merge with a gritty, dark portrait of America in the cold-war ’50s. Here, three stories come brilliantly together in an edgy mix of baseball, imperialism, poetry, and grail mythology.

Book Neon Girls

Download or read book Neon Girls written by Jennifer Worley and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NPR's Best Books of 2020 "Galvanizing and urgent....a slice of queer urban history and a necessary rethinking of sex work as a site of collective labor struggle." –National Public Radio A riveting true story of a young woman’s days stripping in grunge-era San Francisco where a radical group of dancers banded together to unionize and run the club on their own terms. When graduate student Jenny Worley needed a fast way to earn more money, she found herself at the door of the Lusty Lady Theater in San Francisco, auditioning on a stage surrounded by mirrors, in platform heels, and not much else. So began Jenny’s career as a stripper strutting the peepshow stage as her alter-ego “Polly” alongside women called Octopussy and Amnesia. But this wasn’t your run-of-the-mill strip club—it was a peepshow populated by free-thinking women who talked feminist theory and swapped radical zines like lipstick. As management’s discriminatory practices and the rise of hidden cameras stir up tension among the dancers, Jenny rallies them to demand change. Together, they organize the first strippers’ union in the world and risk it all to take over the club and run it as a co-operative. Refusing to be treated as sex objects or disposable labor, they become instead the rulers of their kingdom. Jenny’s elation over the Lusty Lady’s revolution is tempered by her evolving understanding of the toll dancing has taken on her. When she finally hangs up her heels for good to finish her Ph.D., neither Jenny nor San Francisco are the same—but she and the cadre of wild, beautiful, brave women who run the Lusty Lady come out on top despite it all. A first-hand account as only an insider could tell it, Neon Girls paints a vivid picture of a bygone San Francisco and a fiercely feminist world within the sex industry, asking sharp questions about what keeps women from fighting for their rights, who benefits from capitalizing on desire, and how we can change entrenched systems of power.
