Book San Antonio s Historic Market Square

Download or read book San Antonio s Historic Market Square written by Edna Campos Gravenhorst and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Antonio was founded in 1718. By 1730, the viceroy of New Spain had issued orders to map plazas, squares, and parks for the Canary Islanders who would be arriving in 1731. The plazas with their markets became the centers for business and entertainment. The first square was Plaza de Armas (Military Plaza); when the islanders arrived, they marked off the Plaza de las Islas (Main Plaza). Before the Civil War, Alamo Plaza was the center of commerce. As San Antonio grew, the markets needed to relocate. The construction of Municipal Market began in 1899. This market house, built in Paschal Square, was demolished in the 1930s, but the Municipal Market Annex, constructed in the 1920s, survived. The annex buildings would become El Mercado and Centro de Artes. In the 1970s, a permanent building for the farmers market was built in Hay Market Plaza. Today, these buildings, along with the historic buildings in the area, are known as Market Square.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Antonio, City for a King takes us on an extraordinary adventure through an amazingly unknown, yet expectantly fitting, piece of Texas' origins. We learn how 16 families from Iberia's Canary Islands answered their monarch's call to populate a desolate northeast area of his New Spain for a strategic political reason. There was the year-long journey: crossing the Atlantic and then trekking north over present-day Mexico to Bejar. We see how these people initiated the township of San Fernando, guided its growth for generations and helped form many Texas traditions. And we follow their descendants through the town's evolution, through two rebellions, three changes of patriotism and one name change...to San Antonio.

Book excerpt: “The San Antonio Story a pictorial and entertaining commentary on the growth and development of San Antonio, Texas his is a story that will surprise you. Nationally acclaimed author T R. Fehrenbach has written an honest and open perspective of San Antonio de Padua, the first time such a history has been published. Not many American cities can claim the age, or the romantic heritage, of San Antonio. None can claim to be similar to this enigmatic and contemporary Texas city which historically has enjoyed notable progress in its own slow-paced manner. ” Within these pages is one of the most colorful and conquest filled histories any city has ever known, from the summer of 1691 when Spanish soldiers and priests found its environs “the most beautiful in New Spain". To the fitful beginnings of the early missions. . .to the devastation of plagues and the frustrations of conquering heroes. . .to the hard riding Comanches who terrorized San Antonio villagers from the high buffalo plains of West Texas. . .the beginnings were rugged and charged with destiny. You can gain a new perspective of the events which led to that historic last stand at the Alamo, an epochal place in the War of Independence with Mexico.. .how San Antonio made the Colt revolver famous. . .how Teddy Roosevelt bellied up to the Menger bar and recruited his Roughriders. _ .how the military came to town and stayed. . .how a river which was nearly paved over became a shining spot in San Antonio’s downtown. . .and how a city with passion and perseverance has developed into what O. Henry called one of America’s four unique cities.

Download or read book Queen of the West written by Richard Bruce Winders and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1850, the frontier settlement of San Antonio had seen more than its share of hardships, Indians attacks, rebellions, and repeated military occupations. These events all marked the towns recent past. In 1854, though, the editor of the Alamo Star felt confident enough in the town’s progress to announce that the embattled outpost would soon be known as the “Queen of the West.” The Star, of course, capitalized on the name of the town’s most famous landmark—the Alamo. Although historians have written about the battle and the town, no one has yet adequately explained how they are connected to each other. A deeper look at the development of San Antonio shows that it was not only the site of the Battle of the Alamo, it was the center of much of the history of Spain, Mexico, Texas, and the United States. Queen of the West: A Documentary History of San Antonio, 1718–1900 takes readers through a series of important writings detailing how San Antonio transformed from an important but threatened outpost to a thriving Edwardian city. The author, Richard Bruce Winders, provides an introduction to each eye-witness account providing diverse perspectives on the history of San Antonio by the people who actually lived it. The author is an internationally noted authority on the topic of the Alamo. The work will be a valuable resource for students of history and teachers. The book draws together a body of work that readers would have a difficult time finding on their own. The cover art is by noted artist Don Yena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2019 Summerfield G. Robert Award, sponsored by The Sons of the Republic of Texas Faces of Béxar showcases the finest work of Jesús F. de la Teja, a foremost authority on Spanish colonial Mexico and Texas through the Republic. These essays trace the arc of the author’s career over a quarter of a century. A new bibliographic essay on early San Antonio and Texas history rounds out the collection, showing where Tejano history has been, is now, and where it might go in the future. For de la Teja, the Tejano experience in San Antonio is a case study of a community in transition, one moved by forces within and without. From its beginnings as an imperial outpost to becoming the center of another, newer empire—itself in transition—the social, political, and military history of San Antonio was central to Texas history, to say nothing of the larger contexts of Mexican and American history. Faces of Béxar explores this and more, including San Antonio's origins as a military settlement, the community's economic ties to Saltillo, its role in the fight for Mexican independence, and the motivations of Tejanos for joining Anglo Texans in the struggle for independence. Taken together, Faces of Béxar stands to be a milestone in the growing literature on Tejano history.

Book San Antonio s Historic Architecture

Download or read book San Antonio s Historic Architecture written by T. Irwin Sessions and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish colonial missionary settlements established San Antonio as a junction between Mexico and the developing United States in the early 1700s. Because of its remote location amid both countries and its great distance from other cities, San Antonio became a crossroads for commerce, industry, and strategic military position on the wild frontier. Texas independence and the admission of Texas into the United States in the 19th century established a diverse cultural population and distinctive architecture that remains historically significant across the nation as it continues to gain attention on the world stage. The appreciation of historic architecture among its citizens has enabled San Antonio to retain a remarkably large catalog of important historic structures, which are often saved from destruction through relocation. Three centuries of steady growth, from 1700 to 2000, has resulted in an abundance of buildings that has generated a local legacy of multigenerational artisans and skilled craftsmen.
