Book Paradise Regained Samson Agonistes and the Complete Shorter Poems

Download or read book Paradise Regained Samson Agonistes and the Complete Shorter Poems written by John Milton and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by William Kerrigan, John Rumrich, and Stephen M. Fallon Derived from the Modern Library’s esteemed The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton, this new volume, extensively revised and updated by its editors, contains Milton’s two late masterpieces, the brief epic Paradise Regained and the tragic drama Samson Agonistes. Age after age, these works have inspired new controversy and exciting interpretive debates. With expert commentary to guide the reader through historical contexts and verbal details, as well as the larger political and philosophical implications, the concerns of these canonical pieces live once again for today’s audiences. The volume also contains Milton’s complete shorter poems, which include such major achievements as “Lycidas,” “A Masque Presented at Ludlow Castle, 1634,” “L’Allegro,” and “Il Penseroso,” and the author’s twenty-four influential sonnets. Thoughtfully edited and carefully designed, this is an essential publication of Milton’s classic poetry. Praise for The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton “For generations of readers Milton has been the measure of both eloquence and nobility of mind. For the next generation, this new Modern Library volume will be the standard. It brings Milton, as a poet and a thinker, vividly alive before us.”—Robert Hass, former Poet Laureate of the United States “A superb edition of the great poet, with modernized spelling, lucid introductions to each work, illuminating footnotes, and fresh prose translations in Latin, Greek, and Italian. This will surely be the edition of choice for teachers, students, and general readers too.”—Leo Damrosch, Harvard University

Book Hector s Juice

Download or read book Hector s Juice written by Peter White and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2011-01-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a great American novel. However, the story of Hector's Juice starts long before America was a country. In fact it starts long before any history was written about anything. It starts at the very beginning of time and fast forwards to evolution and the beginnings of mankind. But evolution also has a spiritual side and that's where Spencer the very first guardian angel comes in. He will take you from the beginnings of man in the Great Rift Valley of Africa to the lime colored gas chamber of San Quentin State Penitentiary in California. From the beginnings of surfing (not in Hawaii) to the gunfight at the OK Corral this is a great American novel that is neither restricted to time or space.

Book Reimagining Hagar

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nyasha Junior
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-05-28
  • ISBN : 0191062502
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Reimagining Hagar written by Nyasha Junior and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagining Hagar illustrates that while interpretations of Hagar as Black are not frequent within the entire history of her interpretation, such interpretations are part of strategies to emphasize elements of Hagar's story in order to associate or disassociate her from particular groups. It considers how interpreters engage markers of difference, including gender, ethnicity, status and their intersections in their portrayals of Hagar. Nyasha Junior offers a reception history that examines interpretations of Hagar with a focus on interpretations of Hagar as a Black woman. Reception history within biblical studies considers the use, impact, and influence of biblical texts and looks at a necessarily small number of points within the long history of the transmission of biblical texts. This volume covers a limited selection of interpretations over time that is not intended to be a representative sample of interpretations of Hagar. It is beyond the scope of this book to offer a comprehensive collection of interpretations of Hagar throughout the history of biblical interpretation or in popular culture. Junior argues for the African presence in biblical texts; identifies and responds to White supremacist interpretations; offers cultural-historical interpretation that attends to the history of biblical interpretation within Black communities; and provides ideological criticism that uses the African-American context as a reading strategy. Reimagining Hagar offers a history of interpretation, but also expands beyond interpretation among Black communities to consider how various interpreters have identified Hagar as Black.

Book excerpt: Crooked land developer Charles Tucker loathed Santa Cecilia County. After the county government prosecuted him for fraud, he swore vengeance. At his death, he left his fortune in a trust and required that every cent be spent in Santa Cecilia. He suspected that his wealth would cause misery, envy, loathing, and avarice. He was right. The spectacular trust fund creates a feeding frenzy among covetous contenders, from committed altruists to adept con artists. Expensive lawyers and their eager clients vie to garner the trust funds for their programs, from a woman's center to a junk science scam. The intense turmoil opens the door on an inside view of big buck philanthropy and the human needs biz. Trustees, lawyers, claimants, and the hopeful recipients are swept up in an Olympian struggle for charitable funds, just as Tucker gleefully intended. The Golden Calf is a delicious mix of cynicism, politics, and compassion as it plumbs the best and worst of human nature in the pursuit of charitable funds.
