Book Same sex Marriage and Religious Liberty

Download or read book Same sex Marriage and Religious Liberty written by Douglas Laycock and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Same-Sex Marriage and Religious Liberty explores the religious freedom implications of defining marriage to include same-sex couples. It represents the only comprehensive, scholarly appraisal to date of the church-state conflicts virtually certain to arise from the legal recognition of same-sex marriage. It explores two principal questions. First, exactly what kind of religious freedom conflicts are likely to emerge if society embraces same-sex marriage? A redefinition of marriage would impact a host of laws where marital status affects legal rights--in housing, employment, health-care, education, public accommodations, and property, in addition to family law. These laws, in turn, regulate a host of religious institutions--schools, hospitals, and social service providers, to name a few--that often embrace a different definition of marriage. As a result, church-state conflicts will follow. This volume anticipates where and how these manifold disputes will arise. Second, how might these conflicts be resolved? If the disputes spark litigation under the Free Speech, Free Exercise, or Establishment Clauses of the First Amendment, who will prevail and why? When, if ever, should claims of religious liberty prevail over claims of sexual liberty? Drawing on experience in analogous areas of law, the volume explores whether it is possible to avoid these constitutional conflicts by statutory accommodation, or by separating religious marriage from civil marriage.

Download or read book The Fight for Marriage written by Phillip F. Cramer and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For leaders in governments and in churches, marriage equality is the most contentious civil-rights dispute in the 21st century. During an era where nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, same-gender couples now have the federal civil right to marry, too. At a time when 62 percent of Americans approve of same-gender marriage, according to June 2017 Pew Research, churches are having to come to terms with whether to recognize and affirm these faithful partnerships as sacred covenants. Attorneys Harbison and Cramer, faithful and active members of a United Methodist congregation, brought one of the cases to the US Supreme Court, which resulted in the 2015 landmark decision that permits persons of the same gender to marry. They bring a unique legal and cultural perspective to the controversy. For the three couples Harbison and Cramer represented, marriage is not an "issue" to be resolved. Marriage is rather a sign for these couples of their faithful promise to love each other until they depart this life. "Each couple married for several reasons, including their commitment to love and support one another, to demonstrate their mutual commitment to their family, friends, and colleagues, and to show others that they should be treated as a family. They also married to make a legally binding mutual commitment, to join their resources together in a legal unit, and to be treated by others as a legal family unit, rather than as legally unrelated individuals. Finally, each couple married so that they could access the legal responsibilities of marriage to protect themselves and their families, just as heterosexual couples do." Aleta A. Trauger, Federal Judge With a first-hand account of the respectful courtroom drama concerning marriage in American communities and states, Harbison and Cramer show why states care about marriage, why the church got involved in marriage more than a thousand years after Jesus's earthly ministry, and how the church and the state function in partnership to foster the purposes and social benefits of marriage. From the Faultlines collection, resources intended to inform conversations around human sexuality and the church.

Book The Truth About Same Sex Marriage

Download or read book The Truth About Same Sex Marriage written by Erwin W. Lutzer and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HEADLINE: Is it really that big of a deal? A May 2009 Gallup poll revealed that fifty-seven percent of Americans oppose same-sex marriage, while only forty percent are in favor of it (down from forty-six percent in 2007). This short, easy-to-read book helps shed light on what so many people believe, and why they ought not be at a loss about what to do now. The headlines only tell part of the story. In this revised and updated version of his bestselling book, Dr. Erwin Lutzer clearly and accurately depicts the truth about what is at stake here. By asking the right questions and by pinpointing the very real ramifications of same-sex marriage this handbook will help guide reality back to Truth. Dr. Lutzer expertly answers the questions that so many individuals, parents, friends, and families are asking: -How did we get to this point? -Why is marriage, as God intended it, better—and healthier? -How can I talk to my kids about this? -How do I responsibly read, watch, and filter the news? -Is there still hope? Let no one say that we have to choose between loving homosexuals and opposing same-sex marriages. Biblically, love is defined not as license to legitimatize sinful behavior of any kind, but love helps us see that there is a better way. Obviously, we must be as concerned about our own sins as we are about the sins of the homosexual community. We must be concerned enough to speak out about any action, heterosexual or homosexual, that violates God’s intended plan for marriage and the family. This simple, straightforward look at the issue of same-sex marriage will equip you to know what is really happening and, most importantly, why it matters for you.

Book excerpt: In Made for Love, Fr. Michael Schmitz presents the Catholic teaching on same-sex attraction and same-sex "sexual" relations. He begins by giving background information regarding the different worldviews of the human person, the philosophical ideas of nature and purpose, the differences between objective and subjective truth, the principal of non- contradiction, and the fallen human nature that resulted from Original Sin. He then discusses in great detail the nature and ends of human sexuality and the nature of true love, while, in a compassionate and non-judgmental way, explaining the flawed nature of same-sex "sexual" relations. While this book is intended primarily for those who have same-sex attraction and their family and friends, its presentation of the compassionate truth of Catholic teaching on same-sex attraction will be of great benefit to everyone in today's society.

Book Same Sex Marriage and Church Law A liberal evangelical call for greater inclusivity within Christianity according to scripture

Download or read book Same Sex Marriage and Church Law A liberal evangelical call for greater inclusivity within Christianity according to scripture written by Kevin Mahoney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, layperson Kevin Mahoney argues that Christian churches should embrace same sex marriage. Although many conservative Christians reject homosexuality due to the laws of Moses, Kevin points out that very few (if any) of these three-thousand-year-old Mosaic laws are upheld today, and that homophobia is contrary to the spirit and manner of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus himself never condemned homosexuality; however, He did illuminate the hypocrisy of the Pharisees. Kevin argues that the Pharisees are very much alive today in the form of conservative Christians that proscribe homosexuality. Since most of the laws against homosexuality around the world have a religious basis, then this book's demolition of the conservative Christian argument against homosexuality will also be instructive for non-religious LGBT rights campaigners. Using the Parable of the Prodigal Son as an analogy, Kevin outlines how liberal and conservative Christians can finally agree on the divisive issue of same sex marriage.

Book When a Nation Forgets God

Download or read book When a Nation Forgets God written by Erwin W. Lutzer and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent book is so important. It clearly and powerfully explains what the parallels are between Germany's fall from grace and the beginning of our own fall. - Eric Metaxas, author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy In When A Nation Forgets God, Erwin Lutzer studies seven similarities between Nazi Germany and America today—some of them chilling—and cautions us to respond accordingly. Engaging, well-researched, and easy to understand, Lutzer’s writing is that of a realist, one alarmed but unafraid. Amidst describing the messes of our nation’s government, economy, legal pitfalls, propaganda, and more, Lutzer points to the God who always has a plan. At the beginning of the twentieth Century, Nazi Germany didn’t look like a country on the brink of world-shaking terrors. It looked like America today. When a Nation Forgets God uses history to warn us of a future that none of us wants to see. It urges us to be ordinary heroes who speak up and take action.

Book Same Sex Marriage

Download or read book Same Sex Marriage written by Scott A. Merriman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable survey of a cutting-edge issue, this book outlines the history of same-sex marriage, explaining how politics and religion have intersected to decide and control who can legally marry. Marriage equality became law in the United States in 2015 with the Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. Marriage is, strictly speaking, a secular ceremony, requiring only civil sanction. However, many couples also seek the blessing of a religious body upon their union, and not all religious bodies support marriage equality. Some oppose it outright and some support it outright, while others are divided. This work examines the issue of same-sex marriage in the U.S. and internationally. It surveys the attitudes of major religions towards same-sex marriage and also looks at leading and sometimes polarizing personalities, like politician Pete Buttigieg and Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, who exemplify both the religious and political sides of the issue. The book's A–Z organization makes it easy for readers to locate important court cases, individuals, religious bodies, and social movements at the center of the same-sex marriage debate.
