Download or read book Interpreter Sam Carries On written by Donald A. Herron and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreter Sam Carries On (SEG Geophysical Monograph Series No. 20) is a collection of the seventh through the fourteenth years of “Interpreter Sam” columns from The Leading Edge. It “carries on” with the stories of the fictitious Interpreter Sam, the sometimes hero, sometimes victim, and most often innocent bystander in circumstances typical of a seismic interpreter’s career in the oil and gas industry. As in the first Interpreter Sam volume, SEG Geophysical Monograph Series No. 15, each chapter of the book begins with a caricature of Sam (and others) created by the artist David Carman. In the epilogue, Sam presents three verses, based on the works of three well-known poets but adapted to the modern interpretation environment. This book extends the storytelling tradition of its predecessor; paraphrasing the noted paleontologist and historian of nature Stephen Jay Gould, it retells actual events as stories with the intent to interest and to instruct, and as such is appropriate for readers of all persuasions.

Download or read book Priestess In A Desert Night written by Paul Rizzo and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-04-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Priestess in a Desert Night is a drama that begins on a desert night, when Sam and Justin pull into a roadside tavern In El Paso, Texas. Sam decides to go for a walk in the immediate surroundings of the tavern. The moonlight gives Sam enough light to stroll about and eye the desert floor and its dwellers. Justin, Sam's buddy, heads into the tavern to get a table. The foreshadowing is on display as Sam eyes a desert owl large in stature. The owl waits for its evening prey to slither along. The owl eventually is attacked by hawks, and Sam encounters the owl's demise. The owl's final resting place is, in part, a foreshadowing of a present danger. The desert is the soul and stage of this story. The priestess is an old story of a Navajo woman, presented to Sam by Becky, a lady he meets by chance in the tavern. The story of the Navajo priestess runs concurrently with this drama. The tale of the Navajo priestess is the crux or bridge of this story. The priestess of days gone by has fatalistic importance to this novel. She, the early priestess, was captured by Spanish soldiers; and she, White Sun, escaped and returned to her tribe. The elders had dismissed her. She had to go into the desert for days, and if she survived, she could rejoin her people. What happens to White Sun in her trial has bearing hundreds of years later to the fate of Sam and Becky and an American hero, Virginia, a Navajo descendant, who is instrumental in this drama concerning Sam, Becky, Justin, Connie, and Uncle Jack--ordinary Americans fighting to keep their farms.

Download or read book Slade s Glacier written by Robert F. Jones and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slade’s Glacier is a tale of discovery and destruction, betrayal and revenge, set in the rugged “Great Land” of Alaska. Jack Slade and Sam Healey, flying partners during World War II, establish a bush pilot business in Alaska after the war. When their C-47 Dakota is forced down on a glacier by a wolverine in the cargo deck that breaks out of its cage, they discover a valley that offers the realization each man's dreams. To Jack Slade, it’s the ideal place to homestead, raise a family, and live simply as a professional hunting and fishing guide; to Healey, the pool of crude oil he locates under the glacial ice promises the wealth he always wanted. In scenes that range from Alaska’s coastal fishing ports to the high, fierce wastelands of the interior, we watch each man lay the plans for their individual goals—and ultimately come into fatal conflict. Along the way, they meet a wide, colorful variety of Alaskan types, including Charlie Blue, a Tlingit Indian, shaman, and seer; Norman Ormandy, the tough saloonkeeper of Gurry Bay; and Malec Mummad-Afi, a wealthy exiled Iranian oil king and sheep hunter.
